Zippo lighters are the best out there, period. I have been smoking a pipe for a long time, and my trusty zippo pipe lighter has always (and continues to) work reliably. I have had a chrome Zippo pipe lighter for over 8 years (matches before that) and it still, to this day, works like the day I got it. The ony reason I got this particular one (same one, different color) is that I wanted to treat myself to a different color. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING has ever gone wrong with my Zippo, and the only things nI have ever had to do to it have been: refuel, change flint, change wick. I have dropped it, sat on it, and it still works. There are a lot of pipe lighters out there, many will cost you several times more than this and will not last you. Go ahead and research the fancier pipe lighters out there, you will find that something always goes wrong with them. Zippo has, for generations, made a quality product at a low price, and it continues to do so. They stand behind their product 100% and, in the unlikely event that something does break they will send you a replacement part FREE. Butane lighters are cool looking, but do not last without costly repairs. If you want consistent performance, year after year, either get matches or a Zippo, a fancy and expensive lighter with electric ignition will not last you. Go ahead, search the "main players" out there and see waht people are saying. A few things to keep in mind: - People complain that the lighter spills fluid, but this only happens if you over fill it. Add fluid until you see the wick gets moist (without dripping) and you will be fine. - People out there complain that they can taste the lighter fluid. Well, I never had this issue. - People complain they have to re-fill the lighter (DUH! it's a re-fillable lighter). A fill will last you about a week, I'd say that's reasonable. - One thin I heard that it is absolutely and utterly ridiculuous is that you have to such the flame down too hard to get it to the tobacco. If you have to suck like a vacuum cleaner to light your tobacco, you simply do not know how to pack your pipe, period. I will not spend 10 times as much for Chinese made garbage when I can get a good, quality product, at a fraction of the price, made in the U.S. and guaranteed for life. Trust me, you are unlikely to ever have to use the warranty. Matches are great for lighting a pipe, but not as convenient. Bic lighters are good to have stuck in a drawer if you run out of fluid or matches. If you want a proper pipe lighter that will last you your entire life time and will be easy on the wallet, get a Zippo.

There are clearly two different populations purchasing this lighter. If you're a collector looking for fine workmanship and artistry, move along -- this isn't what you're looking for. You want some of the offerings by Jetline or Colibri (among others) -- they're wonderful to look at. I've had a few of them and, other than the fact they didn't work well as lighters, they were great. Finally, I decided to get a pipe lighter like granddad always used. It's obviously mass produced. Decorated with a sticker. No machined or highly polished surfaces here. But, it lights reliably and stays lit in the cold and in the wind. I've had a number of fancier butane lighters that frustrated me to no end. Most didn't light reliably inside; much less outside. I guess I'll put those butane lighters on a shelf next to my pipes to look pretty. I'll keep the Zippo in my pocket.

I'm a new pipe smoker so having to constantly relight with matches was getting tedious, especially with a breeze. So instead of going to the garage to relight, Zippo comes thru with a great product. Works similarly to a standard Zippo, except it's intended to work sideways to prevent scorching the pipe itself. Works great. Makes lighting 100x's easier. You can get a little Zippo fluid taste, at first, but doesn't really affect it beyond that. Can relight the tobacco towards the bottom of the pipe. It also fits in the standard Zippo cases so if you have a particular Zippo case you like, the insert will fit.

You cannot go wrong with this. Some people are against zippos as a lighter for pipe or cigars but they are my go to. You might get a zippoish taste on an initial draw but it doesn't change your tobacco flavor. Usually I only get this taste when I don't let my flame burn for a second before I go for a light. I already used a regular zippo on cigars and pipes, but I had the tendency to scorch the edge of my bowls of my pipes. The zippo pipe lights are the same zippo but the lighter inserts have a side hole on the chimney with a cap on the top. I gave the zippo pipe lighter a try and love it. No more scorched edges for this guy.

It’s been almost 5 years so I guess I can give a honest review. Quality is still there. This is my second Zippo Pipe lighter. I bought my first one in 1982. The old Zippo had the same features but it was a solid piece of metal that was used. A lot thicker and a lot more durable. This Zippo has stamped metal, and the top of the windscreen fell off when I first used it. So I lit the lighter and let the flame heat the metal and expand it a little. That was 5 years ago, and it never has fallen off since that one time. The lighter is still in remarkably good condition, a few minor scratches but the black finish is still good. It does what it’s supposed to do and it’s dependable and simple.

This lighter is one of my favorite purchases in recent months. It's basically an ordinary Zippo (which everyone should know and love -- right?!?), but the lighter unit has a hole in both sides around the wick so that you can turn it on its side for lighting a pipe. Works great. I get comments all the time by people wondering where I found such a cool Zippo. One of my friends even prefers this lighter for cigars because he can coax out a softer flame. There are inevitably a few critics who think that lighter fluid puts a bad taste in cigars or pipes, but I've never found that to be the case. Sure, just after refilling it has a mild odor, but I always run it for 10-15 seconds to burn off the excess. And before each light I give it a second in open air before holding over my pipe. I periodically use matches for fun and nostalgia, but always find myself going back to the Zippo, especially when outdoors in a mild breeze where matches take more effort than it's worth. I highly recommend this lighter for veterans and newbies alike -- the most reliable, easiest, and affordable pipe lighter you can buy.

I __love__ this lighter. I really like Zippo lighters, but with a normal Zippo it is fairly easy to accidentally damage the rim of your pipe's bowl, and just feels kind of cumbersome for pipe usage. Not this one. Because the lighter is intended for pipes, there are holes on each side of the wick. When you light it sideways over your pipe bowl, the flame goes up out of the (now top-facing) side, and when you "inhale", the flame is pulled through the other side and straight down into your bowl. Perfectly. I feel this makes the pipe-smoking experience even more enjoyable since the difficulties of matches and BIC lighters are eliminated. Even re-lighting a fairly deep bowl that has accidentally gone out becomes rather easy. If you like the look of a Zippo (who doesn't??), this is absolutely for you. This lighter has become my gold-standard and I can easily imagine myself using it for decades to come. I also wanted to mention that you should be wary of cheap lighter fluids. Some cheap alternatives may add undesirable flavors and/or aromas to your pipe tobacco. Avoid! Always use a high-quality lighter fluid.

As the "headline" states you really can go wrong here it's a zippo!! there made in America if that matters to you and they're built really well, not to mention there's a lifetime warranty on the internals so if there's an issue all you have to do is send it in. they have even been known to repair hinges etc on the case for no extra charge. all in all the lighter does its job even though it took me some getting use to with it being the first time I used a pipe lighter. all in all, I would buy again and I probably will for back up especially at that price.

I'll never stray away from Zippo. I was looking at other pipe lighters that were priced much higher and were not as highly rated and I am glad I stuck with Zippo. This lighter is an American workhorse that's very reliable and easy to use and maintain. Lights easily every time and the design is perfect for bringing the flame into your bowl without scorching or over charring your tobacco.

Perfect gift! Just what he wanted. It is well made of course, bc it's a Zippo! It's packaged securely & ships quickly. I have one small complaint but will not lower the rating, just something to warn other buyers about if you intend to give as a gift. Mine came w/ an unsightly "price tag" stuck right to the front of the beautiful lighter.. Fortunately I was able to peel it off & remove the "sticky" w/o much trouble, just be warned if you plan on having this item direct shipped.
