Much better than Meow Mix
Somehow, Meow Mix has an average of 4.7 stars and Blue Buffalo has 4.5. I'm leaving a review to do my part in correcting this. Here are the primary seven ingredients of each brand (the role of each ingredient is in the parenthesis): Blue Buffalo: Deboned Chicken (protein), Chicken Meal (protein), Turkey Meal (protein), Brown Rice (filler/digestibility), Barley (filler), Chicken Fat (fat), Peas (nutrients & fiber), Fish Meal (protein & omega-3) Meow Mix: Ground Yellow Corn (filler), Corn Gluten Meal (filler), Chicken By-Product Meal (protein), Soybean Meal (filler), Beef Tallow (fat), Animal Digest (meat flavor), Calcium Carbonate (source of calcium) So, we have 4 proteins for Blue Buffalo and 1 for Meow Mix (I have nothing against poultry "meal" or "by-products" like some people, so I counted them all the same). As for fillers, Blue Buffalo has 2 and Meow Mix has 3 (keep in mind that brown rice and barley is arguably better for cats than corn, corn gluten, and soybean). Both brands have 1 source of supplemental fat. As for the additional stuff, Blue Buffalo opted for ingredients rich in fiber and omega-3, while Meow Mix has an artificial meat flavoring (presumably to make up for the lack of actual meat). Meow Mix also contains calcium carbonate, but so does Blue Buffalo (it's not in the primary 7 ingredients). Supplemental calcium is generally considered safe and beneficial for cats. Most importantly, Blue Buffalo's proteins are in the first few ingredients, while Meow Mix has two different fillers before even getting to the meaty stuff. The two brands are almost opposites: one is a super-healthy option and the other is good enough to keep a cat healthy, even if worse. This is clearly evidenced by the recommended daily feeding amounts. For a 10lb cat, Meow Mix requires a whole cup of food per day, while Blue Buffalo suggests feeding only half that amount. This is because Blue Buffalo has more of what a cat needs and less cheap filler. Therefore, a bag of Blue Buffalo is only a little more expensive per day. To me, Blue Buffalo is a 5 star food, while Meow Mix deserves 2 stars. The fact that the actual rating is lower for Blue Buffalo is shocking. That said, a quick search of the reviews shows that most of the negative feedback here is from an army of cat bloggers (maybe 1) spewing nonsense about urinary tract blockages. Seriously, I'd like to hear exactly how this food causes urinary blockages at a higher rate compared to others.

TL;DR Medium-high quality ingredients
TL;DR (Too, Long; Didn't Read) Version Bought (salmon option) to feed our hungry cats. The good - Our cats love them - the end. No really, the short version is that our cats will eat nothing else but Blue Buffalo. This product might not be the best for all cats because every cat is different (like how different people enjoy a different type of food). It is honestly a trial and error basis. Some cats love the cheaper brands, even though it is unhealthy (like how some people enjoy McDonald's). - A good/smart buy if you pick them up on sale or do the subscription service. - "life source bits" are like vitamins for your cat. It gives them a boost of nutrients. - They have a broad range of options for special needs cats and taste preference. The bad - It can be extremely expensive to buy compared to other brands. - Some cats can be allergic to the food recipe so try a small amount first over a few days before committing to a large bag. Is it worth it? When on sale, yes. Definitely a step above the other cat food competitors. Your questions, our answers What are the nutritional facts? I'm particularly interested in min protein % and max fat %, but I would like to know as much as possible! Crude Protein 32.0% min Crude Fat 15.0% min Crude Fiber 6.0% max Moisture 9.0% max Magnesium 0.14% max Taurine 0.15% min Omega 3 Fatty Acids* 0.5% min Omega 6 Fatty Acids* 2.5% min Does anyone know how this $37 for 15lb compares to in store price? Thanks! The average price of this bad should be around $34 or below. You can get them for $30 during special deals at PetSmart! I really like this brand and food for my cat, but I am having serious problems with it attracting ants. Are there any recommendations? Don't leave the food out for an extensive amount of time. Portion size the meals per day. Cats tend to graze throughout the day but they won't eat too large of a portion. Alternatively, you can move the feeding bowl to an area far away from the outside as possible to avoid attracting insects.

