Our vet prescribed this to us for our two cats when they were kittens. They had severe eye watering, upper respiratory infections, and were generally unwell. They had all of the symptoms of FHV. The bottle cost about $25 at the vet, but now we can sometimes buy it from Amazon for less (and sometimes not.) We still give it daily to our two cats as a preventative measure. They rarely have any symptoms with their eyes and have not had any more upper respiratory infections. They are now 3.5 years old and in all that time have only had about 3-4 occasions where their eyes looked swollen. We take care not to use any other irritants around them also, so this may help as well. Our cats don't mind it being on their food, as it is flavored to suit their tastes. This is the exact same container of Lysine powder that we would get from our vet. It always arrives intact and is always effective for our pets. There are other less expensive versions of this product available online. We have read other reviews from customers when we considered purchasing the less expensive, generic version, and many customers note that their cats still have issues once in a while. One container (100 gm) lasts our two cats (fed 1 scoop each 2x/day, (4 total scoops per day)) about 4 months. We have been so happy with this and believe that it is probably a more effective formula since our two cats - you would never guess that they needed this daily supplement. They are very healthy. We will be sticking with the Vetoquinol Viralys powder to make sure our cats stay in peak health. Highly recommend as a daily supplement for any cats, especially those with recurrent eye problems or URIs.

I work w/ my local VSA ( voluntary services for animals). I took in a few kittens that's eyes were almost completely shut with crust & their little noses were covered in crust & mucus. A pitiful site :( . I quickly took all 4 to the vet within 24 hrs. WELL, after they said it was "Feline herpes", (an upper respiratory infection that doesn't go away but can be controlled) IT ended up costing me close to $800!! With Vet costs, testing costs, & the "Wonderfully expensive" medication they gave me for Each cat, That helped some but not much!! They had liquid meds, meds that had to be put INTO their eyes like 4xs a day, & some other antibiotics. It was awful , & seriously it didn't help much at all. It lessened it some, but they needed the meds constantly! I looked on the Internet for any info I could find & found out about LYSINE !! I really thought it was a bunch of "bull" but was willing to TRY anything! I 1st bought a paste & a gel- the cats hated it. I then bought this powder. I mixed it into wet food ( not too much or they taste it!) & they ate it! After a week I noticed all their symptoms were really improving! I had STOPPED the Vets meds as the cost was killing me & not really helping them. After a MONTH all the cats were totally better, no crusty gooey eyes, no crusty nose, sneezing, ALL GONE!! I was amazed!! I studied it more, the use of L LYSINE & it's effects. It surpresses what makes the Herpes virus flare up in the system, so taking it on a Dailey basis means you won't get the flare up & the full blown symptoms! It also works in humans as well. I kept the kittens & have given them forms of LYSINE for 2 yrs now & they have NOT had another flare up since! If I stopped it for a few months, I noticed some sneezing & gunk in their eyes in the 1st year & quickly put them back on it! With 5 cats ( I had a 3 yr old when I took these in, she caught feline herpes from them as well!) it's kinda hard to make sure each one gets 250 - 500 mg Ea. When they eat out of each others bowls! So I just put a scoop into 1 3 oz can of wet, feed them 3 cans & it works great. I tried the TREATS, most cats don't care for them, also many brands you have to give each cat like 10 treats 1-2 x a day! Woa! Or another brand the treats were huge! Only 2 a day because they were the size of a golf ball! Lol. So, the cat powdered LYSINE works good, it's flavored mixes well in food & good to start on. I had no luck putting this on DRY food, I have heard many ppl do that but my cats wouldn't eat the food & most just fell to bottom of dish/bowl. I also bought & use HUMAN grade LYSINE 500 mg tablets & crush them up w/ a spoon & mix into wet food. This is VERY cost effective! It taste stronger than this flavored powder, so use a good wet food to mix with & you wont have a problem. My cats got use to it fast. You can also buy LYSINE powder in BULK on here, it's human grade & already finely crushed up. It works GREAT & cost MUCH less. Plus I like that it's "human" grade. I now can skip months at a time with no LYSINE & they still get no flare ups. This LYSINE is a God send! I recommend this powder if starting out, it's flavored and cats will take it well. But cost wise, the pills, tablets, capsule at your store or on here ( cheaper!) are strongest & the best I've found( crush up finely) . bitter, but cats really don't "taste" bitter I've heard. Either WAY or BRAND you choose it will all but cure your cats of the virus, you won't have huge vet bills & expensive meds that are worthless. 5 cats taking LYSINE on & off for 2 yrs and they have NO MORE SYMPTOMS & are very happy healthy spoiled kitty's... So please do yourself, your wallet, & your cats a favor & put them on a LYSINE regimen of 250 mg a day OR - 500 mg 1-2 x's a day for a flare up or to start off with. Once symptoms subside, you can stay with 250 mg a day to keep them away for good! Btw, In order to replicate & cause FLARE UPS , in humans & cats the herpes virus needs "ARGININE" another amino acid such as LYSINE . when LISINE is taken at higher doses, it prevents the amino acid ARGININE from over producing & hence preventing outbreaks of the herpes virus. So just check your pets FOODS, TREATS etc for any ARGININE ( L-ARGININE ) in them as this will ADD to your problem!! There ARE foods with this in the ingredient list I've found, so just FYI to be safe. Hope this helps someone with the problems I went through & learned from along the way!! :) Jenn ~

