Engineering masterpiece
I've been using this exact can opener for about 10 years. I finally ordered a new one and put the old one out in my Westy. The original still works perfectly and once you learn how to use it you will never go back that stone aged finger slicer you've been using your whole life. You will only ever have two issues with this opener: Issue 1: The very first time you use it. You will scratch your head, swear a few times and have a dumb look on your face because it defies everything you've learned about can opener placement. Issue 2: Every person that comes to your house and tells you that your can opener is stupid and broken. If you can live with those two things then be prepared for a lifetime of hassle free can opening with the added joy of re-using the lid to seal up the rest of your uncooked baked beans from Costco. This opener is the best, period. To use (for you first timers), simply open the handles and place the can opener right over top of the can (as if the top of the can were under the default Amazon image). Move the can opener toward the can until it stops, then clamp the handle. The opener will grab ahold of the can and will not let it go. You can salsa dance and it's not coming off. Then, easily twist the handle all the way around. You will feel it get slightly easier which means you're done. Then take off the opener and pinch the edge of the lid with the little claw things coming off the side. Pull it right off and you're done. That lid can now easily go back on the can for re-sealing your extras. You're welcome.

My all time favorite can opener!
The Oxo can opener is the easiest can opener to use, that actually works flawlessly! Makes opening canned goods a quick, clean and simple process that has lasted like a champ through daily use and easy cleaning! Even better than automatic can openers if you ask me. Easier to clean for sure, easier to get the can attached and without all the sharp edges! A+ purchase with simple on time delivery.

Great example of engineering that Works & makes sense!
Really impressed with this can opener! It does everything it says and more. There is little to nothing sticking to the underside of the lid because you're aren't sloshing anything around and the lid stays flat throughout the cutting process. I have noticed that you need to pay attention when the resistance decreases, to stop right then, not to continue any further or it makes removing the lid a bit harder. Because of this, I would've given 4 1/2 stars if I could've. A tip to make removing the lid easier, lift the can opener off the lid/can, rotate the can about 90 degrees in either direction and then remove the lid. It appears if you move away from the end point of the cut, the lid is easier to remove. This will be around for a long time. Thanks OXO!

Oh my goodness, this thing is AMAZING!
So I'm definitely not one to get excited about kitchen gadgets, but now that I'm trying to cook more I need to use the can opener often. We used to have an electric one which I LOVED, but when we moved into a small Craftsman bungalow with almost no counter space in the kitchen I got rid of it. Going back to the old can opener was miserable and I could barely use it myself, often just getting my husband to do it for me. So I finally broke down and decided I need to get a new one instead of waiting for hubby to get home just to open a can for me. I have really enjoyed OXO products I have ordered in the past and this looked like a great little piece of machinery. I watched the video and was amazed at how easy it looked. I ordered, but didn't want to get my hopes up while waiting for it to arrive. I was used to the can skittering around on the counter top and making a mess all the while, especially when I removed the lid which usually ended up in the can. So when this arrived I at least wanted it to be better than my old one, but I didn't want to hold my breath. I took out a can and tried to attach the OXO can opener, but it took me a second being used to my old one on which the handles went a different direction. So then I got it on right, very simply in fact (I guess I was trying to hard, lol). Then I attempt my first turn, awaiting the pain and struggle that I've come to associate with opening a can. It went so smoothly I began shaking my head assuming it must not be working, it didn't look like it was working. So I got all the way around and again being used to the lid plunking into the can, but this not happening with the OXO, I decided it must not have worked. I knew it was too good to be true, then I picked up the can, and under a squeeze of my hand the lid popped open. I was dumbfounded that I had just opened a can without breaking a sweat and with absolutely no pain in my fingers/hands/wrists/joints/etc., not to mention absolutely NO MESS!!! If there is one piece I will take with me wherever I move and will always be on my MUST HAVE list, this is it! I've never opened a can easier, even when I had the electric can opener. This OXO is so easy you too will probably wonder if it's working or if you're doing it right. When the lid comes up you will be amazed that there are no sharp edges and in most cases you can set the lid back down over the can to save the leftovers. I did notice however it depends on the size/sturdiness of the can. I had a harder time with smaller flimsier cans as the lid tends to shift, plus it works best if you set the lid back down exactly as you took it off which is relatively impossible. In almost every case though I could set the lid on, and while it didn't seal I was confident that the food would be fresh and not dried out when I next needed it from the fridge (I'd definitely use it within the week just to be safe). I also love the little pliers so I don't have to attempt to get it off with my fingers. Just one gentle tug and it pops right off, again with no mess. If you're looking for a reliable and easy to use can opener then most definitely give this one a try. Now I don't have to wait for hubby to get home to cook, and I don't have to deal with pain from struggling with a difficult opener. This is so easy I'm using it at least twice as much as our old one, I wish I had got one sooner!

