Great Radio
This is a great little radio. I use it in an automobile with a midland magnetic mount external antenna. You have to be sure and tune the antenna. This will require a SWR meter and a short coax cable. Amazon sells all the stuff you need. You can google how to do it. Before I tuned my antenna, I wasn't getting very good performance, but after tuning it, I can sometimes get a range of 20 miles. Usually it's in the 10 to 15 mile range. The radio also comes with a battery pack and a flip antenna so you can use it as a handheld. Very versatile radio with a lot of equipment standard. I've been commuting long distances to work for years and have heard hundreds of books on tape and then CD. I know all the songs on the radio. I got this for entertainment, but it is useful as well. Several times I was warned of traffic conditions that let me take and alternate route and not get stuck in traffic. I've had the unit about for several months now and it has worked flawlessly.

Great Little Radio!
I read a lot of reviews and watched a few YouTube videos about this radio before purchasing one. I took both the good and bad with a grain of salt. I didn't expect the GREATEST CB RADIO EVER but I wasn't wanting a piece of junk either. I can say I am more than happy with this little CB. Using the rechargeable battery pack and the rubber ducky antenna, I can get a mile or two for range on a good day. Using the magnetic antenna I mounted on my truck and the power adapter for the cig lighter, I can get a good 4 or 5 miles. Truckers come in clear and they all say I'm broadcasting clearly as well. I do have to turn the squelch knob up a ways in town but I can turn it back down quite a bit on the interstate. The build quality seems sturdy and I have had no issues with the power adapter staying plugged in which is contrary to some reviews. More than happy with this purchase!

Great radio...rechargeable battery pack issues solved.
I bought this radio for use on an upcoming road trip and will be continuing to test it over the next few days. Here are my initial findings. Good quality, versatile and works with 6 single use AA batteries and on 12 volt power point in my truck. Handheld antenna is limited as expected but good for short line of sight communication and weather. Obviously not for use indoors or in a vehicle. I will be testing this unit with a magnetic mobile antenna this week and report findings. ATTENTION: There is an issue with the rechargeable battery pack and some brands of batteries. I ordered Amazon Basics and they did not work even though they were charged. The battery charger also did not work, so I had to charge the batteries in a separate charger. Midland was kind enough to send me a replacement; however it too did not work. I spoke with Cheryl in Midland customer service and she advised that they are aware of the issue and are working hard to solve it, but they have discovered that 8 nimh AA Energizer brand batteries appear to always work. We had a good laugh, but I agreed to give them a try, and she is correct...battery pack and charger work just fine. She asked me to report my findings to her, which I will certainly do. In the meantime, I discovered the problem with other brands of batteries and have a fix. Here is what I did: 1. Open the rechargeable battery pack and set aside the half with the circuit board in it. 2. Orient the other half with the small silver contact square at bottom right. 3. Locate the raised divider rib between the top and second from top battery cradles. Follow it to the right where it turns upward (see "before" photo). 4. Note that the portion extending upward is between the the battery stops (lower stop for first battery and upper stop for second battery). 5. The portion of the vertical rib needs to be trimmed to be flush or nearly flush with the battery stops. I used an x-acto knife to trim it. 6. We are talking about less then a millimeter to trim. (See the "after" photo.) 7. I did this for each end of each rib. This allowed the Amazon battery (which is just a bit larger in diameter than the Energizer) to seat against the battery stop and not the raised rib section, which was preventing the positive terminal of the battery from touching the battery pack contact. After inserting the other 3 batteries, I tested the voltage between the small square silver contact at bottom right of of the case (+) and the (-) contact at top right of shell. My reading was 5.74 volts. I then reassembled the battery pack, installed it on the radio and it now works perfectly. I will report this manufacturing flaw to Midland in hopes the supplier can correct the issue.

Good for emergencies and weather
I use this mainly for weather while traveling and it's great for that. Usually can pull in the local NOAA station and 2 or 3 others so I usually have an excellent idea of what to expect weather wise. Gets great weather reception inside the vehicle with just the rubber ducks. CB is only usable outside the vehicle with the rubber ducky and then just line of sight. If you can't see 'em, you can't hear or talk to 'em. A magnetic mount antenna is MANDATORY for any real mobile use. The car power connector has the antenna connection. Don't even try the BNC adapter as it won't work with the car power. There's an internal connection that disconnects the units BNC connection. When using the car power you must connect an external antenna to it (there is a workaround but it's not worth the effort). Range with the external antenna is still limited (to about double the rubber duck) unless it's a REALLY big one. Still great for emergencies and to put away out of sight.

