The cheapest french butter dish but great quality!
it is so nice to have fresh butter without spoiling for anybody who has never used one of these you have a small cup that you feel with room temperature butter that goes inside of a larger cup filled with water suggest doing it over the sink the water seals in the butter flavor and freshness. You can use this in cool weather from Autumn to Spring in the Northeast. Baguette bread spreadable fresh butter and you're in heaven.

Butter Kept Fresh
I really like my little butter keeper. I hate trying to spread butter from the refrigerator but keeping some in a butter dish on the counter caused my butter to turn a bit darker yellow on the outside, sometimes to melt a bit, and the flavor was a bit off. With this butter keeper, my butter looks and tastes as good as when it is freshly put in it and spreads so smoothly. It holds just the right amount and doesn't take much water in it to keep things fresh. It looks nice sitting on my counter. Very satisfied customer.

Cat lovers rejoice!!
Our butter has been taking up space in our cupboard for years because our cats are relentless butter fiends. I've tried other American style butter dishes but each time it would be broken within a week so I gave up. I have the Norpro a shot because I've purchased their products before and I figured between the design and the weight of the stoneware it might be enough to foil the cats. It worked!! It hasn't budged from its spot. Bonus is it keeps the butter amazingly fresh. I like the handle too because it is wide and flat enough to sit on the table when I'm use. My only complaint might be that I wished it held 2 sticks. I have teenage boys so I am refilling it several times per week.

Recommended .. keep the water changed and it works great
I have been using this for a few weeks now and I have had no problems keeping my butter fresh. Because it is near my sink I am pretty good at remembering to change the water out as directed but even if I wait 5 or 6 days it doesn't seem to be a problem. It doesn't hold a huge amount of butter but I just add to it as I go along. Usually when I have a small amount of refrigerated butter out for cooking I just leave what's left to soften and after dinner I smoosh it (technical term) into the bell. I really like having soft butter on hand all the time. This works really well. Recommend Update: July 3, 2018. Have had this for a little over a year now. I had mold grow once and that's it. I had recently changed the water so I think I just contaminated the butter somehow. Haven't had a problem since. I have found that I only need to change the water once or twice a week and it works great. I do throw it in the dishwasher every so often when I use the last of the butter. It holds a 1/4 cup of butter (1 stick). Still super happy with it.

Better butter keeper!
Cold butter caused me to spend my first forty some odd years convinced that I didn’t like butter. This has changed everything! It’s so much better to have spreadable butter available. I don’t understand the reviews where people say their butter won’t stay in the cup. What kind of non-sticky butter are they using? I use Land O’ Lakes and it won’t fall out if I try to sling it.

Fits 1/4 pound of butter perfectly
I love this little butter crock. I have already seen praise for how easy it is to spread butter when using this crock (true!), And how the butter seems to be less prone to accumulate crumbs (also true!). I have had it for two weeks. The ceramic has a smooth finish, colors are as pictured, and the crock is weighty enough to feel good in your hand, but not prohibitively heavy. It fits one stick (one quarter of a pound) of butter perfectly—fills it all the way to the rim, so there isn’t never a left over nub to refrigerate. The top of the crock which you put the butter in can balance on its own on a flat surface, so you can have both hands free to do whatever you need to do. I keep my house rather warm when I’m not at home (78-80 degrees F), and once when I came home the butter had slipped from the top of the crock into the water at the bottom, I think from being a little over warm. The butter was fine, not liquid, but very soft. I considered getting a marble crock instead of a ceramic one and think maybe marble would be less affected by the heat. Below 78 degrees I have had no problems with it. It was more affordable than a “traditional” butter dish, or a marble crock and I am very happy with my purchase.

Gorgeous antique-looking butter keeper which works well and at a nice price
I have had my Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper for years now, and I love it--what a handy kitchen gadget this is! I don't know what I would do without it for keeping butter fragrant and soft. I also love how absolutely gorgeous it looks on my kitchen counter, like a relic from the distant past when there were no refrigerators. And, though some owners have complained about mold occasionally forming around the keeper's edge or of the butter falling from inside the keeper into the receptacle that holds the water, I find both events to be only tiny inconveniences: If the occasional bit of mold forms, I very gently wipe it with a piece of paper towel. And, if the butter falls from the keeper into the water, I quickly scoop it with a spoon, all in one piece, and place back inside the keeper--either tiny "chore" takes only seconds and is no big deal. I also do not find any health concerns related to the mold because I wipe it off immediately; my only consideration is changing the water every several days. So, my bottom line is that I do love my Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper and feel its price is really reasonable for such a lovely practical gadget, and I highly recommend it. Amazing
I can't believe I waited so long to get one of these. Holds a stick of butter that lasts us about a week maybe longer if we don't have bread with dinner. I only use unsalted butter and have no issues with mold. I change the water every Monday and Thursday. I also add a few pinches salt to the water, since the butter is unsalted. The only issue I have is there's no water line in the cup, not even an amount in the directions on the box, so I'm probably over filling it but it works. Make sure the stick of butter is room temp, don't soften it in the microwave it will be too soft/warm to adhere to the ceramic. Use a spoon to spread the butter in the cup a couple Tbsp at a time, not the entire stick at once to avoid air pockets. If you get air pockets the butter will slide into the water. Don't add new butter on top of older butter, it won't stay together. Wash and dry the Keeper before refilling it.

Quirky item that's a must-have if you prefer real butter
I'd never even heard of a "butter bell" or "butter keeper" before my mother asked for one for Mother's Day. And the concept seemed a little strange to me -- why another special container just for keeping butter? But I do try to get her things that she wants and needs, so I went ahead and purchased one for her. And since my mother and I currently share a home, it ended up being a product we both used. Looking back, I wonder why I balked initially. While this seemed to be just another odd kitchen gadget at first, now it's become a very handy item to have in the kitchen, especially at the dinner table. The purpose of a "butter bell" is to keep butter soft and spreadable without spoilage. The concept is fairly simple -- put a little water in the bottom of the ceramic jar, fill the "bell" with butter, and store the bell upside-down over the water. This keeps it fresh and spreadable for days, without refrigeration and without the butter becoming rock-hard and unspreadable. If your family prefers margarine products over butter, you probably don't have much use for this. But if you're like us and prefer butter, especially the fresh homemade kind (yes, we make our own butter), then this is a must-have item. You won't regret this purchase.

This bowl is terrific!
This little bowl is fantastic. I kept my butter on the counter in a traditional butter dish so it's soft enough to spread on bread without tearing it to shreds. The problem was within a few days, the stick would develop a darker "skin" that tasted stale. I would simply slice off the oxidized layer to find the unaffected butter underneath. But what a waste! What this little bowl does is eliminate the oxidation causing your butter to go stale. It works by placing a stick of softened butter into the bowl. Then add about a half inch of tap water to the crock. The water acts as a barrier to keep oxygen from coming into contact with the butter. The water simply rolls off the butter when you're ready to use. After several days, I haven't found my butter go stale yet. I just replace the water every day or so. The lid stops the water from evaporation too quickly. This is a big hit in our house and we are officially fans. I'd give it ten stars if I could. To those experiencing mold, you must only use salted butter. To those that have their butter falling out, I'm assuming it's not soft enough too cling to the sides of the bowls. Or there are air bubbles between the butter and the bowl. If that still doesn't fix your butter go buy squeeze butter out of a bottle. (Yick.)Problem solved.
