OMG! Is that rust??
"Rust"? I am in no way trying to be the jerk here but if you do not understand this simple concept then you should probably have someone else sharpen your knives for you. The "rust" that you are complaining about is far from that. Take a gander at a technic called "brazing". A synopsis to save you the effort is this: It is a technic used to join two pieces of metal. It's similar to soldering or MIG welding, but also quite different. You have probably seen a welded joint where it is obvious that the metals have been welded together because of the visible joint between the two metals. For an example of soldering just take a look at a circuit board. Time for brazing. The benefit of brazing is that it joins the two metals with basically no joint. That way you have the two metals joined extremely close together, similar in looks to as if you had glued the two pieces together. Now the benefits of brazing should be obvious. It wouldn't work to try to sharpen a blade if the sharpening pieces had a gap between them, right? TLDR; That is not rust, it is brazing and you should be very happy that the metals are joined that way. As for a review of the product, it is fantastic. For a pocket sharpener to stow in your gear bag you can't ask for a better product. I have used it multiple times and it always delivers. I am particularly happy with the rod sharpener. I have always been very fond of blades with serration at the base and this rod works as you would expect and hope. I have recommended this product to many of my friends without worry of leading them astray, and every one of them have thanked me for introducing it to them. If you want a great little sharpener to keep in your gear bag for your small blades do not hesitate to purchase this immediately.

This is one awesome sharpener! Follow the directions and your knives will be razors! Sharpened my aunts kitchen knives, which were so dull they were practically butter knives, forgot I sharpened them, and promptly cut myself. Bad. So believe me, this little guy does a great job!! Suggestion: put medium pressure 6-10 times on sharpening side, then lighter pressure 10-15 times on polishing side. Knife will be sharp enough to do surgery!!

Nice sharpener to keep in the truck
This small sharpener has worked well for me so far, so I am going to keep it in my truck for when I need to sharpen a blade but am away from the house. I was reading about sharpeners and saw that many people were using these over the old whetstone and oil so I decided to give them a try. While I did need to use the "coarse" part of the sharpener for many more passes than the instructions recommended, once I did that I only needed to use the "fine" part of the sharpener as much as they recommended.

My favorite
Not too often do I buy something that is actually of excellent quality. My PP1 is one of those items. I use it for my entire folding knife collection and both in service (rescue) knives. (Gibbs' Rule #9) It sharpens with just a few swipes over both inserts. The most difficult thing for me to learn was "One knife, one sharpener" in other words, once I use my PP1 on a knife. Always use the same sharpener on a knife because no 2 are exactly the same. Not even two from the same line. And one more thing... I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to a sharp blade. When the knife is as sharp as a particular sharpener will make it.... Stop sharpening it.

Works on knives, and TEETH! seriously.
I've had 2 of them for many years and used it for my knives and I love it, works great for that. Its held up over the years, can tell the ceramic is worn down, no problem, didn't even know they changed the color of them, mine is black. The detent for the flip out part is worn and doesn't hold closed, but no big deal. So it never really drove me to write a review, until now. I slightly chipped a tooth and it had a very sharp edge that was cutting my tongue terribly. And I couldn't get any relief. Not wanting to spend hundreds at a dentist I began looking online for possibly remedies and fixes. People recommended nail files and Sandpaper and even dremels. But I wasn't feeling those as they would be unwieldy to handle on one of my back molars. Then I happened to remember about my little pocket pal. I chose my older one to use since the fold out diamond rod was a little less coarse from use. I scrubbed and sanitized and rinsed it first to make sure all metal shavings and any bad stuff was off of it. So I got my light and my magnified mirror, and I gently started rounding off the sharp edge of my tooth. The outer smooth coating of the tooth was already gone from the chip, so I wasn't worried about grinding that off. After each time i grinded my tooth I made sure not to swallow and spit to make sure not to swallow any teeth shavings or anything from the diamond rod. Also rinsed with mouthwash. It rounded my tooth beautifully, and saved my tongue from the past few weeks of pain.