Super Happy with this radio!
If this radio was stolen in would instantly buy another one. This unit has the best of both worlds! The CB comes with 2 battery packs, one of which is setup for rechargeable batteries. It also has the mobile adaptor which allows for the unit to be wired into the car for full power and antenna capability. The battery life is really good. I can go all day and have plenty of power to keep going. I have a Firestick on the back of the Jeep and this really helps out when surrounded by hills. The handheld is great if you want to step out of the vehicle and still be able to stay connected. Swapping back and forth between the mobile adaptor and the battery pack takes all of 2 seconds. It is simple to swap back and forth multiple times a day. (Especially if someone in your off road group continually gets stuck) The additional weather band has been convenient to have on a few occasions. I have not had any issues whatsoever with range with the short antenna. The longest distance I have tested was about a 1/4 mile on an expressway, but the reception was clear as day. I only use the CB when I am with a group and we typically stay within close proximity of each other. The Firestick drastically changes/increases the range, of course..... So if you are like me and use your radio for recreational use and want it permanently mounted in your car, then this is absolutely the PERFECT radio for you! Buy a Firestick with the quick disconnect and you can basically have the entire setup up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Great option for short range communication
I've had this for about two years now, and I don't regret purchasing this instead of a dash mounted unit at all. I love that I don't have a huge CB whip telling all the methheads that there's pawnable stuff in my truck, I love that it doesn't take up valuable dashboard realestate, I love that I can take it from vehicle to vehicle or loan it to a friend or even slap the battery pack on and walk around with it... all of those features have been handy. Transmission and reception with the included rubber ducky antenna is horrible, and probably the source of most of the negative reviews this CB gets - do not plan on transmitting or receiving at anything remotely like a usable range with the stock antenna from inside a vehicle. It just won't happen. I have paired mine with a Little Wil magnetic mount antenna and it's been great for road trip and trail comm. Larger and higher powered CB units are a waste of money - if you really want to reach out and touch someone, get your amateur license. If you just need to chat with the other vehicles you're travelling with, use this.

Great CB Radio for the Non-Trucker
Before I purchased this hand-held radio, I read all the negative reviews about it. Most of them simply claimed that there was no reception, and the Hand-Held was just a toy. I watched one YouTube video where a woman unboxed her radio in her car while her husband was driving the car down the road. She verified the contents of the box and put together the radio, with the little whip antenna, while still in the front seat of her car moving down the road. She listened to the radio for several minutes without hearing anything, then pressed the transmit button and called out for a radio check. Silence. After another 5 minutes of this, she concluded that the radio didn't work and shut it off, claiming that she was going to repack and return the radio. She was trying to transmit a signal from inside a closed car. There is apparently a great misunderstandings of how radios work, and how important the antenna system is to a radio. When I got my Midland 75-822, I also bought the recommended Midland-18-2442 Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna. The two work perfectly together, and when properly located and connected, this hand-held radio sends and receives clear signals within a 5-mile distance. It is easy to use, very clear, and perfect for a car driver crossing the country on the interstates. Just remember that there are times when no one around you is transmitting on your channel. At $100, it is the best value on the market.

Handheld powerhouse.
This radio is fantastic. I got this unit as a backup to my base unit mounted in my truck, but now find myself using this little guy more. With all of its features like dual channel monioring and a scan with adjustable sensitivity, this radio truly is my new favorite. This unit comes with two battery packs and a car base. One battery pack works perfect with a set of rechargeable batteries (battery pack has the capability to be charged without removing batteries) and the smaller battery pack works great with standard cells as a backup. Would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a portable CB unit that can keep right up with base units.

This CB and thru Glass antenna can go in any car / truck with ease.
Got this mostly to just monitor the traffic on interstate. Installed it in my new SUV and didn't want to drill holes or cut things. So this and a thru the glass antenna, the whole install looks great. This combination gets me just over a mile of RX/TX, quite pleased.

Great little CB radio, used either way...handset or walkie talkie
I bought this because of the duality of it's nature. It can be used as a walkie talkie, with either 6 regular AA batteries or 8 rechargeable batteries which can be charged while in the radio!! Or you can plug it into your vehicle power point and use it with .... just about any kind of cb antenna you may choose. Just make sure you check the SWR or have someone do it for you if can't do it yourself!! Good sound quality, both as a CB and as a weather radio. AND, when I got it, from the 'used' department at Amazon (bad idea), it was a couple of weeks before I was able to try the 'rechargeable base' to see if it worked. Everything else did, but this item did not. Having hassled with Amazon's chat function a couple times, I wasn't in the mood to deal with them again, so, a quick email to Midland got me a replacement rechargeable battery box that DID work, no charge, no hassle, 3 days in the mail and I'm VERY impressed with Midlands customer service. THANKS VERONICA!!!
