When I first tried this on my dog, she did nothing but rub her nose and have a fit trying to get it off. I spent about a week, putting in on her for short periods, giving her treats, trying to make this leader associated with positive experiences. It just seemed like it wasn't going to work for her so I set it aside. Last week, I got it out again, put it on her, gave her a treat, and immediately took her outside for a walk. It worked! This time she accepted it. Other than a moment here and there, she is doing great with this and no more pulling. It's like walking a completely different dog. I should add, that I had skipped her walk for almost two weeks (a very long time for her). She had gotten to the point that her front-clip harness wasn't a deterrent anymore, so I thought I'd just take a break. After not going for her daily outings for so long, she was more than happy to mostly ignore the gentle leader and focus on smelling all the great things she'd been missing out on. Now we are back to our daily walks. The biggest difference being that I am having fun on the walk too, now that I don't have to spend so much energy working on her behavior. I do still put a harness on her in case I need to grab it for additional control (which is rare) but I only attach the leash to the head lead. I have a leash with a lighter clip on it for that. The leash clip that attaches to the harness is much thicker and heavier. All I can say is .... Gentle Leader for the win-win!! SAFETY TIP UPDATE: A couple times, I've had near-escape incidences, both indoors at the vets office thankfully. Once, the leash somehow became unclipped and another, she pulled the lead off her face. Now, to ensure a double-attachment, I put the leader on as usual, then I use a carabiner to secure the base of the leash clip to the loop in her collar. This way, should she get the leader off again or the leash become unclipped, the leash will still be connected to her collar. (see attached photo showing left/right side comparisons showing both parts of what I've described) I find that this setup does not cause any issues while walking nor stop the effectiveness of the leader.

I rescued an extremely dog aggressive dog. It is almost impossible to take her for walks. She’s a German Shepherd and can be scary when she sees other dogs on a walk. I bought this several months ago at the advice of a trainer. But when I got it, she hated it and I felt bad using it, so I put it away. Fast forward several months. Aggression on walks got worse. So we decided to give this another try. To really try it this time. Not just for a few minutes. OH MY GOSH! It has made all the difference!!! She’s still aggressive, but she knows she can’t get the momentum going while she has this on. No more rabid looking police dog on our walks. We’re still working on stopping the barking, but now we actually CAN with this. I will say, our vet tech hooked the leash to the gentle leader AND her collar, which I recommend if you have a really aggressive powerful dog, just in case they are able to slip it off you have the collar still hooked for back up. If you have a non aggressive puller, I imagine this would be even better! Highly recommend it!

I wish I could give the "gentle leader" ten stars!! This is amazing! I'm disabled, about 90lbs, and very weak, so you can imagine me walking my 185lbs Great Dane! He has no idea how strong he is, so any little pull or jerk would end up with me on the ground. Just like a horse, the best way to control an animal that's much bigger to you is to have control of their head. It doesn't hurt them but it allows you to control where their attention and focus is, which is very important in dealing and training large animals. I suggest watching and utilizing the tips and directions that are given on the DVD that comes with the Gentle Leader. My boy learned in one day (with the help of some yummy treats!) that when we put the leader on that means he gets to go for a walk! He shoves his snout right in now and the best part is, he CAN'T pull me at all!! This thing is a life saver!

Pros and Cons for TL;DR: PROS - Affordable price compared to harnesses. - plenty of options for colors for the whole pack - thorough and complete instructions - product arrive as promised. - immediately reduced or eliminated most if not all pulling during walks. - humane. CONS - My lab has a very short snout, and it did seem to restrict her from opening her mouth as much as she would have liked. She still can eat and drink water and play fetch with it on, so not a huge deal, but something to consider. A little backstory. Everyday I walk a 75 lbs German Shepard and a 70 lbs Labrador retriever. I'm a pretty large guy, so I never really took much offense to a little tugging from my dogs as puppies and that inevitably led to some horrible habits. I had resigned myself to getting a nice shoulder workout every time I took them out. We had been using full body harnesses that clipped on the back, but all that did was give my dogs more leverage. I tried training and patience, but was at the end of my leash. (HA). I am inherently opposed to choker collars because it's not my dogs fault I was a bad owner all along. Enter the Gentle Leader. I'll admit, the product isn't intuitive out of the box, but the instructions and DVD clarify everything very well. Getting it on and keeping it on my dogs was tough until I got the fit right, but once I found it they couldn't shake it or paw it off. It's recommended you ease your dogs into it by giving them a reward while wearing it repeatedly. Well, my dogs favorite thing is their walk, so I used it as their reward the first time they wore them. After about 100 yards of shaking and fidgeting with it, they got over the nose strap. We came across numerous children, dogs, and cars. I didn't even get a pull, let alone the usual hard yank that would accompany those occurrences without a Gentle Leader. This immediately took my dogs from D grade walkers to B+. Hopefully we can make it to A very soon. Honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made on Amazon, just behind my on sale $17 XL furminator.

