I bought 2 of these as gifts for two children who just turned 1 year old. I had gotten my own child a magnetic board on her first birthday. But, they don't make that kind anymore. I loved the fact that the holes for the letters are the same shape as the letters (that's what I was looking for). And the letters are thick wood that will last. They are also raised a bit to be easy to pick up from the board. The bonus in this letter board is that it speaks to the child. It says the letter name and an object that has that letter sound. My friend and her sister (had their babies within same month) were both happy with their child's gift. If I need another one for someone else... I know where to get it! <3 When my kids were small, I would sit with them and take out one letter and say its name. Then they put it back and repeated the name. It was a game we played. Eventually, we took out 2, 3, etc. She knew her letters before going to school. Play with your child, it's more effective.

My daughter got this for her 3rd birthday. At that part she was starting to have some letter recognition, but still had a long way to go. The "talking" part allowed her to reinforce the sound-symbol association while playing alone, in addition to working on her fine motor/puzzle skills. She's pretty much mastered it, only a few months later, so I'd maybe recommend it for a slightly younger child to get a little more time out of it, but she still plays with it. I think this would make a great gift for a 2-3 year old!

My daughter loves his puzzle. She is turning two. The voice is clear but is a mans voice and isn't a soft voice, but this doesn't seem to bother her. We have not had a problem with it talking on its own as others have said and it saying the letter if she puts the wrong one in doesnt confuse her because the wrong letter doesnt fit. We just opened it today and started playing. She wants to do it over and over and is already saying the letters and what thy are for. You do need to add aaa batteries in. I do recommend this puzzle.

I bought this for my 3-year-old granddaughter. She loves puzzles! The voice when placing the letter in the correct position is a bit fuzzy in some of the letters, but the concept is great. She can sit and learn all by herself. But it is fun to sit with her as she repeats the puzzle sounds. The purpose is only for letter recognition. The letter sound is not given. Two AAA batteries are needed for the sound to work. These will have to be purchased separately.

I bought this puzzle for my 3 year niece and she loved it. We just dumped the pieces out and she was able to place them according to their shape. I am not sure she was really paying attention to the letters, but she was having fun with matching shapes and colors. The voice is clear and easy to understand. The board speaks out "A is for apple" once the puzzle piece is properly placed. It is activated by light and dark, activates when covered. Almost any child could enjoy this even if they are not too familiar with their alphabet yet.

How can you go wrong with a Melissa and Doug puzzle? They are so well-made, colorful and sturdy. My little grandson that loves puzzles was the recipient of this puzzle and loved learning the alphabet with it. I purchased another for another grandson and he loved it too. They were able to recognize the letters quickly and associate them with the pictures underneath as the puzzle "rewards" them by saying the letter and what it stands for if they put it in the right place. They learn dexterity, shape recognition, sounds and have fun doing it. Excellent teaching tool on many levels.

This puzzle is AMAZING! I was worried because the letters sre smaller and I thought it would be too much for my 20 month old. The color of the actual letters does not match the color of the same letter on the board! This makes it to where they have to match the letter, and not just a color or design! We got it in the mail and she took right to it! She loves playing with this puzzle! She could do the entire thing and doesn't get bored with it! Since it does have so many pieces, we put it up and let her ask for it. It's very easy to lose a piece, especially if you were to just leave it out! I would definitely recommend this product, and we can not wait to order the numbers puzzle!

This puzzle is so perfect for teaching kids the alphabet! I have used it with a particular student who is learning disabled. She loves doing the puzzle! She cannot write so this is such a good learning tool for her! At least she attempts to learn the letters. I love the fact that once the puzzle pieces are out of the puzzle, she has to actually touch the pieces. Then it becomes a tactile experience. I haven't put the batteries in yet. I imagine that once I do, it will only add to the learning experience for her!

Best teaching puzzles among similar items. Kids in my daycare love them. Durable.

This was the best purchase ever! My two year old son now knows his ABCs' . After a week of playing with this he can recognize a lot of letters. I read complaints about it saying the wrong letter when you put in different place. I just sat down and worked it with my child the first time. When he tried to put the Q in the O place, I just said " see it doesn't fit ,the puzzle says this is the O spot and you have the Q." Then I point out the difference in all the ones he was trying to put in wrong places. Can't complain for the price. My child was helping an older kid work it the other day. She would ask where does this go? And my son said "B ball." My mom asked him if he wanted a jelly bean yesterday and he said "J" . I'm one proud mom and suggest anyone with a child should buy this.
