I had no idea my kids would have as much fun with this as they have! I bought it so they could practice identifying money (my 5 year old) counting money (my 7 year old) and making chance (my 11 year old) but they have SO much fun playing with the money and playing store--the mark up they try and put on their used toys when they "sell" them to each other is absorbent! ;) This was a great buy. I love things that are fun AND educational without quickly becoming boring.

As always, Melissa & Doug deliver a great product! And as always, Melissa & Doug need to figure out a way to slide some type of cover on their very nice boxes, so that kids can keep their stuff in the very nice box! Why they don't see this problem is beyond me. I mean, just stuff the money in a Ziplock bag & send it to me because that's where it will have to be stored anyway after it's opened! And sadly, the nice box will just get thrown away bc what can you really do with it without a cover!? The same problem goes for many of their items. The magnetic dolls & clothes are just 1 that comes to mind.

We love this money kit. I didn't read the sizing and it is bigger than I thought. It is the same size as actual money so the holder doesn't fit in her desk the way I planned, but it does make learning much easier. My daughter was having a bit of trouble distinguishing coins for her school assignments and a few hours playing with this and she has it down. I rarely carry cash and while she knows how my debit card works (balancing the check book and everything) she just hasn't been as exposed to paper money and coins as often, so this is a great tool for learning.

Great money set for teaching counting change or any other type of money math.. Before this, I had purchased a cheap plastic money set at a Dollar Store, (don't get me wrong, it got me by), but all the coins looked the same, and it was difficult discerning the difference between a nickel, a quarter, etc. when they all looked the same ! When I saw this on Amazon, I knew I had to buy it because I school my son at home, and we are right in the middle of "money," and my boys like to play store while they are learning how to count back change..I wanted them to have something very life-like, sturdy, and that had enough bills/coins to make change when teaching. I am greatly satisfied with this set.. The wooden box that it comes with is nice and strong, not flimsy or weak.. There are more than enough coins and bills provided. And I was very happy to see that they included $50 dollar bills, along with 50 cent pieces. Whatever reason for purchasing this, you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED !!! Melissa & Doug did a great job giving a realistic money set!!! Thanks guys!!!

When I purchase toys for the children, I always open it up and "play" with it before I give it to the children. First I want to see if it is safe and then was it worth the money I spent. This Play Money Set passed all my tests. The size of the monies was very close to the real thing. There was plenty of monies in the storage unit to be effective for the children's play. They could do something with it that is, play "real" store or bank or just use to learn how to make change and count money. The coins are plastic and easy to handle. The children loved it and have gotten many hours of fun out of it without knowing they actually have learned something.

This set is so nice and realistic. My daughter is going to first grade but I've been teaching her how to count money since pre-school and this makes it so much better because it looks just like real bills and coins without having to use real money and she can keep it organized. She started playing with it as soon as I took it out of the box.

WOW - that about sums it up. I have always loved Melissa & Doug products and this is another product they have gone over the top. The money is very realistic - all of the bills are the same size as real bills as are the coins. As others have mentioned, I also like that the pennies are a copper color as opposed the the same gray plastic color of the other coins. The paper the bills are made of, I feel is sturdy. It feels like multi-purpose copy paper and should last quite a while. Keep in mind, it is still paper, so it may rip if you are rough with it. I also like the quality of the coins. They are not a thin plastic. They are a heavier plastic, that when dropped on the counter, floor etc they sound similar to real coins dropping. The money comes in a wooden case with markings on the bottom (underneath the bills & coins) as to where each denomination goes. Also has a clear, plexiglass cover that slides back over the money - major bonus in clean up and storage. There are plenty of bills and coins of each denomination to have a great time playing. We also use this money with our 8 yr old daughter for her allowance, b-day money etc. We trade out the real money for the play money and she keeps the play money in her purse. When we go shopping and she want to buy anything, we trade the play money for real. This teaches her responsibility while giving us peace of mind that she has not lost real money in her room.:)

I would give this 4.5 stars because it does not have a lid to stop the money from coming out-but if you saw how excited my 11-year-old daughter was over this. She is the real money to play with all her dolls-so she want to take money and she's wanted it for a long time so I waited a probably too long. But everybody thought it was a really cool gift and she was so excited and it's very realistic. Like I said, the only problem is that it has no cover on top of it so it is wood almost like an open cash drawer.

I bought these for my kids' piggy banks. I am a credit card person and do not have many coins hanging around. So instead of real coins I give them these coins as a reward or something and they put these into their piggy banks. Then when we open the bank, I purchase them with their actual values so that it is a convenient replacement of real coins. They are not heavy or dirty as the real ones which are also pluses. The only problem is that the biggest coin does not fit into the piggy bank's top hole. But it may possibly be due proper representation of the actual thing so I can not blame the company for that. So far kids like it and I do too...

I teetered for a long time about getting this, because it didn't appear to have a lid and that aspect equated to MESS for me...but there is a clear lid that slides on when not in use. (many of the M&D products I have purchased don't have a lid once they are opened) I liked this money product because it went up to the larger sums of money and we use it as a teaching tool more so then a play toy. I think LAKESHORE LEARNING's pretend money looks more 'real' but these are close enough for our teaching purposes. I ended up blending the two in the M&D box. Most cash registers don't have enough space for the larger bills. SO that is one aspect of this box I like. There is a place for each type of money, rather then stuffing the 10's and 20's together. Under the money there are 'marks' to indicate what money goes in what slot, which is great for clean up purposes, yet if you want to use the box for some other sorting purpose, that might be an issue? I rate this a 5 star because it is a great value, good quality and serves it's purpose well. :)
