Great once I figured out which direction to insert the cherry
I found that if I put the cherry stem-side out then I was only getting the pit out about half the time. However, by switching it to stem-side in (facing toward the hinge) the pit comes out the first time 80-90% of the time. Once I figured that out it was smooth sailing, and now I don't have to worry about my kid choking on a cherry pit or waste a bunch of times cutting them in half.

This works well with GREEN OLIVES!!
I was really, really worried if this pitter would work with Castelvetrano olives (Ficacci). There is only one customer question about this and nobody knowing the olives replied... This review is for people like me who want to use this item as an *olive* pitter. It requires a little bit of strong grip when the olive is firm, but it still works well. The picture is the outcome and you can see some pits came out with fleshes. I think it would be much easier with soft black olives. For scale, the olive pick (upper part of the picture) is similar to common toothpicks. I hope this review will be helpful to olive lovers.

Works well, but splatters! Do not use near fabrics or materials that could stain.
My kids love cherries, but are too little to have the whole cherry. So, I had been painstakingly halving cherries, carving out the pits and quartering the cherries. I'm a busy mom and have better things to do with my time! :) I decided to try this, even though it was larger than some of the other cherry pitters on the market. I found it was easiest to clean a bowl of cherries, pull off all stems and just keep working through the bowl taking the pits out one by one. You have to squeeze a bit to get them to come out, but it sure beats the carving method! I ended up with one cherry that did not get de-pitted. So, just beware... you'll want to check to make sure you're getting pit out every time. Also, this item splatters quite a bit when the pits are punched out. Definitely do not use this around white clothes, tablecloths or any surfaces that may be stained by cherry juice. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Great little kitchen tool
I really like this little gadget. I made several batches of true maraschino cherries using this pitter when I first got it, as well as my yearly batch of "merry berry sauce" just recently. It continues to function well and be resilient against breakage despite being dropped several times by a very clumsy not-chef (me) and I really like the dishwasher-safe aspect as I do not enjoy hand-washing dishes. (Who does?!) For the price it can't be beaten, and I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of it. I do find it helpful to use a deep bowl and wear an old shirt - no matter how intricate and expensive your cherry pitter is, squeezing big batches of fruit is a juicy job and there's bound to be a rogue or two!

Gets my kids to eat another fruit (they eat them off thier fingers like olives or raspberries now)!
I'm not a fan of most specialty tools that only do one thing, since usually you can generally do it almost as easily with other kitchen equipment, but I don't think there is really a substitute for this. It only takes a few seconds to de-pit a handful of cherries to put on my kids plate as a side for a meal, and without it the best way to make them safe without the pit choking hazard was to try to split the cherry with my thumbnails which is just a mess and squished out most of the juice. This tool makes it easy to get your kids to eat another fruit when it is in season, and is cheap enough to try out with little risk if the kids end up not liking cherries. I paid for this product and wasn't compensated in any way for this review. If you found this review helpful, please click on the helpful button below. Thanks!

Perfect For Hands Which Have Hard Time Gripping
Okay, OXO did it again! First of all a little caveat. I'm a retired chef who teaches culinary arts to high school level students at a Technical Skills Center. Second, I have a wife who has severe rheumatoid arthritis. I bought this primarily for her but know if/when needed, I'm taking this to work because it is so comfortable to use. I have been a converted OXO user for many years now. Many of the smaller tools in my life bag are OXO brand. I've also stocked several restaurants I have had a hand in opening with OXO tools, they work as advertised!

Priceless tool for those who like cherries!
I recently purchased 10 lbs. of bing cherries to soak in bourbon. This tool was absolutely priceless and helped me work through all 10 lbs. in one afternoon. I did not rush too much, but it would have taken multiple days without a tool like this. The quality is great, and it is well engineered. The hole in the cherry was not significant enough to make me feel like i was losing too much cherry. My hand was not sore at the end of the 10 lbs. I highly recommend this to anyone working with cherries in any amount.

This is a wonderful gadget!
I pitted about 5 lbs of cherries so quickly and effortlessly with this pitter that I am still a bit in awe of how well it works. I was worried that it would make the cherries misshapen, but it doesn't squish them at all. It just pushes the pit through the center and out the bottom or top (however you place them) without touching the rest of the fruit. The splatter guard works beautifully and makes the process much neater, with zero clean up. Very little effort is needed to pit the cherries, so if you have arthritis or other hand / muscle concerns, know that it's doesn't take a lot of pressure or the total closing of your hand into a fist to make it work. It's very easy to clean, and the lock to close it makes it easy to store and to get out of a drawer (it doesn't get caught on things as it would if it were stored in its open setting). One thing that I did note was that a couple of the cherries (literally two out of scores) still had the pit in, but if you are paying even a little bit of attention, you can tell that the pit didn't fall out and can easily pull it out with the center part that is still hanging off the bottom of the cherry. I haven't tried this on olives (and probably won't), so I can't speak to how well it works on those, but it definitely won't work for anything bigger than a cherry. I had to squeeze in a couple of extra large cherries, so its use is definitely limited to its stated purpose. That's fine by me as that's what I bought it for. It's so easy to use and so effective that I will be eating more cherries this year than ever before!

Very Handy Gadget I'll use for every cherry season...
Whoever said this was worth the price, is not joking. The cherries I pitted before buying this handy gadget took me a very long time with a paring knife. I bought this at the time and received it after I did those cherries. Cherries are still in abundance in the store, so I bought a big bunch more and used this cherry pitter. It's really easy and quick to use. The cherry pit comes out in one fell swoop and leaves the whole cherry intact except for the little hole in the bottom where it was removed. The only drawback, and it's a very small one, is, the cherries now they are growing are so huge, that some of them wouldn't fit into the pitter without smashing it a bit. But that's no big deal really. I love the big ones, more cherry goodness in a bite. The little clear plastic keeps the juice from spurting all over, but you still need to a be a little careful or you will get things red from the juice. Just keep a paper towel and do the pitting over a deep bowl and you should be fine. Love this gadget, well worth the price. Just wash under running water and it's clean and ready to go next time.

This is a great cherry pitter
What an awesome device! I have a huge Bing cherry tree and for the last 3 years I have tried the paper clip method, the chopsticks and a bottle, tried a straw and numerous other ways to get the pits out of my cherries. I read a review on Amazon for another brand of cherry pitter where the reviewer said that that one was ok, but the OXO Good Grips was far better for a couple dollars more. That was good enough for me. So as soon as it got here I started pitting cherries and I could have kicked myself for not buying this 3 years ago. It is EASY to use, fast efficient and not messy. I cannot say enough positive things about this device. If you need to pit cherries, do not hesitate to buy this unit!
