This shredder is awesome! It is surprisingly quiet for how much paper it can shred at once. I appreciate a few of its features: - Master power switch in back. I love that I can turn off the power switch in the back. My toddler is very attracted to the blue light on the front power button. I like that the front blue light auto turns off after a few minutes of inactivity but I really enjoy the piece of mind knowing that he won't be able to turn it on if I've killed the power from the back. - Indicator for amount of paper. We are trying to go paperless and have been purging a lot of our personal files. The light that indicates how much paper you are shredding has been really helpful to optimize my shredding efficiency. - Wheels and drawer! Our previous shredder was a basket with the shredder sitting on top and I hated it. I love that this shredder can be moved around easily and is self contained. The drawer fits securely in place and is easy to remove and put back for emptying. Overall I am glad we spent the extra money and got a nice shredder. If you need a shredder for your house, I don't think you will be disappointed with this one

I bought this "Powershred" shredder to replace a Fellowes "Intellishred" shredder we used for nine years (which we loved), but the on/off switch finally stopped working. I really wanted to find something similar, and this looks exactly the same, but is a bit smaller. I'm VERY happy with this purchase so far. I have owned shredders in the past that were very noisy, but when I got the Fellowes Intellishred nine years ago I was amazed how unbelievably QUIET it was! This new Fellowes Powershred matches the shredding ability and is just as quiet. It shreds everything I give it, and it keeps on going, all without any bothersome noise. So far, I am very happy with this purchase. Note that it comes in different sizes, this was perfect for our space... but there is a bigger bin available if you need one. Do use the oil they recommend for the cutters... I did and my former unit worked beautifully for 9 years! Also, get the liner bags to go with it, they are very convenient.

This shredder is nearly foolproof. It prevents you from feeding it too many sheets at once, turns off the blades if you put your hand near the opening, shuts off when the bin is full (rather than letting the paper back up into the blades jamming it), and shuts off when it has had too much. It can run for 20 minutes before it needs to cool down, but unless you're double-fisting paper into it end to end it's probably not going to need to cool down. I used this thing for over an hour running paper through it with 3-5 seconds in between and the overheat light never came on. It will shred most unopened junk mail, although some of the more diabolical ones (they've started putting sheets of thick cardboard or booklets in some of the credit card offers) will still need to be opened. It recommends you oil the shredder every time you empty the bin and it does come with a small bottle which will last several bin changes. If you're going to be shredding a lot when you get this shredder I suggest buying an extra bottle of oil to have. I haven't had the shredder very long so I can't attest to its longevity, but many cheaper shredders leave it to your judgement whether or not that next handful of papers are going to send the shredder into its death throes. This one simply refuses to eat anything it can't handle.

This shredder is great. I am shredding decades of papers and I must say, with this unit the shredding is going quite quickly and quietly. Oh there is some noise but nothing that makes your brain want to explode (like my other shredder). I do oil it after filling the container. The instruction book said that regular vegetable oil could be used to oil it so that is a cost saver. I bought the lubricant sheets and they work very well and are easy to use but they are expensive. I do not use a bag with the container, it was cumbersome. If you have a lot of shredding to do, set up a 35 gallon garbage can (I am using a new one) with a 35 gallon trash liner in it and you can just dump as you go. I've found that I have to push the shreds down in the contain to continuously shred for 20 minutes but that is not a big deal. With this unit, you shred for 20 minutes and then let it rest for 30 minutes. I've found that after 20 minutes, I have to hunt for more paper to shred. I can shred one to one and a half hammermill paper boxes filled with files in 20 minutes. There are lights on the front to tell you if you are overloading the unit, so you just have to remove a couple of sheets. I've only tried to overload it twice. Really this is a great machine for the price.

This is a terrific shredder. It's a great size---big but not too big. I've had it for a year, and it hasn't jammed once. It has an indicator to tell you if you put too much paper in, and even if you do it's easy to reverse the direction, so nothing gets stuck. The only complaint I have is that sometimes if you have a little slip of paper (like a single receipt), you have to fold it before you shred, or the shredder doesn't activate. That is pretty easy to deal with, though. I use mine at home, but it's versatile, and would be good for either home or office. No regrets! I recommend this product.

I've had it but a short while, but it seems very capable and dependable. Has a large receptacle for shredded papers -- much larger than our previous model. I really like the feature that provides feedback using 5 lights for how hard it is for the machine to shred the thickness of material that is in it. For example, if you put 5 sheets in, it shows perhaps 1 light, meaning the load is very easy. If you put 10 sheets in the next time it might show 2 or 3 lights.. Each time you shred, it provides this feedback to give you information on how many sheets to put in each time if you're doing a 200 page manuscript for example. All in all it seems that "Fellowes" knows what it is doing in building shredders.

