The cadillac of sink strainers
After trying multiple sink strainers, I'm thrilled to report that the OXO strainer is the clear winner. I was sick and tired of the strainer that would move itself into the sink stopper position, and make grungy water backup while I was rinsing stuff, making me have to put my hands in there to try to get the f-ing post turned the correct way to let the water flow down the drain. Frustrating. This strainer is simply a strainer. It grabs big pieces of whatever you're putting in the sink, and it's easy to pick the strainer up and bang it against the garbage can to discharge the trapped stuff into the trash. I've had zero problems with food getting stuck to the strainer- even melted cheese falls right off. My last strainer was the wire type, and I spent a good amount of time cleaning and cursing that thing because everything seemed to stick and meld itself to the wire. I've had no problems with this strainer. It stays clean looking, and is easy to clean. I just empty it, wipe it off with a soapy paper towel, rinse, and replace. Magic! * Update November 2015 I'm still loving this sink strainer. It still looks brand new, and I've been using it for more than six months in my kitchen sink. It was a real problem solver, and I'm so happy that I found it!

Excellent Design
It kills me to write this review since I never thought I would be writing a review for a sink strainer. I guess this means that I am officially getting old but, when you come across a well engineered product that solves a problem for you, no matter how simple, it should get credit. This strainer allows full flow down the drain even when it is full of food particles so you can just clean it easily after you are all done. No food can sneak by due to the design and it even looks good. Pros: fits great, looks good, engineered perfectly, solves your kitchen sink drain issues Cons: Makes you re-examine your life now that you are this excited about a sink strainer QUICK UPDATE - 9/5/16 a.) It's over 4 years later and this sink strainer still hasn't broken in the kitchen sink b.) I'm still pathetic enough to update a review for a sink strainer 4 years later

perfect. it has stopped the pipes from clogging up.
we wash our dishes by hand in the sink, including oatmeal every morning which means there is a lot of sticky rubbery cooked oatmeal in the pan that ends up in the sink. this oxo good grips silicone sink strainer stays in place so that nothing goes underneath the metal top part, and the rubbery lower part catches everything aside from quinoa! then you just lift it out, turn the rubber lower part inside out and dump everything straight in the rubbish bin. perfect. it has stopped the pipes from clogging up.

This one is terrific and so well-made
I bought this to replace an all silicone strainer I had gotten somewhere and which had begun to come apart. This one is terrific and so well-made. The reason I buy silicon is that they can be turned inside out to really get rid of debris and they clean so well. The oxo has a wonderful metal rim [which my old one didn't] making this one sturdy and well fitting, yet still providing all the benefits of the silicone. I am sure I paid more for my original one than the oxo, which is a shame. This is an excellent, well made product and I recommend it totally.

If you want to protect your garbage disposal, this strainer is ideal
I bought this OXO strainer as a means to protect my garbage disposal after a very near miss of breaking a glass and potentially having sharp shards fall down inside the disposal. It occurred to me then, in a fear-enlightened moment of recognizing the glaringly obvious, that there would be no safe way that I myself could retrieve broken glass from the disposal, and it would be far better to prevent that problem in advance. Of course, this kind of strainer is also useful in preventing cutlery, whisks, jar lids--you name it--from falling into the disposal as well. However, those types of issues aren't a major danger to cutting one's fingers to pieces retrieving them as glass is, so it was the glass threat that shoved me into ordering this strainer. At the same time I ordered it, I ordered two other brands, and let me say, this one is massively better than either. The silicone underside keeps it firmly in place and prevents even the smallest particles of food (or glass) from falling into the disposal. The upper side of stainless steel also has a nice down-curving rim that provides additional protection. It has a convenient handle with a comfortable grip, which makes it easy to pull it from the drain to wash it. When this strainer becomes full of food particles, water can still go through it, so you don't have to clean it constantly while you are busy washing, cutting and trimming produce. In addition, as sink strainers go, this one is very attractive. Finally, the silicone and the stainless steel have no rough edges that can stab or cut fingers as, unfortunately, the wire-mesh strainer I purchased does. This product's silicone and stainless steel construction also mean it is much sturdier than wire-mesh strainers and thus less prone to get bent out of shape--which presents a real problem if you truly want to protect your garbage disposal or sink drain.

