Just fabulous. My wife has been wanting a serger since forever. The price can't be beat, and it works a charm, does everything the expensive ones do. It's a bit noisy, but they all seem to be with all those moving bits. She is busy zinging out all kinds of things, loving it. It seems almost bullet- and idiot-proof. I was more than a little afraid of threading it, but it turns out to be not that hard. The lower looper is kind of a take-it-on-faith deal, but it does work just fine (there's an auto-thread dingus to get the innermost thingamabob). I got a Dritz needle threader for the two needles, but they can be done just fine with the included forceps. So on balance it's no worse to thread than her "regular" machine, there're just three extra threads. I totally love it, too. I can make a really nice pillowcase in 10 minutes (easy project).

I absolutely love my new serger. I already have a Brothers Computerized Sewing Machine that I love, but I wanted my edges finished in an easier fashion, so I ended up deciding to get a serger. After a lot of research, I decided to go with the Brother 1034D due to the price and ease of use. I'm not a very patient sewer or crafter, so I wanted something that I could just set up and go. With the Brother 1034D, I was able to do just that... I didn't even have to thread it to start practicing on it. I pulled it out of the box, plugged it in, and started sewing. It came with a regular foot, gathering foot (I think, I haven't played around with that foot yet), and a blind hem foot. The blind hem foot is my FAVORITE and I use it to finish all of my hems! I've been using the serger almost nightly with no problems at all... except for when I accidentally didn't see a pin on the wrong side of the fabric... OOPS!! DO NOT USE PINS WHEN SERGING AT ALL!! I read all of the warnings about that and had thought I got all of the pins out, but when I was doing a blind hem, I guess I missed a pin that was on the opposite side of the fabric and ended up breaking one of the tiny needle points on my needle plate... Thankfully, I was able to get a replacement part quickly for about $30 and was able to change out the plate for the new one with ease. I was still able to sew without that one needle point on my plate, but could not do a rolled stitch until it was replaced. - LESSON LEARNED! I'm still playing around with my new machine and have A LOT left to learn, but I'm super happy and thrilled with my purchase!

Easy to thread and sew. I keep it in a wooden crate with handles and can carry it from storage to the sunniest room in the house for sewing. There is a bit of a learning curve for someone who has only used an antique sewing machine, but I enjoyed learning how to blind hem stretchy fabrics and create fun projects from t-shirts.

Love this serger. Once upon a time I owned and loved a Babylock Evolve. This was a very expensive, 8-thread serger with lots of options, including cover stitch, jet air threading and the special wave stitch. After my daughter got older and I wasn't sewing as much, I sold the machine. In the past year I've been sewing quite a bit again, and quickly realized how much I missed my serger and started looking for a new one. After a lot of research I ended up with the Brother. Just for background, I've been a home sewer for over 30 years and am currently an apparel technology student. I purchased my serger about 6 months ago and I am quite happy with it! Right out of the box it was quite easy to setup and use. I do have experience with sergers but I feel like the instructions are well written and will help most people be successful. There is a nice manual and a dvd. My biggest fear was threading, however it is actually really simple and takes less than five minutes. One of the reasons I had strongly favored Babylock in the past was because of a fear of threading. I realize now that the thousands extra spent on the Babylock is just not worth it. My Brother runs great, and I've been able to serge most fabrics without having to adjust the tension. There are some wonderful Youtube videos that demonstrate threading the machine. It's also very easy to convert to a beautiful rolled hem. I've sewn everything from woven cottons, knitwear, swimwear and delicate tulle on the serger with no issue. One feature that really appeals to me is the widespread availability of support on the internet, there is a huge FB group devoted to this model and tons of helpful blogs and sites.

This serger is wonderful. After struggling to use my old Singer serger, for years, I finally decided I needed to try another serger. What a world of difference this is. Yes, I already knew the basics of serging, but with this Brother serger, I was able to sit down to it and realized it was so much easier to operate than my Singer. Of course I referred to the booklet that came with the machine, but I can say that the instructions were clear and I was able to adjust the settings effectively, with each change of fabric or garment seam, without much difficulty. In other words, I actually understood what adjustments I needed to make for each change, as opposed to "guessing" or "trial and error" to change stitch size or pressure. Serging is so much more enjoyable now that I have this machine.

