I bought both the 11.5" and 17" (16.5") to assist my husband getting in the shower/tub after knee replacement surgery since I wasn't sure which would fit best. I have 4" tiles (very smooth ceramic) and ended up keeping both. I mounted the 11.5" at the entrance and the 17" at the far tub wall. The 11.5" handle did cross the grout line as seen in photo but I had no problem getting a secure grip. We tested both with full body weight and they didn't budge. We have been using them daily as recommended not expecting them to support full body weight and are pleased. We also make sure to test them before we enter the tub. After my husband recovers I plan to let my mother try these since she sometimes needs help with stability. I did notice that each bar was a different shade of white but that wasn't a problem for me. If I needed a lot of support I would install permanent shower grab bars but these worked great for my current need.

I chose this model because it was not the same length as many others. The 17" overall length allows me to span 4 4" tiles plus the grout between them and still be able to stay on the tile without hanging over the edge onto the grout. I have smooth porcelain tile, but the edges curve down and the grout is slightly recessed. If the suction cups do not completely fall onto the flat part of the tile, this type of stability handle will not stick for long or at all. This is my third brand of stability handle, and seems to hold the best of all of them. I put it on initially, without doing anything to the unit or the wall. It held, but only for a minute or so. I then scrubbed and dried both the suction cups and the wall, and reattached it. After about a month, it seems as firm as when it went up - Every time I am going to use it I first try to pull it both sideways and away from the wall and it does not budge. I would like it better if it had a colored indicator that tells at a glance if the suction grip is weakening or has failed, but I have found it is wise to always give a test pull on any handle before trusting my unsteadyness to it's care.

I admit I was a little skeptical about buying this. I've purchased "suction cup" items (i.e. decorative bathroom hooks) in the past and even with the lever-type suction control their performance was inconsistent. I knew that I would have to mount it at an angle (about 45 degrees) to work on my 4 inch bathroom tile, but that was fine. After receiving it and opening the package I was impressed with the quality and feel. It's not cheap in terms of look or feel; very attractive. Before mounting I ensured my bathroom tiles were clean and dry, then using the mounting levers per the included instructions I carefully placed it such that no portion of the suction cup was outside the edge of the two tiles at either end. Even before I pushed the locking levers down it was providing pretty good suction. Once it was locked in place it has a very strong hold. Like others have said, this is a convenience support bar, and a very good one. Of course you couldn't hang from it or put your entire body weight on it, but using it (as I do) as a hand hold to lift myself up from our shower stool, or to hold onto while washing my feet, etc. it meets that need in spades. Very happy I bought it. It will work on 4 inch tiles. The suction cups are less than 4 inches in diameter. I doubt it would work on any tile size smaller than 4 inches. It would work on any other flat smooth surface such as glass (I'd be wary of putting much weight on it or pulling it very hard if mounting on glass) as well as smooth fiberglass. The price is right, the quality is great, and it absolutely works. I'd buy it again.

I have both long and short grips in my one piece smooth Fiberglass tub/shower. I originally bought these for my 90 yr old mom, but didn't realize her shower tiles weren't completely flat. If there is any texture, contour or curved or if the ends of the grips would touch a line of grout.......these will NEVER, EVER STICK OR STAY PUT. I made sure I removed all soap and cleaning product residue from the walls and then applied them. I put them on in January and as of March, none of them have come off or moved an inch. They're stuck on so much I can pull on it and see the fiberglass wall move, but not the grip. So, be sure the surface you're intending to apply these to are totally flat and you've properly prepped the area. I couldn't be happier with mine.