SAVE your HAND! This is the ONE!!
PLEASE NOTICE--I bought this exact one when we first saw it--year 2010-?. This can opener is the easiest on my poor old hands--bar none! Yes, I bought the "$$$100. electric stand-alone" and others--but this is best I could find. I used it regularly until last month (Dec. 2015), when I felt it "shipped a spot" when opening cans. I went directly "ON-LINE" to locate this one, for fear I'd get stuck without a can opener! I was relieved to find this OXO, and ordered/delivered in 3-4 days. NOTES: 1) I don't use cans daily; I live alone, and am maybe not a "HEAVY-user" of a can opener. 2) The old one was in such fine condition that it was almost confusing which to discard--between the new and the old one! Of course I kept it clean and polished--but it didn't scratch or lose its shine!

smooth operator (once you figure out how to hold it)
This is very easy to work once you figure out how to hold it. (There are pics how to use it and I watched the video but didn't "get" that it was being held differently.) The impulse for me was to try to hold it sideways like any other opener and that is not how this works. The front end should be pointed to the middle of the can. It actually showed me how to use itself, when I kept trying to use it sideways and got a grip on the can, started turning the knob and it slowly turned itself until the front end was pointed to the middle of the can I was opening. It was the "ah ha!" moment. Very easy to use, feels great in my aging hands, having fun using it. I don't eat much canned food except albacore tuna on salads and black olives, beans and tomato sauce for chili. So I've had two tuna salads this week just to use the opener. Very smooth edges when done cutting. The built in lifter tool is easy to use, there is no tugging and fighting with anything. So happy to have found this. Don't know why I didn't know about them before. I always hated how standard manual can openers eventually got some rust on them due to the contents of the can getting all over the cutting tool and having to wash it often. The can contents do not touch the cutting parts on this opener (which is why I decided to try it). Love this.

Best can opener ever made
We love this can opener, it's the best can opener ever made. We have a large household which means a lot of cooking. It's not 1 can of corn here, it's 3 cans of corn. Our can opener gets a real work out. The standard opener only lasts us 1 month at best and that's ones with a 3-5 year warranty. I even purchased one with I lifetime warranty once and it lasted 6 weeks in our house. This can opener lasted 3 years! I just came to purchase a new one as Amazon seems to be the only place to carry this style anymore. The company came out with a new style with a knob on top, it works good too BUT, I have arthritis and it's really hard for me to use the newer style. This one is like a gift from the heavens above.

This advice was tucked away on the packaging and isn't mentioned in the Use & Care booklet so easy to miss
I have only opened a few cans so far but it has performed perfectly on them. A couple of quick things to note. 1. You are only supposed to hand wash these not put them in the dishwasher. This advice was tucked away on the packaging and isn't mentioned in the Use & Care booklet so easy to miss. 2. If like me you come to these from more conventional can openers then you may expect the lid to lift off while still in the grip of the can opener once you have cut once around the edge. However these openers seem to lock onto both the can and the lid so even after the lid has been separated it may seem like it has not. The trick is to follow the instructions exactly, i.e. after turning knob clockwise until resistance drops, turn knob counter clockwise once, THEN OPEN HANDLES. That results in the lid AND the can being released. At which point you can use the jaws on the side of the opener to grab the lid. Not doing this may be why some users perceive that the lid has not been cut from the can, which was my initial perception too. Just to add that the turned over edge on the can is very smooth. I wouldn't recommend making a habit of running your finger around the edge but I did so carefully and was very impressed with how much safer this is than the raw edge usually left by can openers with no burrs or other sharp edges. Time and use will tell regarding reliability but so far very happy.

We've depended on this for years; still the best.
We've been using this for many years, and we open a LOT of cans. Finally wore the first one out and got a new one; same good quality. Takes a little effort to crank, but it's ergonomic, and the "gripper" will pull off the lid easily without you touching any part of the lid, or even changing your grip on the opener. With the external cutter, nothing gets dirty, either. You pull it out of the drawer, zing off the top of the can, grab it with the "gripper' thing, release the lid into the sink for rinsing, then toss the can opener back into the drawer. No more black gook around the cutter of a normal can opener, no more prying the lid out of the food and hoping you cleaned the top of the can well enough, no more grabbing the sharp lid and getting the contents on your hands, no more sharp pointy lids to rinse off and put in your recycling, and no more sharp spur sticking out on the inside of the can after you open it.

Other can openers are wrong
This is hands down the best can opener I've ever used. A few years ago, I went to Target and snagged the previous design of this can opener for my mom for mother's day because she had an old, clunky can opener whose days were numbered and just made opening cans miserable. This gadget not only makes opening cans a joke, but does it so well I -brag- about my can opener. Who does that? Per the description, this does leave smooth edges on the open can so you are much less likely to injure yourself. You can choose to not finish the cut and just bend the lid open as well (this is my preference). My only dislike with this design is that it's a little awkward to detach from the can once you've finished the loop to open the can. This is really nitpicky so I wouldn't pay much mind to it. It just would have been nice to have a little thumb hook or something so you could remove the can opener one-handed.
