I ordered this as a birthday present to myself because I was tired of using the backs of chairs. I used it for the first time last night. It couldn't be easier to set up and use...tighten 2 wooden screws and adjust the spines to fit your yarn. That's it! Worked great! No squeaks.
In combination with my ball winder I am enjoying having all of my yarn available in center pull balls. No more chasing my yarn balls across the living room.
I love this swift because it will fit on any of my tables - my knit picks swift lasted several years but I could not use it on most tables. This swift is also sturdier and although same style I think is of better quality
This swift if exceptionally well-made, especially for the price. No rough edges, it doesn't scratch up my table top when I affix it to the edge, and the swivel is consistent and smooth. This is definitely a great deal for the money and has already helped spin up several dozen skeins into consistent cakes. I would recommend this for knitters of all experience level and frequency...it's a massively helpful tool that's very easy to set-up and use.
I am part owner of a yarn shop where I have access to a swift any time I want. But I really prefer to have one at home in case I want to wind yarn at a strange hour when the shop is closed. I did a good deal of research and came to the conclusion that the Stanwood was great quality and well priced. My research paid off. Excellent swift that I am sure will give me years of service.
Wound some VERY slippery yarn using this swift. Used a toilet paper cardboard for the center as the yarn was too slippery to hold it's shape without a support.
Fantastic. Wood knobs can be difficult to raise up and down, but it is well worth it if you will be spinning lots of yarn. I believe I purchased the large version of this - not sure if I needed to specify. This holds tension well - which helps to vary ball being wound to desired tightness. I use it with the Stanwood Needlecraft. They work very well together to produce excellently formed balls of yarn.
I have used it a lot, I had a multiple hanks of yarn to wind. My old swift (a wheel model) wasn't wide enough and the yarn was getting tangled. It's really nice to have one that truly accommodates multiple hank sizes.
I purchased a ball winder and didn't realize that I also needed a swift. I looked at a variety (there are several different styles to choose from), but this type seemed to be the best for different size hanks of yarn. It works very well...I hook/clamp it onto a sturdy wood TV tray table (the type that folds up) and clamp my ball winder next to it. Although this umbrella swift is able to handle large hanks of yarn, it is not overly heavy and unwinds the hank very smoothly so that my ball winder can wind the yarn into a neat ball. This swift is fairly sturdy and easy to use, but I recommend keeping the box it comes in to store and protect it. Throwing it into a closet or putting heavy items on it could break the wooden slats.