they all loved BLUE immediately
We read all the reviews.... and being new to trying premium cat foods needed to be a bit cautious... You see, we have numerous cats... :) Well, they all loved BLUE immediately. In fact, it was like they had been starved for good food all this time. We had tried Iams, and PetSmart and other Brands...yada yada. Now weeks have passed.... THEY EAT LESS OF THIS FOOD....I know, the bags are smaller and more expensive... but the cats get full and stop eating when full. We dont need to fill their trough as often! LOL We are using 1/2 of the purchased cat food as the past. Best News is that hey are happier overall, and with each other it seems. No more fights at the food dish or at treat time, and their fur and coats has improved to our utter amazement. THANKS BLUE BUFFALO... we are onward to trying all the various formula's!

Quality over Quantity - Cats eat less of this food
So I used to feed my kitty Blue Buffalo kitten food and he loved it. When he ran out of that one time, I switched him Purina cat chow because it was cheaper. I swear he turned into an ornery little thing, always wining and upset, never cuddling or content. It was like he was starving all the time. I decided it was the food. I swear as soon as Blue Buffalo adult salmon formula came to the door, he knew. Well, I had told him in advance that he was getting the upgrade. But seriously, after one day of this quality food, my baby is a happy boy again. I will never go back to cheap store bought cat food ever again. He's sitting in my lap right now content and satisfied. Also, he eats half as much of this brand. Quality over quantity. Trust me, it's worth it too pay a bit more for sake of love, health, and happiness! xD

Helps keep my cat from smelling and shedding excessively.
Having owned multiple cats over the past 10+ years, I can honestly say Blue Buffalo is the only brand of food I'll buy. Unless I somehow become rich then I'd invest in a raw diet for my pets. Blue Buffalo isn't cheap by any means. But I've noticed that it's helped keep my animals healthier and their feces don't smell as bad. They don't shed as much either. I love how I can read the ingredients and not have to Google every other one. My current cat isn't picky but she does prefer fish flavors and that's why I buy this particular flavor for her. I told my in laws about how it affects my cat and they decided to try the food on their dog. They noticed an immediate difference. Their dog seems less bloated, gassy, and her coat appears healthier. If you want the best for your pets without breaking the bank, go with Blue Buffalo.

