Newborn Brothers Caulk Gun - Great balance of Quality vs Price vs Simplicity

I grew up a house painter, as my Dad owned a house painting business - in fact he still does and still runs it at 78 years old! So, I had a caulk gun in my hand since I was 8 years old... and have logged many hours with a caulk gun. What I look for in a caulk gun is a balance of: - Build Quality - I want one well constructed of heavier gauge metal, with good welds that won't bust after a few hours use. The gun must be heavy enough not to flex when under trigger stress, but not too heavy that your arm feels it after a while. Finally, the trigger mechanism must be solid, smooth and not be built to break down after a year. Oh, and it must be solid enough to survive short distance falls occasionally off a step ladder! - Price - of course, this quality usually comes at a price, but you can spend too much on anything - so it needs to hit the "sweet spot" relative to other caulk guns you might compare it to. - Simplicity - this is borne out of personal preference - many "higher end" caulk guns have all sorts of features, buttons, levers sticking out, with interesting forms that make some even look creature-like. There is nothing wrong with this, many of them have a strong following. For my taste, I like my gun to be solid and simple. Does it have a "poker"? Does it have a way to release the pressure? Is the trigger smooth, and the plunger easy to move back / forth? Will it survive a fall off a step ladder? It is just one of those intangibles - when it comes to caulk guns, I subscribe to the theory that I want less features so there is less to go wrong. Based on my criteria above, I was impressed with this Newborn caulk gun. Five Stars - It is simple, solid and priced well. Unbelievably Awesome! Yes, I just said that about a caulk gun.

I have been building a steel building and new I would be doing a lot of caulking. I absolutely hated the caulk guns I owned and had been using this building as an excuse to buy a few tools that were of better value. I spent an hour researching calk guns. I know, pretty dumb and seemingly a waste of time, however, this thing is awesome. I just assumed that caulk would always continue to flow for a bit after pressing the trigger. It did that on all previously used caulk guns. So, you always have to be careful where you lay them, it's messy annoying and leads to rushing at times because the stinking caulk keeps pouring out. Not the case with this gun. The caulk comes when you press the trigger. That's it. It only flows when you are squeezing it. It's not revolutionary but when you use it, and it works as you had always hoped a caulk gun would, it's worth celebrating.

Terrific control, a must-have for applying elastomeric sealant

When I applied silicone caulk in my bathrooms and J-channels of outside windows last year, I used a 160:20 Caulk Gun with a pressure-release latch. In a contractor’s hands, the study pressure of that caulk gun could be an advantage; for me it created a mess as the gun continued to push out caulk while I fumbled to pull the pressure release latch to stop the flow. I now needed to use Big Stretch elastomeric sealant on my baseboards, and a dripless caulk gun was recommended. The Newborn 930-GTD Drip-Free Smooth Hex Rod Cradle Caulking Gun was an Amazon bestseller and a frequently-bought-together item with Big Stretch, so I ordered it too. The Newborn caulk gun had terrific handling; in particular, when you release trigger pressure, the flow stops immediately every time. For an elastomeric sealant that can cure quickly, this caulk gun is the best choice to control the bead size and rate of flow and to stop the flow when mistakes occur. I used it for almost 5 hours straight without hand pain, and only have a slightly sore thumb this morning. This caulk gun even cost $3 less than the one I used last year; had I known about the handling, I would have chosen the Newborn for that type of job too. Because of the controlled flow, there was significantly less waste, and I finished the baseboard job with a little over one 10.5 oz. tube of Big Stretch. Great results with the first use. This will be my go-to caulk gun for future DIY jobs.

UPDATE: Just bought another of these caulk guns....still have the first one and its going strong after almost two years of daily use.... Just needed a fresh backup. Have shot at AT LEAST 450 - 500 tubes of caulk through this thing and it still works like a charm BEST CAULK GUN OUT THERE...PERIOD. I run a small property rehab and handyman business here in Central FL. I bought this gun about 5 months ago and it is of high quality. I use it several times weekly with various caulks and adhesives. As soon as you stop pulling the trigger the flow stops. Not much ooze to speak of except for maybe some of the less viscous stuff like Liquid Nails, etc.... ( and just a small bead at the end of the tip, mostly ) but if you pull the release it stops altogether. used to have a sweet gun, but left a jobsite and came back, and a junk gun was sitting in its place. good times. since then i haven't been able to find a gun i really liked. am amazed at how well this one works for the price. have bought pieces of junk for more. if you don't want a mess when caulking, not always easy for average joe, then go with the gun. it's well made, comes with poker stick and blade to cut tubes. my only complaint would be that it works too well. sometimes you need a steady stream of caulk over a certain distance but you have to keep pulling the trigger to keep more coming out. easy enough to adjust to though. UPDATE 2 years later, thing still works like a charm...and that's after it was accidentally run over by a car

Oh so very nice...

