Great ant farm!
It arrived quickly and packaged well. I was able to order the ants online with the certificate came with it. The ants arrived in five days. I had to buy the sand and a local store. So far it is amazing the ants have already made several tunnels in just one day . My daughter loves it.

Awesome Ant Farm!
We bought this for my son for his 8th birthday because it's what he said he wanted when we told him he could not get a pet snake. I chose this ant farm because it seemed to get the best reviews. My son's birthday is November 8, so we mailed off for our ants the very next day. We received the ants on Nov. 27 (the day before Thanksgiving). So, it took about 2.5 weeks to get them. We filled the ant farm with damp sand, pushed the cotton pieces down into the 3 holes to help them start their tunnels, then added the ants. The ants we received were harvester ants. I don't know how many there were, but only one didn't survive the trip through the mail, which I thought was amazing. We live in Texas, and it happened to be cold, so I'd recommend ordering when it is cool. They won't survive the heat for sure! (They actually looked dead when I took them out of the mailbox, but they just become less active when they are cold, which is how you get them in the ant farm to begin with) Within a few hours, the ants had begun to dig tunnels. My son was fascinated! The next morning, they had 3 very long tunnels. It has now been a week, and they have quite a system of tunnels, including tunnels on the upper level. He is taking it to school tomorrow because his teacher really wants to see it. We did also follow the directions and made some covers out of black construction paper, though they don't really seem to care. We've fed them twice (apple and granola) and added water frequently, as the directions say, and it has worked out VERY well. It is built well and is easy to see the ants working. The ants are supposed to live "up to" 6 months, but we'll see. So far, it has been interesting for the whole family to watch them. I highly recommend this ant farm. I almost went with a gel one, but with sand, you can just dump it out and get more sand and more ants when they die. Not sure what you do with the gel. Plus, sand is way more realistic. Watching the ants carry bits of sand is fascinating! (I know, I know, you think I'm nuts for watching ants, but you'll see!)

Much better than the Uncle Milton brand!!!
The most common ant farm seems to be the Uncle Milton one, along with brands that seem identical to Uncle Milton(probably just a relabel). The GeoSafari ant farm doesn't feel like the plastic will crack when filling it with sand, the Uncle Milton one you have to be very careful as you pack in the sand. Also the GeoSafari ant farm has 3 feeding holes, although not a big deal compared to just 1 feeding hole on the Uncle Milton, it makes it easier if you are trying to spread water to the whole ant farm. I probably have more experience on ant farms compared to many of you reading this. Although the GeoSafari brand is still a "kid ant farm" it is the best one in this category. Uncle Milton is horrible, please avoid. Also check out Ant Canada on youtube if you are looking into getting a more pro level ant farm.

I'd probably buy this again.
We are very happy with this. I overfilled it (now I know!) and the ants moved the sand up to a mountain in the top where they can reach the top. The water dropper was not sealed so I put clear tape over the hole. I also think the other pusher-tool isn't good for much more than just pushing. To fish out debris, I use some hemostats. To store the tools, I took some clear tape and made some little holders on the back of the top portion similar to the straw holders on the side of a can of air to clean out your keyboard.

Cool learning toy
We purchased this ant farm for our son last Christmas. It was a great success!! Easy to mange and very interesting to see all the ants work together and build a colony. Very easy to assemble, and reusable for multiple times.

Fun for all ages
Great ant habitat. The kids loved it at first but lost interest quickly. I think my husband and I had more fun watching the ants than the kids did.

We got sand from Home Depot and it’s not the best. I have to keep adding water to moisten ...
Remember to add enough sand before adding the ants and find the right sand that will not dry out and ruin their tunnels. We got sand from Home Depot and it’s not the best. I have to keep adding water to moisten it so they can build.

Don’t listen to the whiners. This is a great ant farm!
We’ve had this ant farm 48 hours & we have enjoyed how fast the ants work. It’s fascinating & gets the whole family watching the tunnels form. For those looking for an ant farm this seems to be the one. There’s people here complaining that it didn’t come with sand or ants. But it does state that, they didn’t read it carefully so because of their lack of research they gave this a 1 Star. Did they really expect ants would be living inside a box for years till it’s purchased? If you plan of gifting this, buy the sand (play sand) ahead of time. Also the kit comes with a coupon for the right kind of ants (harvesting) so if you’re smart.. get the kit, open it to use the coupon online, close the box back up. Buy the sand while it takes a week for the ants & that way your child will have everything come that special day. People are so hung up about telling their child to wait for the ants to arrive they forget a lesson could be learned.. called patience. Our boys had the kit 2 weeks before getting the sand & ants to finally set up. You know what? No one died! In fact they were more excited because of the anticipation. So I give this 5 stars. If you read the directions it tells you not to drop water in it because it can get moldy. To the person who got mold.. you didn’t read the directions.. or you got the wrong sand. You are to use the dropper given & only a few drops every other day is enough. Play sand is moist & easy to manipulate for the ants. Another tip. Put the ants in the fridge for 5 minutes before adding them to the habitat. No longer or you’d kill them. Cooling them down helps getting them in with out them falling all over the counter. I got bit hard & my finger swelled & turned red. Throbbed & on fire for 6 hours but I’m still giving this a 5 star because that was my mistake for thinking they don’t bite. Just be careful. Best to cool them down first so they slide right into the opening. To those who complain about ants climbing out. Nonsense. They don’t suddenly jump out when you open the hatch to drop in food or water. This is great for classrooms & observing at home but definitely an adult should do the assembly & maintenance.