I don't think you'll find any better
I have been feeding Blue Buffalo almost exclusively for about eight years now, and couldn't be happier. Prior to switching to Blue, one of my cats, who was twelve then, was losing fur to a point where she was bald nearly everywhere that she could reach, as she was licking and chewing constantly. She looked like she had mange, except I don't think that cats get mange. I took her to a couple of veterinarians. One insisted that she was overly sensitive to fleas, although we weren't finding any fleas. That didn't make sense to me since I had inspected her carefully and I knew that, with five cats, if one of them had fleas, they'd all have fleas. Another vet put her on steroids, which seemed to help some, except that it changed her personality, and that wasn't something I was willing to leave her on for life. Then someone mentioned food allergies, particularly to corn, soy and wheat. Not knowing any better, I had been feeding Science Diet, which was recommended by the veterinarian. I looked for something without corn, soy and wheat. At first, I tried some other premium food, and her fur started to grow back. I tried a few different premium foods, always making sure that they did not include corn, soy or wheat. Some my cats liked better than others, but I didn't find any that all of my cats liked. Learning more about feline nutrition, I began looking at what the foods did have in them, as well as what they did not have. When I came across Blue Buffalo, the idea of the Life Source Bits made sense to me. We began feeding Blue to our cats and all of them loved it. My wife came across one of the Blue representatives in a Petco store, and she and I both ended up working for Blue for a few years, both in Maine and in North Carolina. It was nice to be able to represent a product that I believed in entirely. I no longer work for Blue, but I continue to feed Blue Buffalo to my cats. The only kibble that they eat is made by Blue Buffalo, and about fifty percent of their canned food is also made by Blue. Three of my cats are twenty-one now, and a fourth is ten years old. The fifth died of cancer when she was a few months short of twenty-four years old. Given the age of my three older cats, I am a little more concerned about their hydration now than before, so I feed them more canned food than I would if they were younger. They appreciate variety in their canned food so I mix some other brands of premium canned food whose ingredients I approve of. Even with the canned food, however, all of my cats like the Blue Buffalo selections, and at least one of my cats will turn away from nearly every other brand that I have tried, the exception being Petco's premium house brand, Soulistic, which has good ingredients and all of my cats like it. I rarely feed them kibble other than Blue. Although I alternate between the Blue Buffalo kibble selections from time to time, my cats never tire of Blue Buffalo, and I wouldn't want to be without the good results that I have seen from it. All three of my twenty-one year old cats are healthy and active. Veterinarians who haven't seen them before invariably guess their ages as being a third to a fourth of what their ages really are. One of them has arthritis but you'd never know it as long as she's taking her supplement - another reason for feeding them canned food each day, since I can hide the supplement in the canned food. Other than that, they have no issues whatsoever. They play, they fight, and they climb. Being cats, of course they also sleep a lot. Their fur is beautiful, even the one who was once bald. Here's another huge plus, one that I wasn't allowed to talk about while I was representing Blue Buffalo. Although my cats are allowed to go outside whenever they want to (in Maine, it's not as if they're playing in the street), I have not had a problem with fleas since I began feeding them Blue Buffalo. This has been true even in summers when neighbors are complaining about fleas being a particular problem. If they are outside in the summer, I take sensible precautions and comb them out frequently, particularly if I see one of them scratching, but I haven't seen more than three fleas in eight years. My cats are not treated with poisons, either. Blue Buffalo is not a remedy for fleas, but good nutrition assists the cat's natural defenses, I believe. One thing that many people are concerned about when considering Blue Buffalo or another premium brand of cat food is the price. Yes, you will pay more per pound for Blue Buffalo than you would for a store brand. When you look beyond that, you will see the cost savings, however. Cats don't digest corn, soy or wheat very well. When you feed a cheaper cat food (and even some of the more expensive brands) that consists mostly of stuff they can't digest, much of what you are paying for ends up in the litter box. I can assure you that my litter boxes don't fill nearly as quickly now, as they did when I was feeding Science Diet to my cats, and what is in there doesn't smell as bad. The last time I checked, Science Diet was even more expensive than Blue Buffalo. Whatever you are feeding your cats, if the chief ingredients are corn, soy, wheat, or something else that isn't meat, poultry or fish, you might consider that you are feeding the litter box, so you should add in the extra cost of cat litter. I don't know how many people I have come across who talk about their cats, half the age of my own, as being old. Many people are paying high veterinary bills for health problems that may not be necessary if they were eating a healthier diet. With three twenty-one year old cats and one ten year old, my cats see the veterinarian rarely, and only for preventative checkups. Even the one with arthritis is successfully treated with Cosequin, an over the counter supplement that I buy here on Amazon.com. I won't go so far as to say that Blue Buffalo is the only cat food that you should feed to your cat. In canned foods, there are several other good choices, some of which I buy as treats for those of my cats who like them. There are other dry cat foods that use real meat as the first ingredient, and which avoid corn, soy and wheat. My cats prefer Blue, and I think there is something to be said for the Life Source Bits that are found only in Blue. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

Saved my cat's life!
My cat had jaundice in her eyes and gums. She'd lost half her body weight. I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with liver disease. The vet made it seem like a death sentence. A friend of mine checked with her friend who's a vet, same feedback. But then online I was reading how a cat can live with the disease, as long as they are getting enough protein. Many posts talked about force feeding their pets, and I couldn't do it. In all the posts I read, there was one that heavily recommended this specific brand and flavor. It is all natural. Honestly, I was willing to try anything. Her interest would perk up for people food. Thinking she was going to die, I literally fed my cat pizza and chicken McNuggets. Again, anything she would entertain eating, I was all about it. She didn't like the wet food I'd gotten her, including the prescription diet emergency food the vet gave me and said, even with no appetite, she'll eat it. Wrong! When her food arrived, I was so excited to pour it in her bowl. She began eating it!!! And about four days later I had to refill her bowl! It's been two months, and she's gained some weight back and I will never buy her another kind of cat food again. It saved her life. The pictures of her are from the first time I fed her this food, and the second is from tonight. Her coat is so much healthier. Thank you Blue Buffalo!!!