I think if you're looking at this machine, you're either a) new to serging or b) impressed by the price and interested in the quality. I'm completely new to sergers, but I did my homework before buying this one, and for the price and the performance, this serger has a perfect balance. I was also concerned about being able to figure out how to use it on my own (so many people talk about taking a class) but within a day I felt like I knew it inside and out. It's setup is uncomplicated and I was able to get right to work. There's something to be said about passing over the machine that can "do it all" and buying one that just does what you need. 1) The "how-to" videos are wonderful for the visual learner. You can pick up the same knowledge from the thorough instruction book(s) included, but the videos reinforce the book. Watching the video on "threading" once, and following the line drawings on the machine itself, I was able to thread the machine in 5 minutes. (It's really not that hard - it's all color coded and the steps are numbered, but the videos help) 2) Included are two additional feet, one for a blind hem/flatlock and another for gathering ruffles as you sew. Together, they themselves are an $60 value. The feet are "snap-on" (when I read about that online I instantly thought of breakable plastic, but the feet are primarily metal with some plastic pieces on the blind hem foot) - the "snap-on" construction is very easy to use and solid (i.e. nothing is going to snap OFF over time) 3) It's very easy to set the tension and the manual has a very clear chart on troubleshooting uneven stitches (with 4 threads, there are multiple things that can be off with the tension). 4) The company description says that it does 22 stitch functions, which I think is a little misleading (it does the basic stuff and they show different applications for the basics). THIS IS WHAT IT DOES: 1. 3/4-thread overlock (uses 4 threads; best for use with knits or upholstery fabric) 2. 3-thread overlock (general use) in two widths - 3mm (using only the right needle) and 5mm (using only the left) 3. Rolled hem (great for edges of napkins, pajama bottoms, frilly skirts, etc) 4. Flatlock stitch (decorative or flat seams) 5. Blind hem THIS IS WHAT IT DOESN'T DO: 1. Coverlock stitch (stretchy stitch with two straight lines on the front of the fabric). If you're sewing for yourself (i.e. not selling what you make), you can fake this stitch on your regular zigzag sewing machine with a twin needle. It's not quite the same, but close enough for me. 2. Chain stitch (a semi-straight stitch, similar to a regular sewing machine but easier to rip out (i.e. good for basting) and a good reinforcement for upholstery) Other sergers I looked at that did the coverlock stitch in addition to overlock, etc. had complicated and time consuming adjustments to be made to switch to the coverlock. If you're going to use it a lot, consider getting a separate machine that does it (the Brother model is 2340CV). The one feature the 1034D is missing for me is the ability to do a 3-thread overlock and a chain stitch at the same time - good for upholstery but something available only on a 5 thread machine. 5) Nice little things: 1. You have the option of using regular thread spools (cheaper and smaller if you don't need 1000 yards x 4 of whatever color you're buying) 2. You use regular needles - so you can use them in both your regular sewing machine and your serger 3. It's really easy to control speed with the foot pedal - very responsive 4. Disabling the knife (that trims your fabric as you sew) is done with just the flick of a switch 5. Differential feed allows you to sew any thickness of fabric, line up stripes evenly, etc.

I have read reviews on how the directions are difficult to follow or unclear and therefore difficult to use the machine. Based on the price, I decided to risk it and see for myself. Please note: I have never used or threaded a serger before. The unit was lighter than I expected. It came pre-thread. My 6 year old daughter and I went through the instructions page by page and were able to gain understanding of the settings without initially re-threading. We practiced setting adjustments on scrap material until thread ran out. The text for specific threading order was in the instructions, but I thought that applied to initial threading, not re-threading. It applies to re-threading as well. Else, the serger will not operate correctly. When threading the upper loop, instructions and pictures were not sufficient to find a threading hole. One YouTube video fixed that. I read that removing or adding needles was troublesome. I just took pre-caution ensuring both needles did not fall out. I have made about 8 articles of clothing with this serger now. I absolutely love it. The only thing I wish it had was a hidden compartment to store the needles, feet, and tools like my sewing machine does. It does need to be a little more secured to your working surface. Due to motions of the machine it can move a little.

I am an impulsive shopper, however I actually looked into which serger to purchase. I looked at the best serger of 2015 results and this was #1. I am not disappointed! I LOVE my serger! It arrived at my office around lunch time. I have my packages shipped there so my husband doesn't see all of them...lol Anyway, I was so excited to pull it out of the box at lunch and it was already threaded for me! I had some cloth diaper inserts I was working on with my mom's serger, it was acting up and we could not get it threaded correctly to stitch correctly. That is when I decided mothers day was coming up and I deserved this machine. It works beautifully! I finished several diaper inserts then then thread ran out, I will admit I was a little anxious to retread it. It was very easy! Just follow the directions in the manual and you are in great shape I changed all the thread and away I went. Finishing 10 diaper inserts and 2 sets of reusable nursing pads, perfect! I have so many projects in mind to use with my serger I just need TIME! I would recommend this to a friend and I would buy it again. If you found this review helpful please mark below. Thanks!

I purchased this machine as my go to machine (Janome) is in transit from the UK as we've just moved, however I needed to sew and I thought I'd take a try at the brother! It's a lovely machine, quiet compared to the janome and has way more extras in comparison. The price is fantastic an absolute bargain. Easy to use and easy to thread, it comes Pre threaded with colour threads I highly recommend buying a set of 4 threads for its arrival as I personally didn't want to sew with multi colour threads red/green/blue/yellow colour coded to threading the machine. I've added a picture of the baby clothes I made on the machine. Thank you Amazon