Silicone strainer works great
The OXO Good Grips silicone strainer works great. It is low profile and all but very small particles rinse in the strainer without having problems. It catches most particles, is easy to lift with center rubber center post, and then just invert the basket and tap on side of trash compactor or wastecan and dump contents out. Rarely there may be stringy things like cleaning the silk threads off corn on the cob that need to be pulled off by hand. The holes are 1/8 inch diameter. If you want to prevent even smaller particles a mesh screen. I replaced this recently because my wife accidently threw it out. We live with a septic and I try and avoid putting a lot of food products down the drain. I have have purchased several styles of stains in the past. Different ones with metal mesh style, baskets with metal holes. The mesh ones get bent over time and it's much harder to clean then. The plan metal basket style without a stopper don't tend to fit as well. If it gets dirty, it can be put in dishwasher and it's good as new.

No more clogs!
Count me among those that never envisioned myself being jazzed enough over a sink strainer that I'd ever leave a review. But I've been battling our kitchen sink ever since we moved in three years ago. This thing clogs constantly! Over the past few months it seems to have gotten worse. Even after a thorough cleaning, water drained at a snail's pace. I finally realized that it was the suction of the water pulling the stopper down that was causing all the backups. Switched over to the OXO, which has no stopper... problem solved. The sink hasn't clogged once in the two weeks since I switched. A new record! The silicone design is also way easier to clean than the old metal one. The only reason I didn't toss the metal strainer in the garbage is that I suppose I might some day have intermittent use for the stopper. Maybe. I noted that some reviewers mentioned the silicone getting funky and slimy. I just make sure to give it a quick scrub with my sink scrubber after I empty it. I only seem to really need to empty it about once a week, but so far this has kept it nice and clean. No slime here.

OXO: Saving One Garbage Disposal At A Time
For those of you still using the wire mesh sink strainer, stop. I mean it. Never have to deal with cheese melted into the little tiny holes again. This product is a game changer. Most food comes out easily with a simple bang on the side of the trash can, and if anything difficult just requires swipe of a finger. You can flip it inside out, but the food comes out so easily it really isn’t needed.

OXO Good Grips 2-in-1 Sink Strainer Stopper, Black - MUST HAVE!!!
I've had kitchen drain issues since my home was built in 1972! No matter what we tried drainage issues prevailed! I had to resort to installing VERY expensive dedicated electric drain pumps vs having the entire mid section of my flooring destroyed trying to run a new drain line to replace the permanently blocked / broken original underground drain line - 1 for my washing machine to drain properly without backing up and the other for my kitchen sink. The kitchen pump was always a HUGE PITA to keep draining and ultimately destroyed two drain pressure blasters in one year trying to BEAT water down the drain! Turned out it was ALL due to an internal plastic strainer inside the pump housing being blocked with some mystery black goo! I'm extra careful to wipe my dishes clean of residue before washing them, and NO grease goes down my drains to avoid blocking issues. I have odd mismatched sink drain fixtures and could only plug one side with a standard metal sink stopper. I bought one of these 2-in-1 Silicone Stoppers and VIOLA' !!! After two days NOW I KNOW what the hell was causing the drain pump filter to clog up! In only two days the Sink Stopper had caught very fine but long micro sized hair from my cat's water dish when I washed it every day and when I went to clean the residue out of the stopper - it had cat HAIR in it - so fine you can't SEE it but it gets EVERYWHERE! That same day I ordered a second 2-in-1 Strainer for the other side of my double sink! I LOVE that the outer diameter is so wide that it covers and seals the entire sink drain entry ring and can allows water to run / drain freely thru it or be used as an efficient stopper with a simple twist of the silicone handle! Kitchen mystery clogging issues SOLVED and my drain issues are prevented and - they're a whole lot cheaper than a plumbing service call!

Won't be without this
Second purchase of this. I mistakenly threw my first one out while cleaning. I put the original metal one back in the sink and after a few days knew I had to order this silicone one again. It catches the debris and makes it so easy to lift it out and bring it to the trash can for disposal. I like that the sink water can always flow through whereas the metal one would often lock itself in the drain when I didn't want it to. I clean the oxo weekly with spray cleaner with bleach and it holds up nicely. I love OXO products. There clearly is much thought behind their designs which make household chores easier for me.