This really DOES work.. and it saved me $$ from going to the Vet.. Our oldest indoor cat had a sneezing spell.. I called our Vet .. (they sell this same product). She said to try this for a few days; if it worsens then make an appointment. I never had to make the appt. Bella is cured. The Feral cat we took in after it was hit by a car. She developed eye issues and since Feral cats don't socialize with humans I read all the reviews here and found that THIS PRODUCT cured her eye issues as well. It mixes well with can cat food. Ideally a first-aid item for your cats to have on hand..

This is a staple in our home. My cat was diagnosed with kitty herpes 2 hours after we rescued her. Vet gave us the paste version to add to her food. Worked great but glad I found this powder. It's much more bang for your buck. It mixes easily into wet food and has a fishy smell(and I'm sure taste, lol) that kitties like. We give both our cats one scoop(it comes with a scoop) with their bedtime feeding every night as a preventative measure. We up it to a scoop morning and night for a couple days if we feel one is sneezing more than normal. One cat kept randomly getting a sore on her chin. We found by upping her lysine to twice a day made it disappear with on a few days as opposed to weeks. We are happy to say they have never gotten a cold.

I highly recommend this for pets suffering a shelter sneeze and for cats who have been exposed to the herpes virus or have reoccurring uris. An unpleasant part of rescue is the constant exposure to uri. If I do a clean iso occasionally a sneeze still escapes and healthy vaccinated animals fight it off pretty easily, but this seems to help in a manner of different regards. I highly recommend Vetoquinol over almost any other brands and they also make other great stuff for kitties in need. If I bring in new fosters this makes it is super easy to mix into food properly for a multi cat household this goes a long way! Everyone doesn't mind the taste! Which is important. Don't skimp on money here and get this brand of lysine! They also make it loaded in a syringe, but the powder is great for getting it into everyone with little to no invasiveness!

I am writing this review after about one month of giving my cats Vetoquinol Viralys Powder daily, and it took about two weeks for their health to start improving. Shipping was on the slow side for Amazon, about a week and a half, but that was posted when I ordered. The Viralys in powder form is very easily *mixed* with wet food, given once daily. I have three cats, all indoor only and over 12 years old. One of the three cats (the one who I've only had a year, don't know her history) was having moderate to bad eye issues, having sneezing fits, and sometimes being even more lazy than usual. Since starting the Viralys her eyes are slowly but surely getting better, she is sneezing a lot less, and she has more energy, being more playful. Every day she seems to be getting healthier. One other cat had developed moderate eye issues recently that was starting to get worse and the Viralys has helped him a whole lot. The third cat isn't having any health issues, I still give her the supplement. I am very glad I learned about Viralys, and it will always be a part of my cats' diet from now on. It of course is not a replacement for veterinary care, but it is a great supplement that is helping my pets a lot. Update: I want to clarify, in order for my cats to eat it, it must be mixed in the wet food--keyword mixed. If it is only sprinkled on/in the food, without stirring, they won't eat it. They have been eating it for a couple months now and all of their health is doing well. Their eyes are better, the sneezing is dramatically reduced, and they have a little more energy than before using Viralys. A little bit went a long ways, the container lasted roughly 10-12 weeks for 3 cats. (Ordering a 2nd container now.) Update 2: Six months later, the cats are doing great. They still have the occasional sneezing or a little bit of sleepy eye, but it is significantly less that before adding Viralys to their diets. I still give it to them in their dinner, most days of the week.

