This was one of my son's favorite toys
I got this for my son when he was one, and he played with it for years. We recently bought a new one for our niece who is one and she was also super impressed with it. The hammering can be a little loud or annoying, but given the hours of entertainment, it was worth it. It would be nice to order replacement balls since we often lost them (when they rolled away) and the kids really liked to do all four balls at once. Helpful to learn colors, eye/hand coordination, and counting. We loved it and will give it as a gift to most little toddlers we know!

Simple, but fun toy!
I was ordering something else on Amazon and needed to add something to get free shipping, so I looked through the toys and found this. :) My twins were 25 months old at the time and they played with it for hours the day it arrived! Some of the balls were hard to get through the holes at first, but after a week we had no trouble anymore. It has been five months now and they don't play with it every single day, but when they do, they can't stop! I don't know what it is about this toy, but I also like playing with it! :) I'll start playing with it when we're in their playroom and they instantly steal the hammer from me so they can play. Sometimes you need two of the same toy with twins, but this is one that they can share. Yes, they did fight over the hammer in the beginning, but that was a teachable moment. They learned to take turns and help each other set up the balls. :) I'm so happy seeing them enjoy something as simple as this!

Excellent toy, had to exchange twice for a good one
It took a few returns to get a good one, but we love this toy. Our baby first saw this featured on a youtube video and it made him laugh to watch it be played with, so we ordered it. First one arrived with a dent in the side wood and huge glue globs, so we exchanged it. Second one arrived with a dented ball and a flaw in the tower where the balls wouldn't roll down (they'd get stuck), so we exchanged that one too. Finally, third time was a charm. One of the balls has a minor flaw, but overall not a big deal, and this one is perfectly functional, no dents, and the baby LOVES it! Great purchase, and thank you to the seller for the super fast and easy exchanges. Excellent toy!

Solid toddler fun
I got this for my son's first Christmas, which was a mistake. He was too young but the older kids loved it. One of the older kids loved it too much and discovered that the mallet, which has very square corners, could be used to make delightful dents in drywall. And then in the process of the wreckertons playing with it, one of the wooden ramps inside came out (we could have glued it back in promptly and it would have been fine, but then it disappeared, as toys do) and the yellow ball went AWOL. So now we are missing a ball and a ramp. I put the toy away for a while, got it out again a few months ago - baby was 20 or 21 months old. It's a GREAT toy. I'd say ideal for 18m and up. It takes just enough resistance to pound the balls through the holes that it is the right balance between challenging and rewarding. It makes a nice clackity sound as the ball rolls through - even minus a ramp. Simple means of teaching colors and numbers 1-4 to a very young child. Just plain fun for a little one. My daughter seems to have outgrown her hunger for destroying drywall so that's good. We haven't lost any more ramps so just that one must have been loose - it's totally and easily fixable if you have this issue, you just need to do it before you lose it.

Great toy and link to balls that work too

Set of 6. We love this toy! Just so you know the replacement balls for the Advance Ball Drop Tower work with this toy too. The aren't quite as snug, but my son loves that because he likes to force them through with his hand instead of the hammer. He is still small and the hammer is a little advanced still. I think this is a fantastic toy for any child.

Simple solution to prevent the balls from falling through.
Over a short period of time the balls just fell through the holes. I wrapped contrasting electrical tape around each ball so they hug the holes and our granddaughter now has the fun of pushing them or pounding them through again.

Update From a 1 Star
This is an update to the below review that I originally gave a 1 star review to. I called Amazon customer service and was offered a brand new one with no cost or return of the original item. The new one is perfect and all balls fit perfectly and all rubber pieces are perfectly placed. Once again I can stand by the Melissa and Doug brand. This was a gift for my two year old who was really excited when he opened it and played with it right away. The problem is that 2 of the 4 balls are too small and fall right through the holes in the top, so he only has two balls to pound instead of one. I am very disappointed with this product

Well built!
Seems the Mellisa & Doug brand has done it again. A great toy, well built and though it is a simple design seems they have put a good amount of effort into its engineering. The slats the balls fall onto on their way down make a satisfying clank sound each time, and there are little rubber stoppers in the holes at the top to keep the balls in place and to allow a satisfying amount of bangs with the hammer before releasing. One thing to note, when you first get it the rubber stoppers may be a bit firm. After hitting the balls through a few times or does get easier for your kids to do.

My Toddler's Favorite Toy
I have a 17 month old toddler who loves books, but not many other toys. She will play with her wooden tea set, her wooden chicken and eggs, and a bin of balls and that's about it. I love the fact she is so interested in books, but I have been searching for a toy she really loves and I found it. This simple toy has captivated my daughter. And not just for a few minutes or a day, but every single day since it came in the mail. It's a simple toy: four balls, a tower and a mallet. The balls are kept from falling by some rubber O rings, but the rest of the toy is wood. My daughter hates holding onto anything so she really isn't interested in the mallet yet, but loves pushing the balls through the holes and retrieving them when they reach the bottom. She replaces them and does it again. Over and over. My older children have also been playing with the toy and beating the heck out of it. They said they wish there was a larger one for older kids! One thing I have noticed is the balls, when hit by the mallet by my older children, have slight dents in them. (I have included a close up photo for you to see.) The color has not been removed, but there are dents in the wooden balls. I am really pleased with this toy and highly recommend it to anyone who has a toddler. The price is amazing as well. It's a win, win. A captivating toy at an amazing price.