I've always had inexpensive caulk guns. You know the kind. The $3 guns from the home center that continue to pump out caulk at an alarming rate even after you've quit pulling the trigger? Since I knew I was going to have to caulk all my home's windows (and there are a lot), and I knew a lot of the interior painting I'd planned on doing was going to require some caulking beforehand, I decided to "splurge" and buy a better caulk gun. Oh my. I am so glad I did. I used the gun the first time while prepping for a painting job, and it is so nice to have a gun that doesn't exude a thick stream of caulk when I stop pulling the trigger. No more frantically looking for the paper towel to set the end over. The ergonomic handle is another plus. I didn't think much of it, but I have small hands and repetitive stress problems, so it was a relief to find a gun that actually fit. I'd never realized how important that could be. The other real plus is the permanently attached rod that pokes through the seal some caulking manufacturers have in their caulk tubes. That alone makes the gun worth the price. No more looking around for something long enough to break the seal. And no more wiping the tool off before the caulk gets hard. So nice to have. So if it sounds like I'm thrilled with this caulk gun, you'd be right. I'm sure there are some negatives, but after always using the cheap guns, using this was just so nice. I won't go back to using the cheapest gun I can get my hands on.

Who Knew A Caulking Gun Deserved 5 Stars??

I never thought I would be writing a 5 star review for a caulking gun, but here it is. As an avid DIYer, and a woman at that, I have done caulking for years. But I always bought the cheapo big box caulking guns, thinking there couldn't be much difference. Well, all our windows needed recaulking and this popped up as an "add on" item. Mainly I wanted the "C" shaped handle that allows the gun to hang on a ladder while using. This product is so much more! It has padded handles, which my "over 55" year old arthritic hands appreciate. It does not require a great deal of hand strength to operate, another plus. It has the "C" shaped handle and hangs several places on the ladder, saving a lot of bendovers to pick the caulking gun back up. But best of all, it is a non-ratcheting type of pushing mechanism so that when you pause pushing the handle, SO DOES IT!! No more caulk pulsing out at the tip even after you pull the handle back. You don't have to with this gun! The caulk stops flowing when you let go, but still flows perfectly while you are pushing the handle. Anyhow, this is well worth the few extra dollars it cost over the cheapo types I bought for years. I would absolutely buy this again!

The perfect caulking tool

I'm a DIYer but I've done enough caulking to truly appreciate the quality and thoughtful design of this gun. I just used it to apply some clear silicone at the base of my front door. The tip cutter, which they don't mention in the description, worked great. I got the small opening I wanted. The seal punch is long enough to reach the seal of any standard caulk no matter how long it is cut. The shaft can be moved forward or back without pressing anything so it's much easier to seat a tube and release it. The gun is comfortable in my hand. I wear large size gloves and the trigger is a little longer than I'd prefer but still no problem to use. It does exactly what it claims. When you release the trigger the flow stops. If you've ever caulked with the cheaper guns, you know the pain of the glob that comes out if you don't release the friction tab after applying a line of caulk. I don't know about more expensive models but this is the best I've used and couldn't ask for more. I would buy this again in a heartbeat if I needed a replacement. I think I'm going to accidentally leave my other caulk guns at friend's houses or donate them to charity. If you've never caulked before, spend a few extra dollars on this. The lack of frustration is well worth it. Don't let anyone borrow it or you'll be back here ordering another one.

The most drip-free and controllable caulk gun on the market

This is the MOST drip-free caulk gun design possible. If drip free is what you want, then this is the gun for you. Once you let go of the trigger there is zero force applied to the caulk tube. Its actually a little weird at first, you have to get used to it. The grip is very comfortable, and the 10:1 thrust ratio is great. Very easy to apply smooth beads of caulk with. More controllable than almost any other caulk gun. The only downside is if you're using a really thick caulk, or a caulk tube that's dried out on the end, this gun doesn't provide as much force as traditional caulk guns due to its drip-free design. When I have a caulk tube with a little bit of dried caulk in the tip, to get it unstuck I grab the entire gun and push it against the ground, applying force to the rod. No big deal, the real solution is to make sure you don't let the caulk tube dry up.

I would have never, ever, in a million years thought that I'd actually enjoy caulking. I've been replacing all of the floor, window, door molding in our house and I've seriously left it uncaulked & unpainted since last summer because I was dreading caulking so much. I went out and purchased an electric/battery powered caulk gun even in hopes of having it go better. I tried that one, alone with a cheap big box store one 2 weeks ago and I was almost in tears thinking that I'd have to caulk the whole house (crown molding included). On a whim I looked on Amazon reviews and came across this, nothing to lose I ordered it. Oh my god. I seriously LOVE caulking now. I'm walking around the house looking for gaps... I kid you not this thing ROCKS. I'm using the same tube of caulk (not just the same time, but the same actual tube) that was giving me so much grief 2 wks ago and it's a dream now. Not a single drip, perfect smooth lines that I can smooth out in a second with my finger tip (hell on the manicure but beats all those plastic/silicone gadgets). BUY THIS THING!