I didn't think it was working but kept putting it into my cat's food twice a day, and then after about three weeks this stuff really kicked in and the brown gunk stopped coming out of her eye. She's been fine for a month now and I plan to keep giving her this as long as it keeps working. She likes the taste when it's mixed in with her food, so it's so much easier than trying to administer antibiotic eye drops. i only treated her twice with the drops before she had totally figured out my M.O. I couldn't even get her into a towel burrito to contain her paws, much less hold her little head steady to put in drops. Plus, while antibiotics can be life-saving, if I can use something else instead I'd much rather do so and save the antibiotics for truly dangerous situations where nothing else will work. Really glad this worked! If your situation's not an emergency, give it a month or so before you decide whether it's working; nutritional corrections sometimes take a little more time.

Our kitty is 17, and she has feline herpes that flairs from stress. Thankfully it isn't chronic, but when she's stressed, it's taken her to serious illness from being congested and not eating. I have bags and bags of lysine treats and bites and snacks that she has taken one look at, and snubbed. So when I opened this, and smelled it, I thought haha - no way. It's not a bad smell, but there is a particular odor to it that I thought would put her off. This is a cat that can hold liquid meds in her cheek and spew them back at you 4 minutes later. But this? We sprinkle it on her wet food, add a tablespoon of water or two to help her kidneys, mix it up until it looks like....cat-food-soup (I know - gag), and she is all over it. Truly amazing. And yes, I know - I'm telling you that we've finally found something we can get in her, but please know it has also helped her tremendously. She just had a tooth extracted, and while that went very well, she started sniffing and sneezing and having runny eyes and nose 2 days after. We give it to her every day, but when that started, we went with a scoop and a half in the morning and evening (a half scoop more at each dose) and she cleared up within two days without signs of loss of appetite or thirst. She is peppy, bossy, and according to our vet, in incredible shape for a 17 year old with early signs of kidney failure and lifelong feline herpes. She can now chase her tail without stopping to sneeze when she catches it. That's cat victory, is it not??

Amazing. I have been battling Feline Herpes in my adult cat's eye for over a year. He has been to the vet and prescribed steroid eyedrops and other special compounds to fight the symptoms. His eye is red and cloudy. I first attempted to switch him to a raw diet... but he is not having anything to do with that. He loves his canned food and dry food and does not like the raw at all...will not touch it. I read that adding lysine to his diet could benefit him and improve his symptoms. I am still using his prescription drops, but added this lysine to his food as well and the results have been unbelievable. His eyes are a bright sky blue and for the first time I am seeing the blue again in his eye, the cloudiness has improved and the redness is completely gone. I have only used a short time too. I am hopeful that he will be able to see just fine out of this eye in a few more weeks. This was well worth the $21.00. One prescription runs me $64.00 a month for his eye and did not make the difference this lysine did.

My young cat recently developed a weird cough/sneeze that was really severe. She was sneezing up a lot of thick mucous, and having trouble eating because of the mucous - it would make her vomit. Took her to the vet and they determined she has some kind of a virus (likely the feline herpes virus or something similar) bc this cough/sneeze/mucous keeps coming back right when she gets off of her antibiotics. But finally I added this lysine to her routine - adding it to her wet food 2x/day....and IMMEDIATELY her symptoms subsided. We were just about to start her on her 3rd round of a month long antibiotic treatment when we began with this -- and I called the vet the next day to cancel it because her symptoms had almost completely gone away. Within a week - the symptoms were completely gone. :) Just make sure you watch the dosage bc giving too much can cause diarrhea. We dealt with that too.
