This fountain is fantastic. I know how superfluous this sounds but it's the best thing I've purchased for my cats to date. First of all, on other websites, the price point is as much as $70. It's easy to assemble, easy to clean (which you should do every week), and the cats love it. I've had the drinkwell fountain for about a month and my kitten still will spend an hour playing in the water or just watching the stream of water come out (see pictures). I am always looking for something to entertain my indoor cats and keep them stimulated and this does a good job. It's also great for my older cats because they are teetering on the edge of hyperthyroidism and kidney disease and one of the most important things an owner can do is to keep their older cats hydrated. If you have a fluffy or bigger cat though, they might not like it because it's hard to get their head to the actual reservoir/pool without their head or ears getting wet. If your cats play in it like mine do, I would suggest cleaning it more than once/week. I use filtered water, which I'm assuming is easier on the filter and will help it last longer. Helpful tip: While it's not very pretty, I keep a potty pad under the fountain for when the cats splash water out. I'm actually going to be purchasing a few more for Christmas presents for the pet lovers in my life! Wish I had bought my sooner!

My own fault it stopped working, Petsafe chat support had it going in 10 min
Ok new update, got a walkthough on the correct way to clean the pump and lube the white portion of the impeller with olive oil which I had not done although I had taken it all apart to clean it. Note to anyone who has to eat crow after giving it a bad review like me... the unit and the charcoal can go a bit without cleaning/maintenance although you SHOULD clean it every week. The pump itself has plastic housings on both ends, the end where the cord goes in you don't worry about, the other end you run a thumbnail or a butterknife or whatever into the gap between the front plate and the housing and it'll pop off. Then the little cover pulls off and the impeller comes out. Clean out the shaft area with the kit you can buy or just a q tip worked for me and then blasted it all out with water from the kitchen sprayer. Washed off the cover and the impeller and then dried impeller and lubed up the white part with olive oil. I'm sure any oil in the pantry would work tho. Put it back together and boom, works like new so the impeller in these things can jam. I mean it probably would be much better design for these pumps to have the impellers riding on a bushing of some sort or (even better) ball bearings but this is a cheap chinese pump and it really does look like it'll last a long time with weekly cleanings done PROPERLY (looks in mirror). You can't just expect it to run and filter debris and dirt or whatever and need zero maintenance.. Like ppl leaving reviews on vacuums saying the suction died after a month and its because they never took it apart and cleaned out the filters/brush etc... Also can't say enough bout Petsafe, they didn't even ask for proof I had bought the unit and walked me through the whole correct cleaning process. Rep was with me in chat within 15 seconds of clicking on "open chat" on the website. Will be doing weekly cleanings routinely now because this is honestly the first water solution for my cats that hasn't resulted in gross water 10 minutes after re-filling it (one cat likes to put feet in water sometimes) or splashing all over the place from knocked over bowls.

Got my cats drinking more and stopped them drinking from dripping faucet
I bought this fountain because we have 7 cats and I noticed that a couple of them were not drinking very much water. In addition, I noticed that one of the cats seemed to like drinking from a dripping faucet and another one would sometimes drink from the toilet bowl (yuck!). Initially, it can be slightly tricky assembling the unit, especially locating the fountain tower on the main bowl to align with the pump. However, once you know what you are doing, it is no problem at all. It just takes a bit of getting used to. The unit holds a lot of water. I also put ice cubes in the main bowl during the summer, which the cats love. This has been a successful purchase. The cats love it (and so do the dogs, which is a pain as you have to keep filling it up). It has stopped my cat from drinking from the dripping faucet and the other one from occasionally drinking from the toilet bowl. Also, the 2 cats that were not drinking so much water have definitely started drinking more. one has become quite enthusiastic about drinking from the top of the fountain. We have had this fountain for about 3 years now. In terms of sturdiness it has stood the test of time. We live in a hard water area and I found that it was a bit difficult to get the calcification off the bowl - I had to really scrub. This was probably my own fault as I didn't always run the unit with the filters. Now I always use the recommended filters and filtered water, which means it takes more time to fill the unit with water (as I have to wait for the water to filter. Having said that the water quality is probably better for the cats). Over time the grey / white color has gone more grey / yellow in parts. However the pump is still running strong. I had to reorder a pump Petmate Fresh Flow 120 V Replacement Pump, Black because one of the cats or dogs had chewed through the cable, so take care on how you place the fountain in the room! Now I just need to find a similar product for our 2 pot bellied pigs...