This is an excellent tool for keeping a strong dog by your side. This is the third gentle leader I have purchased for my 6 1/2 year Goldendoodle. I only have to buy a new one every few years because the stink from his slobber just won't wash out! I am glad for this latest purchase because they have improved the design of the strap that rests across the dog's nose. It now has a piece of padding sewn under the strap. And this seems like it would make it more comfortable for the dog. I appreciate the gentle leader as a means of walking my dog because there is no tugging around his neck. He has never fought against the leader, not even the first time it was put on him. The leader made it possible for my children to walk him, even when they weighed less than he did. The design really works.

I am now planning to buy the bigger leader since my growing doodle is only 7 months but she fits the medium one fine for now I just want to be prepared. So before buying this I bought countless kong harnesses and regular collars and even the spike collar and none worked at all. She jumped on everyone she would literally pull me down the street so I just stopped walking her bc she was too strong for me. I came across this product after seeing my friends video of her walking her rottie and asked what was on the dog and she explained and suggested I tried it and omg I cannot express how happy I am that I did. So fast forward got it in the mail and to do around the muzzle I put a treat in the middle a few times and until she would let me fit it to her(don't give up bc my doodle is crazy hyper and she finally pet me do it) anyways I walked her around my front yard for about 15 minutes and then took it off. The next day it was nice and I said im going to take her for a walk and I was shocked! She wasn't able to pull me. Now granted she twirled around in the beginning thinking she could figure out a way to get it off and tried to dig it off but after a few times of her trying to get it off and failing she decided okay I give up. So first time I have been able to walk her and not have burns all over my hands or look like a complete fool. Clearly she will benefit from daily walking and soon I hope to have her fully leash trained but there is hope and I suggest giving this a try because it truly works!

If I could give this 10 stars I would. We have an 80 pound golden retriever that is 3 years old. We have always had a terrible time walking him due to pulling. He would drag my wife around and make it miserable for me to walk him as well. I watched some YouTube videos about conditioning him with the gentle leader and followed the instructions. Two short training sessions later he had no problems wearing it. Now every time I get it out he comes over to me, sits down and puts his face forward for me to put it on him. He LITERALLY walks next to me with out ANY pulling. It's like he is a different dog. If you have problems with your dog pulling on a traditional leash get this now! You won't be disappointed!!!

This PetSafe Gentle Leader Headcollar has been a LIFESAVER. We have a German Shepherd and have tried many types of collars, leashes, and obedience training with little success. She used to pull constantly when on a leash and because of her size, my wife was uncomfortable taking her out on a leash for fear of being pulled down. She is also an anxious dog. We wanted to introduce her slowly to the headcollar as she is weary of things going around/near her snout. We used the training methods described in the included DVD to ensure that she would have a positive experience and association with the headcollar. She did a great job wearing it in the house and in our backyard, but the big test for us was taking her around the neighborhood. She did an EXCELLENT job. Sure, there were a few instances where we had to correct her, but it was nothing compared to our old methods and she has continued to improved over time. She has improved so much that my wife feels comfortable taking her on walks and runs because she no longer pulls at all. This product has not only made us happy, confident, and helped build a better relationship with our dog, but it also has allowed her to get more exercise and just be outside more. I definitely recommend watching the DVD included with the product. It has so much great information that helps you make sure that you are correctly positioning/fitting the product on your dog. Also, the training guide and information included are very useful in making sure that your dog has a positive experience with the headcollar. Once you and your dog get used to putting the product on, it is very easy to use. I HIGHLY recommend this product!
