Perfect for Upper Grade School
Perfect for my 5th grader to learn placement of the States and Capitals. I especially like that there is no gridline placement board, so the kids have to learn the shapes of the states and where they go on their own. That might make it more difficult for younger children (under 6ish). Each piece has the State capital--my only wish is that the capital was written on the underside so the kids could test themselves. I'm hoping this helps my daughter ace her upcoming test!

Good, but could be better
I enjoy having my children learn about the USA and we’ve got family in various parts of the country so we’ve traveled a bit for visits. I thought this would be nice for my preschooler to use to visualize where we’ve been. My 3.5 yr old can put this puzzle together on her own fairly well, but we do a lot of puzzles in our house. We’ve put it together 6-8 times now, and here is what I’ve noticed... 1. It is a little tough in that the pieces don’t link like a normal jigsaw because they’re shaped like the various states. Essentially they just are flat sides that lay next to each other. Because of this, the pieces can shift around with a wiggly child and that can make it tough getting everything to fit smoothly if your child is impatient. 2. The pieces are a cardboard material, like most puzzles. They’re thick enough to be pretty sturdy but because some of the pieces are so long or large I foresee some of these getting bent, particularly with smaller children. I know my daughter held one piece in her hand and pushed it into the couch while leaning on the couch and bent one. Still usable, but not perfect now. 3. The size of the pieces and pictures are nice for any age to work with. The areas with smaller states all bunched together are one puzzle piece so you’re not trying to finagle a tiny piece in somewhere. 4. The colors and pictures are holding up well so far, but I did notice one piece on the red sign that seems to have some specs of color coming off. See my picture. 5. I like that they have a picture of something significant related to that state for most states - a talking point I can have with my child about various items. This picture also gives my child, who cannot read yet, some way of identifying the states without looking at the name. However, note that not all states have a picture. Where the state is too small, they’ve omitted a picture. This is understandable based on space, but a bit disappointing for me because I lose that teaching moment for some states. Overall, not a big deal. 6. Being from Michigan, I’m frustrated on what MI looks like. That’s not a mitten! The other states mostly look pretty accurate to their shapes. See some of my pictures for a good view. Overall this is another quality Melissa and Doug product, but is it perfect? No. I’m glad I purchased this, and the kids seem to enjoy it which is what really matters.