Absolutely awesome!
I should have switched sooner! We have 3 cats 1 is 9 and she suddenly lost weight and started drinking a lot of water I thought she might have become diabetic so I thought switching to Blue buffalo might help. It's been almost 4 weeks and I've noticed an improvement in all their coats and their general mood. My 9 year old cat seems to be doing a little better, she saw the vet and we couldnt get a clear reading on her so we dont know if shes diabetic yet. Shes got a heart murmur and one of her teeth is starting to go, no doubt due to the sugars in the other food I had been feeding them. The vet couldnt say enough good things about the blue buffalo food he was thrilled I had made the switch, if you have cats or dogs and you want to treat them well I highly recommend you start with their food. I highly recommend you do what I did and compare the ingredients in whatever food you're feeding them to the ingredients in blue buffalo, you'll see why it's worth switching.

The cats like it, and I like the ingredients list (*with update*)
Update 4/25/16: Began feeding this to my 3 furbabies on March 6th, and I have at least a 2 week supply left, possibly 3, so 15 lbs will last us at minimum 9 weeks/63 days. I immediately packed the majority in large tupperware-type containers to maintain optimal freshness. I once 'did the math' on how much it cost to feed them their cheaper supermarket-purchased food, and it worked out to be about $0.33 per cat per day. (Granted, that's at the smaller, 3-ish lb bag price. I have enough to lug into the house on shopping day.) This 15 lb. bag of Blue Buffalo however, even if it only lasts 9 weeks, works out to just over $0.17, per cat, per day! AND there was next-to-no lugging involved! So yay for my wallet and my back. Now for them: My cats still seem to enjoy it (I leave it out for them at all times, but they still generally come trotting over when I first re-fill their bowls. They also each get 1/3 of a 5.5oz can of 'gushy food' morning and evening, as well as fresh water daily. They eat no people-food.) Transitioning them wasn't necessary (the first week, I left equal amounts of their old and this kibble side-by-side. They ignored their old stuff completely, and there wasn't any digestive issues apparent at the time.) I have noticed an improvement in their general energy levels, even my physically-handicapped, special-needs rescue spontaneously plays now, something she never did before without me initiating it first. Her dry-skin problem has improved significantly too. The TMI part: Their poo does seem smaller in volume and somewhat less-stinky, as other reviewers have noted, so ... that's good. :D And even though the version I purchased wasn't the hairball-control type, and even though springtime IS hairball season around this house, I haven't had to deal with them in quite a while, now that I think of it. (With their old food, it happened at least weekly from one cat or another). All-in-all, I'm VERY happy I tried this food. Totally exceeded my expectations, I'd give it more stars if I could! The cats like it, and I like the ingredients list. Win/win! I'll update when we finish the bag, to see if they need to eat less, as some of the other reviewers noticed.

Healthy cat food for its price point
My cat loves BLUE dry food. She used to eat dry food from PURINA and IAMS but I switched her to BLUE after seeing the big difference in the ingredient list. From my research, cats are apparently not adapted to digest grain (especially corn) properly, but corn is often one of the top three ingredients in most store brands like PURINA and IAMS (not to mention budget brands like WHISKAS and MEOW MIX). This bag of BLUE dry food doesn't contain corn but it is not completely grain-free. However, 100% grain-free products tend to be very expensive, so while BLUE is probably not the best for your cat, I think that it is the healthiest choice within its price bracket. In addition, BLUE doesn't use low quality meat by-products like the aforementioned brands. Another thing to consider is the recommended serving size for these foods. BLUE is more protein-dense than many other brands, so the recommended serving size is significantly smaller. For example, the recommended serving size for my cat with BLUE is 1/2 cup a day, whereas for other brands, the amount ranges from 2/3 to 1 cup. Taking that into consideration, a bag of BLUE can last for a pretty long time.
