Great Product

This is an awesome product that works as advertised. Well worth a 5 star rating. However, as a 30+ year senior electronics technician on test and evaluation of the newest military fixed wing fighter/attack aircraft, I replaced their inferior nickel plated mounting hardware with about $20.00 worth of grade 8 bolts, washers, and self locking nuts; stainless steel machine screws, washers, and self locking nuts; and a couple of tubes of non-corrosive gasket maker to seal everything before mounting to prevent moisture from getting trapped between plastic and metal (which could cause rusting). NON-CORROSIVE SEALERS will not have that vinegary smell. Have a pail of soapy water (like you would mix for washing dishes) ready with a rag to wipe off any excess sealer after mounting. This same soapy water can also be used to smooth out the edge with your finger, to a professional look; just keep your fingers wet with the soapy water. If you immediately wipe off your hands with a clean dry rag, and sealer should easily come off. Then finish up by just washing your hands. It would have been nicer had this been designed with a door to cover the control panel; which is made of some type of vinyl and will most certainly deteriorate over time, in the sun, to the point it will become densely clouded and non-transparent.

Easier than expected to Install

Thansks to the really good instructions I was able to install this in about 30-45 minutes. I’m definitely not an electrician or automotive smart but this had very clear instructions and I was able to successfully install and charge and test. I like doing things myself so this gave me independence.

For peace of mine, get it.

I actually enjoyed installing this. I loved the lights....they tell you exactly what is going on. Easy to follow instructions, and its great to know that if all goes south, your trailer still has some stopping ability.

Nothing Better.

Great product. I replaced my old break away controller with this Hopkins and installation was smooth with easy to follow instructions. The LED lights are great, now I can tell if the my controller battery is good and when it's charging.

Worked Fine

Rewired my 7200# car hauler trailer with this. Worked great between junction box and rear of trailer. This replaced the original box where the circuit board had corroded. It was plug and play even though the name on it was different. It was obviously the same unit.

Battery Charging Makes All the Difference

I have two horse trailers that have breakaway systems. I was very careful to hook up the break away cables every time I moved the trailer only to find out that both batteries were dead and would not have worked in spite of my careful hook-ups. I wanted a battery that incorporated a battery charger so the battery would not be too discharged to work. This battery includes a battery charge indicator and will charge if attached to a 12V source (such as during transport for example). I would buy this again and I did purchase two of them, one for each trailer. Also, they are similar in size to the only ones and the installation was straight forward. My old set-up used a non-charging battery in a battery box so the bolt holes were not exactly in the same place. If you are replacing an existing battery you might have to re-drill the holes but otherwise, installation was easy and quick.

Quality product from Hopkins

Just what I needed to get my trailer up and running (legally) again. The unit is really nothing more than a battery that engages the trailer brakes should the trailer become disconnected from your truck, but it's well made and easy to install. The wiring directions are clear and helpful and it can be installed in a matter of minutes. I used one of the seven way junction boxes and was able to tie all the wires directly into that without any ugly splices. After installing I spun the trailer wheels and pulled the break-away cable to test and it worked beautifully. I'd definitely buy again.

It would have been nice if one was included

Used it to replace the old breakaway system on my trailer. Getting this unit was cheaper than getting a replacement battery and charger for the old unit. This model has wiring pigtails that were long enough to reach my trailer wiring harness junction box which eliminated a splice for these wires. The unit is used on a trailer and is holding up well. I bought a carabiner to make it easier to hook the safety cable to my truck. It would have been nice if one was included. Having said that there are probably hundreds of different ways to hook up the safety cable and Hophins can't anticipate which one is best for any giving truck/trailer situation.