Best thing ever for your pets, and for you
Mine is review #7,922 for the Drinkwell Platinum. And I along with so many others like this fountain for our pets, and consider it a terrific benefit for our animal friends. And it's seriously not a big deal to disassemble the thing, clean and re-assemble. This is one of the best things I've brought into my life, and the lives of my cats. For me it's peace of mind. My 2 cats have an oasis they can't knock over while wrestling and chasing each other. While they can spill some water out washing their paws - and they do wash and spill some - they can't spill all the water out. The tank is a good size so I can fill it up, let it gurgle and fill the reservoir, and fill the tank back up, and I get to do a long 3 night weekend without a care, and they still have plenty of water left when I get home. It makes a little noise when the water is low so if I don't pay attention it tells me. Otherwise the thing is pretty quiet until a cat drinks from it. My cats get carried away, do a little splish splash, and *really* enjoy their fountain. I saw the pictures and thought will my cats take to this thing? One is not friendly to anything new. I bought a bolster mat and 3 years later he still wouldn't go near it (then one day...). The little one knows no fear, and curiosity and a sense of fun rules her personality. So I knew she'd take to it fairly soon. But I think it was the orange guy who took to it first. It might have been day 3, or 4 when I heard water noise and peeked around the corner to see him drinking from it standing up, licking the fountain of water as it spilled out of the top - like a pro. I saw that in the pictures of this thing, but didn't imagine my cats would drink standing up. They both do. They sometimes drink from the pool, but I think that's mostly for paw washing. I bought the brushes, and extra filters. Good ad-on items. Glad I have those. Cleaning really isn't a big deal. Do the mild soapy water thing, and get the grunge off everything. Open up the motor and clean out the spinner. It's good to go. Best thing ever. I'm super happy to have it. The cats lives are better for it (over a bowl). What's not to love here? I recommend it 100% !!!

No more urinary tract infections!
I have two of these now so I can put a fresh one down each week while I clean and disinfect the other one. It's just easier for me that way. Since my three cats no longer have to go to the vet with urinary tract infections because they love their fountain and drink lots of fresh water, I can afford to buy two of these fountains with the money I've saved not going to the vet! Not one urinary infection in almost a year since I got the first fountain! And before that I had three male cats with bloody urine and constant trips to vet. None of the meds seemed to work for more than a couple of weeks. I also have them on IAMS Urinary Tract Health dry food which is less expensive than the Royal Canin and Hills from the vet. The "magic" ingredient is DL-Methionine which is in the IAMS as well as the prescription cat food. They also get canned food in addition to the IAMS dry food. It all seems to work just fine. Cats are healthy and happy! Just be prepared to thoroughly clean this fountain weekly and don't let it get slimy. Also change the filters monthly as recommended.

Mine's been working fine for 11 years
I've had my Petsafe Drinkwell system for 11 yrs now (bought originally in 2007 from Amazon) and it's still running well. I did do one modification, and that was to rig up one of those infrared switches that you put in light switches to turn on the overhead light when someone enters a room. That way the pump doesn't turn on except when the cat trips the 'beam' which, I assume, lengthens the life of the pump. The box with the sensor is near her food bowl, so after a few seconds, the pump starts pumping the water, and if she leaves the bowl area, the pump turns off after a few minutes. Anyway, other than routine maintenance/cleaning, it runs great and I would definitely buy it again (and add the same modification). I also added a simple table light in the same circuit so that the light turns on when Puss goes to get a midnight drink. Dang cats...gotta love 'em.

My Pets Love This!
I looked and compared and went back and forth trying to decide which fountain to buy. There just seemed to be so many factors to consider. Well I (and my pets) couldn't be happier with this choice. I bought it primarily for my diabetic 10 year old cat who has had 3 recurrent, painful bouts of cystitis. Animals drink more water if it's fresh and oxygenated so I hoped this would help. I have another cat that I knew would play in it, climb on it, and knock it over if possible. So weight was a consideration, as was flow so it would be like the sink stream. My 3 cats and small dog all love it and are drinking much more than they had been. My daughter's puppy stays with me during the day sometimes and the first thing he does is run to the fountain when he comes in the door. The cat that demanded the sink be turned on no longer does that and enjoys playing in the water stream in the fountain. The steam is adjustable and I turned it to the lowest setting to simulate the sink. I read that others felt it was hard to clean. I bought a cheap bottle brush at Walmart and I cleaned it for the first time today and it took about 5 minutes. The pre-filter really helps with fur and dirt not getting to the motor. The fountain is almost silent when running. The motor has suction cups on the bottom so it doesn't move and vibrate. The water stream falls on a piece made to prevent it falling directly onto the water in the bowl so there is no sound from that. There is almost no scum buildup as there is in a regular bowl. Finally, I considered weight because I knew one cat would climb on it and it is heavy and stable enough to prevent tipping, especially with a full tank. The clear reservoir tank in the back allows easy monitoring of the water level. This model holds a lot of water, way more than I thought we would possibly need. I was wrong. They love it so much that they drink more than I expected. I would recommend this to everyone.