My son has tried over a dozen USA Map puzzles this year. This is the best BY FAR!
My 4 1/2 year old son LOVES United States maps, puzzles, and especially US map puzzles! We have at least a dozen different US Map puzzles, everything from wooden blocks to magnetic pieces to traditional jigsaw puzzles to bathtub puzzles, and he has never found a US map puzzle he didn’t like over the 6 months or so since this became one of his interests. However, some puzzles have stood the test of time but most could not endure my enthusiastic 4 year old’s way of playing for very long and most ended up falling apart or becoming otherwise ununusable after just a couple weeks or even days. So with all this in mind I am always on the lookout for THE USA map puzzle, the one that will be challenging enough to hold the interest of my son while not being so overly complicated that it overwhelms him (he has Autism so finding a toy that can work with both his incredible intelligence and his sensory/attention span type struggles is an art of its own!), and while I’ve been delighted with how much he’s enjoyed every puzzle we’ve had so far, none were the perfect fit for him... I’d sort of accepted as I often do, that there just wasn’t one that would be the perfect fit for him, and was just happy he was enjoying USA puzzles since there are so many out there and it’s something I could actually just keep buying him a new one each week (as opposed to most of his interests, ie his all time favorite thing to do is completely taking apart household appliances... so when he started loving these types of puzzles, it was a blessing!) Anyway, this was maybe the 15th USA puzzle I gave him over this 6 month or so period. It’s also the last one I’ve had to give him. I gave it to him 3 weeks ago. And it is such an incredibly well designed puzzle that it has not only been able to EASILY withstand his very very enthusiastic (think rough) play for hours a day, but has also been able to keep him interested in it enough that 3 weeks later, he is still coming back to this puzzle and playing it several times a day every day!!! I don’t think I could properly explain how big of a deal this is for my son without writing a novel so let me just say this... if you’re looking to buy a USA Map puzzle for a child, any child, age 3-6, get this one. Trust me. It’s perfect! A quick overview of what makes it the best USA puzzle I’ve ever seen: +DURABILITY: This puzzle is made of pieces that my son has bitten, thrown multiple times, stomped on.... each piece looks brand new still. +SIZE: It’s a floor puzzle so the pieces are nice and large but it’s not an overwhelmingly huge puzzle. It can be completed on an average size table just as well as a floor. The size of this thing is just perfect. +DESIGN: The way this puzzle is formatted is brilliant. Most states are individual states with just a few clusters of multiple states with the end product being a US map puzzle that neither has tiny pieces for those small New England states; nor is it a puzzle where almost every state is grouped on a piece with at least one other state. After going through about 15 other USA puzzles this is the first and only one I’ve seen that managed to pull this part off perfectly. Additionally, there is excellent added interest from the way this was set up with the boarder being a traditional jigsaw puzzle but the middle (comprising of the mainland 48 states) do not interlock, as they simply don’t need to, the interlocking boarder keeps the states in place once the middle of the puzzle is started. It’s hard to explain how brilliant this part is without seeing it for yourself, but it’s a wonderful unique feature to this puzzle that increases the challenge in a fun but entirely non frustrating way... seriously this thing is amazing!!! Bottom line, I’m just a regular mom, not affiliated with the Melissa and Doug people, not someone who’s ever been given a discount for a review or anything like that! Just a regular unbiased customer who is thrilled beyond words to have found the perfect USA Map puzzle for my son and would without any hesitation urge any parent/anyone looking for a map puzzle like this for any child near the Pre-K age range or so (though I honestly think any child that’s interested in US geography would LOVE this puzzle, could see this working for kids much older than my son!) to get this puzzle. I’ve seen so many of the different ones out there and there have been some very good ones, some pretty awful ones and a lot in the middle but this one is exceptional in its design and I can say without any hesitation that its the best USA Map puzzle for kids on the market, by far, and I can not recommend it strongly enough!

Extremely Well Made!
This is a great puzzle. The pieces are very strong. They do not fit together, they fit side by side so you don’t have to worry about the tabs breaking. The colors and printing is vivid and clear. I bought one years ago when my grandson was three. We had such fun and I was so amazed how this little guy could put it together. He memorized where all the states went. That was 10 years ago and the puzzle is gone. Now I have a new grandson and just bought this one for him. There is nothing not to love with this puzzle. It’s an excellent buy and thoughtful gift.

Great learning tool
I bought this puzzle to give a family of kids for a XMAs present. I had one as a kid, and LOVED it. It taught me all about the states and the capitals, and is a wonderful learning tool. I think the kids will love it, and they can sit around together and work on it together--a real family treat.

Fun AND educational!
I bought this for my granddaughters for Christmas. Pre-K and first grade, the pieces were perfectly sized for their little fingers and the layout was such that they learned a couple of facts about each state as they put the puzzle together! Fun AND educational...this Mimi was pleased and would definitely buy again.

Great puzzle to use while learning the States and Capitals
I bought this puzzle along with a smaller board puzzle, this was the most helpful for my 10 yr old. He has to know the states and capitals for Core Curriculum testing in 5th grade. He liked this puzzle because the pieces stayed together once attached. I liked it because it was easy for him to take sections of the puzzle, like they are presented in school, and study just that section of the US (NW, SW, Central, SE etc...) The pieces are colorful, large and sturdy, making this something that can be used over and over and passed down through the family to younger children. Sharing my opinion, perspective and actual experience with products I use in my everyday life provides me personal satisfaction knowing that the information I share assists other consumers in making informed purchasing decisions. I purchased this on Amazon for full price to use as a study aid for my child.

pretty much a state on each
It is as colorfully bright as on the website. The pieces are kind of big; pretty much a state on each. My age 6 grandson put it together by himself within 30 minutes. Then I had him match the state quarters with the states.

Cool puzzle
This puzzle is better than I thought it would be. My 4 year old loves puzzles and has been interested in learning about maps and finding where we live so I thought this would be good for her. I didn't realize the pieces are actually in the shape of each state! The little pictures on the states are a nice touch and helps her figure out where they go by looking at the picture on the box. Much cooler than our other more simple floor puzzles.
