Love them, but beware, they have a very short shelf life
These were always a "Sunday treat" when I was a kid, or rather slices of a full sized Battenberg were. The Battenberg cake is another one of those quintessentially British food items, being a pink and yellow sponge cake made up of 4 alternate colored squares held together with a thin sweet glue of apricot jam and then covered with a layer of rich marzipan. These cakes are truly delicious but they do have a relatively short shelf-life so eat 'em up quickly! For those who may be unfamiliar with the chequered history of this product, this confection was originally designed in secret in an attempt to assassinate the Baron von Battenberg who, despite his jovial appearance in photographs, was quite a nasty piece of work intent on destabilizing late Victorian Europe. Robert Welles and Agnes Bertha Marshall, both in the employ of The Covert Culinary Operatives (a little-known forerunner of the now defunct British intelligence agency E110) were passed information that the Baron had an "unhealthy addiction to nuts, especially almonds", which they combined with the poorly kept secret that he was a diabetic, into a cunning plan, codenamed "Sunset Yellow" . Through 1898, working independently so as to avoid suspicion, they perfected a highly sugared cake covered with rich almond paste that they knew he would be unable to resist. The culmination of their secretive baking was the Battenberg, a combination of Welles' "Neapolitan Roll" and Marshall's "Domino Cake" When presented with this delicacy at the opening festival of "Der große und wichtige Tanz der Esel" in 1899, the Count was immediately hooked. However, due to his large stature and exceptionally strong constitution, even the huge amount of sugar contained in the Battenberg cake had little effect on him and he survived totally unscathed. Alas, the same cannot be said for at least two, more slightly built, members of his entourage who went into immediate hyperglycemic shock which, untreated, led to ketoacidosis resulting in their untimely demise. The resulting political outrage fueled resentment within the German aristocracy for years, including an understandable ban on almond paste importation, and immediate frosting of diplomatic relations between Britain and Germany. The rest, as they say, is history....

Divine!
I have always wanted to try Battenberg cake, and figured that these would be a good way to sample one without spending a lot. They arrived 8 days before Amazon's estimated delivery date of October 26, with about two weeks left before their sell by date (Nov 2). The box was well packed, and the mini cakes were unharmed. They tasted pretty good too, a sweet almond flavor. I will definitely be ordering these again!

THANK YOU MR. KIPLING!
I had ordered the larger Battenberg cake in the past and loved it! So rich and that almond flavor to die for! So I decided to order the smaller cakes this time to keep on hand. They are so sweet that one really only needs a few cut pieces of even these petite ones. I love to have them with tea for an afternoon treat. They are so pretty for company, cut and arranged on a fancy dish!

Kryptonite, much?
Battenberg: checkered spongecake with an apricot glaze that's covered in marzipan. Sounds simple, yet somehow it's a perfectly composed masterpiece of a sweet treat. I don't even really like spongecake, apricot, or marzipan, but put together it's what I think (and hope) manna from heaven will taste like. I may or may not have been known to eat an entire box in one sitting. It's sweet, rich, dense, flavorful, and just lovely with strong tea. I haven't ordered these recently because my parents have made it a point to always get me some for the holidays now. The first time they did they were mortified that the date on the box implied that they had expired. However: remember that the date is a sell by date, and not an eat by date. So don't worry - you're good to enjoy these for much longer than you think. If you can actually wait that long to break into the box, that is.

Ah-Mazing.
I have never had these before. One night I got tipsy on some wine and did some drinking and priming. Weeks later I received multiple packages with random British treats inside. Why hasn't America adopted this cake as their own like they do with everything else? This confection was probably the most delectable piece of sugar to every cross my lips. I am hooked. I'm fairly certain this contains crack cocaine because I have not stopped thinking about it. Do yourself a favor and just buy this.

Absoluely delish!
These are beyond delicious and probably my favorite treat from England. I was raised in Great Britain and eat these growing up and just recently started ordering on Amazon as I am now living in the States. I love these and when they are fresh they are mouthwatering! Please order and see for yourself and try to order the Battenberg cake if available. Very sweet and rich so you do not need to eat a lot unless of course like me you are a pig.

Very unique
These are super tasty little snacks. They are very very sweet!!! The inside is a soft cake with apricot jam and the outside is a thin fondant like almond wrap with a crunchy sugar dusting. I first saw these on the Great British Baking show and was curious try to them. Glad I did!

Close to expiration date but not expired, still very delicious
These were within about 20 days of the expiration date when I received them, but they didn't taste old or bad in any way whatsoever. They're just as delicious as I remember. They seemed to be a bit stickier perhaps because of their size? I'm used to the larger version. I had intended to share them with friends who've never tried them... until I ate one.. then my friend's sorta became out of luck in a hurry. : ) The cakes are very much smaller than I thought they'd be, but I suppose that's my fault for not looking at the specific measurements. The individual cakes are approximately 1"x1"x3". A good 3 bites for an average adult male.

So yummy
They're so small you're disappointed at first. But these are little rectangles of heaven.. I taste marzipan, which I love, and the rest is spongey sweetness.. one goes a long way, so well worth the $7 or so for a pack of 5.

Wonderful, but teensy
Supposing that I skip dinging a point off because they are very much on the small-side, the flavour is terrific, the texture(s) are wonderful... the marzipan does seem a bit heavy or overdone considering the size of the cakes, making the frosting seem overpowered. The jam is terrific, and the cake itself is lovely. I can't stress enough how much I wish these were at least a tad larger.
