So many beans. More beans than you ever knew you wanted. But you did want them, you needed them too. And now you'll have a whoooole box of beans forever.

We are always looking for something new to add to our backpacking and camping menus. These Santa Fe Instant Southwestern Style Re fried Beans are destined to have a permanent place on that menu. You can easily whip these up by simply adding the beans and boiling water to a zip loc freezer bag and letting it sit for a few minutes. This works best if you can put the bag into an insulated lunch bag or backpacker cozy to help retain the heat. The results are near restaurant quality food on the trail. If you want to be creative, you can mix these beans with some tvp or dried hamburger, freeze dried corn, and some spices to make a top notch burrito. Adding a little cheese can put it all over the top. Backpacking and camping meals do not need to be bland and boring - and certainly they do not need to be hard.

Prepare beans per instructions on back label. Then add a tablespoon of bacon grease and 1 glove of crushed fresh garlic. Blend together and use your refried beans for buritos or whatever you want refried beans for. Enjoy!

We had previously tried the Santa Fe fat-free dehydrated refried beans, and liked them a lot. So, we decided to give these a try too. Despite the fact that these are labeled "southwestern style," which sounds like these might contain some spices, this product contains only beans, salt, and partially hydrogenated corn oil. They are delicious! The small amount of oil gives them a bit of a creamier texture than the fat-free beans. Of course, partially hydrogenated oil is not the best thing in the world for the old arteries, so the fat-free version is probably a better choice for many people. (see link below) These refried beans taste much better than the canned variety. One could easily pass them off to unsuspecting guests as being home made. Next time I make them, however, I will use a bit less water, as I prefer a slightly thicker consistency. One nice thing about this product is that it comes packed in a zip-lock type bag, so it is easy to fix a smaller amount if an entire package is just too much. Santa Fe Bean Co., Instant Fat Free Vegetarian Refried Beans, 7.25-Ounce Pack (Pack of 8)

We have bought these regularly since discovering them in the camping section of the supermarket. They taste really good and have a nice texture. What we particularly like is they are vegetarian and come in a resealable package, so you can just take out as much as you need for 1 serving using a 1 cup water to one cup product ratio. We do season them to our liking with a little garlic & chili powder. You can also adjust the thickness just by adding less or more water. While camping, we even made a soup with these beans by adding a 2:1 ratio of water; tossing in salsa & diced jalapenos and sprinkling cheese and broken tortilla chips on top.

The Santa Fe Bean Co. Southwestern Refried Beans cannot be beaten. They are cheap, lightweight, and compactable. I used them on my 2016 through hike of the Appalachian trail as the main source of protein and fiber. They became part of my go-to meal of instant rice, refried beans, cheese, taco seasoning, and Fritos. I love these and will allows keep them in my cupboard for quick overnight trips.

Family loves these. I am shocked at how good they are. I bought them to use for no-cook backpacking, which they work GREAT for. But we also cook them on the stove and they are better than most restaurants.

Used this to make Skurka's "Beans & Rice with Fritos and Cheese." Worked great.

These beans are so perfect. Salted just the right amount (well maybe they salted a little too much, but at least it's lower than canned). Taste is good and there are nice chunks of beans in there. Here's my recipe: 1 cup water, 1 cup of the package, microwave 2 minutes, mix it around, microwave 1 more minute, mix it around, let stand for 5 minutes. Before starting the microwave, adding garlic powder or other spices will take it up a notch. Cost is just fair, I wish it were a little lower, but they still match canned beans in price.

I've been eating these for two years, splitting a case with a friend who lived alone. The first time I saw them was in his home, unopened. I was skeptical (I was born in Texas where re-fried beans are taken seriously, and my wife in California, where they are viewed about the same.) My wife is an excellent cook of Mexican dishes, and burritos or tostados are two of her staples. So when I brought home a pack two years ago she was skeptical also. The next time she made burritos was with these beans. She looked at me and said she would never go back to canned as long as these were available. You know the canned ones I'm speaking of. Those were the only brand we ever bought. The flavor of these, as well as the consistency is outstanding! Now I see they have black beans re fried. They sell a case of mixed packages that will be my next order. Easy to prepare, and if my 16 year old granddaughter is away from home (think hollow leg) we use whatever we need and fold the package back up and freeze them. The prices are great too! And 7 ounces of freeze dried beans makes a lot of finished product! Try them just once. You'll see. (Would a Texan lie about re fried beans???)