Great! Even if you have a derpy cat
This is by far my favorite water bowl fountain. All my cats loved that the water was moving, and that water fell down like that (except my one derpy cat that doesn't understand, she drinks from the back side of the bowl and let's the fountain touch her head it gets water everywhere). I put a small tray underneath to help with my derp cat. All the others love it and don't get water everywhere lol. It holds so much water and it has a filter system. It's nice not having to refill frequently. I clean it pretty often (because derpy wants to make sure her toy squirrel isn't thirsty) but the filter does help with most of the dirt that she gets in there. Which is better than some of the others I've used. Just like any thing that holds water it does need to be cleaned. I pull everything apart to wipe it down, including the pump. It's probably a 10-15 minute process and is very easy.

Demon fountain
This water fountain at my home is known as the Demon Fountain, here's the back story... When I first unpackaged the fountain I plugged it in without any water in it, which made a loud grinding noise from the small motor in it, that terrified my cat. I unplugged it after a second or two and properly filled it with water but the damage had been done. My cat was now terrified of this harmless fountain. He refused to go near it, he would actually walk wide of the fountain and watch it the entire time. He would angle his body while eating to be able to watch the fountain. If you tried to put him near the fountain he would cry and claw at the floor to try and get away from it. I was very disappointed as I thought I would have to put the fountain away for a few months to try to reintroduce it to him later on. Weeks went by and my cat remained terrified of it. I had finally given up and was ready to remove the fountain. One morning I came downstairs and my cat was sitting in front of it drinking from the flowing water. The whole point of purchasing this was to break him from his habit of whining to go into the kitchen and bathroom sinks. He loved having the sink turned on a low flow and letting it drip on his head. Now he drinks from his Demon Fountain regularly, he no longer his a normal water dish, he routinely will be found running throughout the house with a water Mohawk from letting the fountain drip on his head. He's a weird boy. Anyways, that's the story of the Demon Fountain. He now loves it and I would recommend it to any other pet owner, just be sure to fill it with water prior to plugging it in though.

With Careful care this fountain WILL last and works great. See photos.
We bought this fountain in November 2011. Now, almost 2 years later, we still have no trouble, like some reviewers have had. I believe the key to this success is the cleaning of the fountain AND the pump. Once per week we disassemble the ENTIRE fountain. All components get cleaned with a mild liquid dish soap and warm water. What's key here is the full dis-assembly. Note in the photos section I have shown the fountain taken apart. You will see that one piece came OFF of the front of the pump. This allows us to clean the gunk that gets built up inside the fountain. This is very easy. Of course, the pump should be unplugged prior to cleaning. Then remove the front, and place pump in a cup of warm water with a tsp of powder dish detergent. While submerged, we plug the pump in. This circulates the water and detergent to clean the spinning mechanism inside. See in another photo the debris floating in the water. That is the gunk that builds up. So if you are experiencing pump failure, this may be the reason. If your pump is so bad the spinning mechanism does not spin, simply soak the pump in the water and detergent for a couple of hours, then flush well with clean water and try again. IMPORTANT: When you put the front cover back onto the pump, if it does not close all the way, do NOT force it. The flow control valve MUST line up. So turn your flow control slightly and try again. Continue to make slight turns and try again until it snaps EASILY back together. When done regularly, this weekly cleaning does not take us much time at all and is completely worth the effort. Other than this cleaning, our fountain has required no maintenance. We change the filter one or twice per month, as needed. After cleaning, we fill the base with water AND fill the reservoir. It is enough water to last well over that week. This fountain gets daily use by two cats, so you may through more water with dogs or more cats. I hope this review will help you love your Pet Fountain!