After doing some research and reading reviews, I came across this Fellowes Powershred 79Ci shredder. It is very well rated but seemed costly to me. I was skeptical of the reviews and not sure I wanted to spend this much. However as I pondered shredding some of the old file folders, and remembered the grueling experience of using cheap local big box store shredders (at least 3 or 4 different ones), I decided to give this a try. I'm very glad I did! This shredder works as advertised and is a breeze to use! I was able to shred through 12-15 stuffed file folders (staples and all) with a fair amount of ease, with no mess and no jamming. I was able to shred at a reasonable pace without the need for the shredder to cool off. I also use it for day-to-day shredding and have not experienced any jams or issues. As other reviewers have stated, the unit is reasonable quiet. Would highly recommend, specially if you are tired of cheap, messy shredders that jam all the time! Note: Some reviews spoke of issues with the wheels (i.e. hard to assemble and sometimes break). I did not install the wheels. The unit stands nicely (and is very sturdy) in a convenient location in my home office. Don't expect to move it a lot but if I did this is not an issue for me.

I had just returned a shredder I bought in a store made by another company that was very noisy and couldn't shred near the amount it was supposed to be able to. I then did the research and found that this shredder had excellent reviews. It's very quiet, looks great, and can shred unopened not too thick mailers without opening them. I noticed some companies include thick cards to force you to open them first (AARP). I agree with the other reviewers that this is a great shredder.

This machine is by far the best of the many shredders we have bought over the years for our home and for our businesses. It would be worth twice the price because of just one of its features: --it never, EVER jams. In the rare event that you "overfeed" the machine (causing it to struggle) it will automatically reverse itself (multiple times if necessary) until it chews up all your papers, credit cards, DVDs, etc. It assembles in less than 1 minute; the casters roll easily; it's super quiet; the bin is spacious and easy to open/close; and the 5 lights show you how much stress you are causing the machine to exert. TIP: Buy the bottle of special shredder oil (not the pre-oiled sheets) and give the machinery a squirt every time you empty the bin. I predict that this machine will operate flawlessly --like, forever!

I have had the Fellowes Intellishred PS-79Ci Shredder for one week. I have used it on several occassions for up to 15 minutes of intermittent shredding and it has worked flawlessly. I have shredded up to 12 sheets of paper at one time (shredder works a little harder but still smoothly shreds), a couple of credit cards and approximately 15 CD/DVD disks. The operation with paper and credit cards is surprisingly quiet. You could probably shred with someone sleeping in the next room and not wake them. The noise level (dB) is probably doubled when shredding a computer disk, but it still is quieter than any other shredder I've worked with. One time the shredding process stopped with paper still sticking up above the shredder. I had a pair of 8-10 bank checks, side by side, so that a total of 16-20 total checks were being shredded at one time. I thought that since the checks took only a fraction of the available space for feeding in paper that I could shred two stacks at one time. Well, the shredder stopped. I pressed the reverse button for a couple of seconds, then the forward button until all the checks were gobbled up. No further misfires since then, even doing the same thing again with checks. Everything functions as Fellowes states. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a small bottle of oil and several clear waste bags. The bags work great. The operating manual is brief but answers some essential questions like what to do with shredding malfunctions, what not to shred, how long to shred and maintenance. While Fellowes tells you when to oil (at every waste bag exchange), Fellowes could have detailed exactly how to use their oil. Hopefully Fellowes technical support will be helpful when a question arises. Shredded material size is as stated and is the same for paper as well as computer discs and credit cards. There are units with more finely shredded material, and there are many units that do not shred as small. A motivated thief with patience and plenty of time could reconstruct most any retail shredder's output. That said, a thief would most likely dumpster dive for someone else's unshredded documents before sifting through your well shredded ones. Overall, I feel reasonably comfortable with the level of security of the shredded material with this unit. The construction and design appear to be of excellent quality with appropriate ruggedness. There is no bowing or undue flexibility of the frame when the drawer is out as has been commented on with the Fellowes Powershred PS-77Cs Shredder. The castors are resonably medium duty and can lock down to keep the unit from rolling away. The shredder without the castors sits flat and stable. Would be nice to know about the quality of the internal parts. I have read that some machines use plastic toothed gears which have higher/earlier failure rates than metal ones. At least this shredder has a two year warranty for the entire unit, which is twice many competing machines. Overall, the PS-79Ci shredder is an excellent unit, working exactly as advertised. The Fellowes website has a nice multimedia presentation on the operations of this unit, including the noise level. I haven't had this unit for very long but I am extremely pleased so far with its performance and fit and finish. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light to medium duty shredder for home or home-office, especially if they want a longer warranty, low noise operation, very good build quality and plenty of whistles and bells that actually are useful and work.