After my most recent fall on 8/3/18 this 78 y/o decided I had to make my shower area safer for me.. I had wanted to install these shower/tub grips on the shower wall in my previous apartment's shower area but the tub walls were one piece fiberglass & these grips wouldn't hold on them but now my shower walls are tile which makes the difference.. I selected these particular shower grips because they were large & had textured grips on the handle which I felt was a plus so I bought 4 of them & put them in strategic places on the shower wall for my preference & need.. LOVE them absolutely LOVE them and they definitely do the job.. In addition to purchasing these wall grips I purchased the Drive Medical Adjustable Height Bathtub Grab Bar Safety Rail to place on the top of the tub rim to I could hold onto that when I entered the shower area LOVE this too & it was necessary for me.. Since my most recent fall where I fell backwards over the rim of the tub which I hit my back on & then fell backwards onto the very hard cement/tiled floor (first floor apartments always have cement floors) and I hit my back & head again I needed to do something to try & prevent this from happening a third time.. I had also developed a fear of getting into the shower which I am just starting to get over since I now have some security around me.. I also bought 2 of the Changing Lifestyles Safe-er-Grip Portable Shower Arm to assist me with my handheld shower device but really only needed one but I am keeping the second one 'just in case'.. This turned out to be a plus for me too since I am only 5'2'' & now don't have to reach up so much to get & return my handheld shower device which was causing me to become unsteady when I reached up to get & return it.. When you live alone the thought of the day is to "be safe" and now I feel I have accomplished that..

After trying multiple shorter grab bars (11.5 or 12 inches) none of them work on 4x4 tiles. This one fits perfectly across 4, 4x4 tiles, no overhang on grout. Fantastic bar. I placed it on clean tiles and it stuck hard and fast immediately. I need it for minor support and balance after back surgery. I have pulled on it with all my strength and it stays firmly attached..... I do not recommend it for full weight but I am 6 ' 208lbs and go to the gym regularly so I did put a great deal of stress on it. Will test it tomorrow again. I highly recommend it. Update it stayed firm fro the first month then slipped a bit. I wiped each cup clean then wiped with Vaseline being sure to not leave any excess on the cup. The bar has now stayed another 6 weeks. I am 6 ' and 210 pounds and cant pull it off. I would not use it as weight bearing but for balance this bar rocks...

My mother needed something in the shower at my house while she visited that could make her feel secure in shower. This bath bar did the trick. Simple installation...wet it, stick it, use. I recommend checking the suction every once in a while so there are no accidents. It's nice that there are different lengths to choose from. The one we got was perfect and installed around grout lines on our tile without crossing over, which would have eliminated the product's usefulness. If you need a helping hand in the shower, get this grip bar. It's not just for older people. A middle aged housewife (me) can appreciate it when I need to hold on to wash my feet. Your balance goes when you age. Children in the bathtub can use it while being bathed so the won't slip or turn and grab YOU, the dry person giving them the bath. You get the idea. What are you waiting for? Put it in your cart and order it!

Purchased 2 of these for either side of a tub/ shower. The shower surround is made from swanstone which is smooth/ flat without grout and the suction cups stick very well. No movement. Very sturdy, give enough support and you do not have to drill holes. Both an occupational therapist and physical therapist said that these were not appropriate for a patient if they require pulling one’s body weight up using these handles. This was not the case in our situation. Unfortunately we first tried putting in the permanent shower handles which require making some huge 3/4 inch holes for the wing-it’s or wall anchor hardware to support body weight. Our walls did not have enough space for the wall anchors, so the install failed and we have some big ugly holes to cover up. Try these first and see if they work out. We also purchased two of the swivel/ elbow type ; they are really customizable to your needs. I have heard that the suction rails do not work well on tile because of grout lines. I have not tested these on tile, just an FYI.

I purchased two of these so I would be able to steady myself and feel safe in the shower after my knee replacement surgery. While these are NOT designed to hold your full body weight like grab bars that are actually screwed into the wall. This bar secures quickly and easily to the shower area and were a life saver for me when getting in and out of the shower/tub. I will add that I did check them prior to each use, before even entering shower area to make sure they were still firmly in place. I am actually still using them almost eight months after my surgery. I would definitely recommend them if you need something to steady yourself getting in and out of the shower. I would not recommend them for the elderly who might forget to check that they're still firmly secured and who might not remember that its not for supporting your full body weight.

I bought this for my aging parents for a Christmas gift. I figured it was a good item for them to have to keep them safe. Unfortunately it wouldn't stay up on their wall. I told them I would return it for them as it was not working out but before sending it back I put it up in my own bathroom (which has newer tiles) to see if it would stay up. It was strong and I had no problems with it. In fact even when I released the levers that hold it in place it still stayed on the wall. Unfortunately I have no use for it so it was returned. But I highly recommend this product as well as the retailer that sent it. They promptly sent me a full refund when they received it back from me.