Turn your pocket knife into a pocket razor!
I will admit that this is an impulse review after having the product only 30 minutes so I cannot yet speak to reliability and longevity...but WOW. This pocket sharpener is INCREDIBLE! Only a FEW pulls through the appropriate slot(s) and unless it was a butter knife to start with, it will already have a razor sharp edge after just those few seconds of sharpening. I really am amazed at how quickly this will turn your pocket knife into a razor. Unless you see an update to this review later, you may assume it is still in tact, functioning and withstanding the test of time.

Well worth the small price tag!
I only got this yesterday, so I can't attest to the longevity of the product, but for what it was intended for, this works perfectly. I've always been bad at sharpening knives on a wet stone. Never could get the angle right, and the edge sharp properly. As soon as I got this, I pulled out an old, dull, cheap knife I received as a gift many years ago, used 3-4 pulls on the course side, and around 12 pulls on the ceramic side. That knife is so sharp I can shave my excessively hairy arm, which I have never been able to do with any knife, even the new "expertly sharp" ones. As long as I get a few years out of this, I'd say it's earned its 5-stars and well worth the cheap price tag.

Better than the others for sure.
I have had mine over a year now and it gets used at least twice a week! I work in a cafe doing our daily prep so razor sharp knives are a must. After chopping 50lbs of potatoes, dicing 30lbs of onions Ill give my blade a quick swipe through the "Course" blades and hit it with a steel. Razor sharp and ready for 20 lbs of tomatoes no problems. The other chefs use another brand and they have replaced theirs several times. Mine keeps going strong. One of our cooks brings me her knives to get them sharpened every now and then. By then her blades are in pretty rough shape. A few runs through this and some steel work and they are back as good as new in just minuets.

and grabbed a relatively dull pocket knife of mine
So, I got this based on other reviews and upon receiving it, gave it a second thought about actually opening it. It wasn't that it didn't look impressive or that it was too expensive but in the past I would just get out a few stones and oil to spend some time sharpening knives while camping. After a minute, I decided that this Pocket Pal would still be worth it so I ripped it open, read the brief instructions, and grabbed a relatively dull pocket knife of mine. This knife was struggling to open anything lately and definitely wouldn't have been cutting through cables ties and the like. Instructions suggest 8-10 times or until your blade is sharp. I didn't need a blade edge repair so I used the "Fine" side and after the 1st pull through, it was noticeably more sharp. I stopped after the 4th pull as it is ready to go. This all took less than a minute, didn't include any messy oils, and anyone could use it to sharpen a knife without having to worry about their skill level. Also, I barley appied any pressure to sharpen the knife. The Pocket Pal has a molded in finger / thumb grip and was comfortable to use both with my left and right hand. While the peice is light. It doesn't feel cheap and doesn't seem like it will randomly fall apart (I'm big into high quality / durability products and expect any item I purchase to be such no matter the price point) yet it is very light weight. I'm glad that I purchased it and actually used it. It is going into my hiking / camping pack and I'm taking out those heavy stones and the heavy oil. My only question now is what will I do with my spare time now that I don't have to spend it sharpening knives? I'm now going through my house, bug out bag(s), and vehicles searching for more knives to sharpen! Highly recommend. I paid full cost for this item and it was not discounted or provided free for review unlike so many other reviews we read today on Amazon.

Best sharpener for the money
I have many whetstones to hone my knives and this model is the best for not only sharpening, but for portability. It can remain in the kitchen but I assure you, someone will make off with it. I keep mine on a key ring with a spare car key so that I can take it to the beach, someone else's house or camping, etc. It sharpens quickly and easily. So handy to have around. EVERYONE should have one of these on a ring near to wherever they are carving, cutting and trimming meat or game, and it's easily washable. I have this one and also one with a flashlight on one end, a sharp hole borer and I just had to have another just in case. I gave away all of my expensive knife sharpening tools in lieu of this. True it's not going to give you a surgical edge that you would want for your expensive knives but for every day use, this sharpener is worth every penny.
