I ordered this because a number of recipes I've come across lately have required thin, evenly sliced pieces. I have a food processor that slices, but I could never get the slices thin enough. I was a little worried that I'd have the same problem with the mandoline, but that concern was in vain. The smallest setting gets me super thin pieces- I couldn't imagine them being any thinner. They are evenly sliced, given that I use the same amount of pressure for each slice. So far, I've sliced parsnip, sweet potato, and regular potato, and all three have been perfect! It was exactly what I needed to get a delicious chip. Additionally, I've never had a Mandoline before, so I wasn't quite sure how to use this when I opened it. Luckily, there was an excellent video demonstration that really helped me figure it out (see video above.) From then on, using the product was simple. It's also dishwasher safe, which is a huge plus!

I don't understand how other people have cut their hands on this; yes, the blade is very sharp, but the food holder covers almost the entire blade when clipped on, so unless people are digging around in drawers without looking and/or not storing their mandolins properly, there shouldn't be any issues. This is perfect for cutting potatoes, cucumbers, garlic and other hard foods. It can't be used very well with soft foods such as oranges (I know, I tried), but is still great otherwise. Be very careful when slicing small things like garlic, as the food holder is much too big for that, but I did it so I know it can be done. It fits well over bowls and doesn't slip, and it's easy to clean (although it did slice off a couple of bristles from my cleaning brush). I wish the measurements were printed on the mandolin, but other than that, it's a great edition to any kitchen, and for a very good price

I used to own a larger mandoline but it has been gone for a few years. I recently decided to purchase this one as it is compact but still looked big enough for everything I wanted to do. I do think that this is a great little mandoline. I think that the food holder is a good idea but there were times I felt it was more dangerous using it. I was slicing a granny smith apple to make apple chips. While the mandoline did it's job it was a little hard using the food holder. I found myself holding the food holder but then putting my thumb on the apple to put ore force behind it. I was very conscious of where my thumb was as I did not want to cut it. I did find that half of my apple slices varied in thickness. One side was the thickness I chose on the mandoline and the other side was paper thin. I thought I was the problem since it has been a few years since I've used a mandoline and just needed to get comfortable with it again. I would still recommend this mandoline slicer, since it is good and might take a few tries getting used to it.

I love this hand-held mandoline! I did botch my first try but nailed it on the second one. The first time I used it, I set it on the thinnest slice and tried to do it fast a la Anne Burrell. The resulting slices were indeed thin but uneven - most of them were half-moons. I baked the chips and they ended up sticking onto the pan because they were so thin like paper. On my second attempt, I used russet potatoes and yams and set the mandoline on the thickest slice setting. I also didn't cut as fast as I did before so that I have more control of my downward strokes. The result was perfect slices! I fried the chips this time in an enameled cast iron dutch oven at 350 degrees. Took around 3-4 minutes to crisp up. The yams cooked much quicker. Tip: The mandoline is quite narrow so I angle the potato to get longer slices. I hold the potato with my hand but when it reduces down to about 1-2 inches thick, then I use the hand guard. All one needs is common sense when using this product. I've never had problems with the food getting stuck under the blade and never cut any of my fingers even once. Overall, I'm highly satisfied with this product. I have a food processor with a slicing attachment but I don't want to mess with the food processor unless I cook for several people. Too much stuff to clean up. This mandoline is perfect for cooking for two because it's so easy to handwash. 100% recommended!

Who knew such a simple kitchen device could make me so happy? I actually find myself looking forward to using my Mandolin! As someone who makes and eats veggies and salads daily, this device is a no brainer! Stop using a knife to slice your cucumbers, onions, carrots, zucchini etc and use a mandolin! You can make sweet potato chips so easily too! Just be careful when you get to the end of the veggie if you are using your hand as that razor is very sharp! I usually just eat the rest of the small end. There are 3 size settings but I really like the thinnest one (#1). A super thinly sliced cucumber just tastes better than a thicker one! I've been bragging to my mom about how great this device is and she finally purchased one and can't believe how much quicker salad prep is!

I've bought one from this company about five, six years ago and it worked great until the day the blade finally broke. So when I unwrapped this one and began to use it, it was definitely a design improvement. Number one, there is a feature that not only allows you to choose your slice size, but to also close the blade to prevent slicing. When I've finished using the slicer, wash/dry it, it hooks on to the top of the slicer. What a wonderful design improvement. The two stay together in my drawer, number one, and, number two, it protects injuries from occuring when rummaging to find the item. Well worth the price. I'm really pleased with this inexpensive device...

Some years ago (decades??) I bought a Matfer mandoline slicer and it is great. Nice big work surface, sharp edges, etc. But it's kind of big and hard to clean so it has to be kept somewhere special and I only would get it out when I really needed it. Kind of a pain. Infinite thickness adjustment and can also julienne, although that's nothing I've ever had use for. We moved houses so all my good cooking stuff is in boxes still so when I saw that this little slicer was $15 I figured I'd give it a try. Wow. It's great! I'm so glad I bought it. There are times when I wish I had the larger work surface that the Matfer has but not often. There are times when I wish I had more thickness options but not often. Meanwhile, I use this slicer 2-4 times a week whereas I only got my old mandoline out maybe once a month when I really needed some thin sliced onions. Definitely get a Kevlar glove to go with this! I took a big divot out of a fingernail the first time I was using it but at least it wasn't a fingertip like I lost several times to the Matfer. When I do find the Matfer, I will be selling it. I may consider getting the larger model of the OXO mandoline slicer to be able to slice a whole medium to large onion but this form factor is a huge win. Edit: March 2019. With regular use, the blade has gotten dull so I have to buy another. Onions and potatoes still slice up fine but for example mushrooms end up with a quarter of the mushroom being mush. As one might say, not good eats. Definitely buy Kevlar gloves for working with mandolins! The tool for holding the item you are slicing is 50/50 at best in my experience.

Ok I’ve never used a mandolin before and was a little apprehensive. I trust OXO products so I bought this and I’m making scalloped potatoes for Christmas! I love this mandolin! The potatoes cut quickly and perfectly even each time! It’s easy to use and I just stopped short of the end to prevent injury. You’d have to be very careless to cut yourself with this. I’m so happy I bought it!! Made this job EASY and QUICK! Thank you OXO!

Better than expected. I went to a tea house Last week and had these delicious cucumber sandwiches. I can't get enough of these Damn thin sliced cucumber sandwiches. You can slice a cucumber In a couple of seconds. I've sliced two while writing this post. Sliced apples are good too. Every one needs one of these.

I recently used this to slice onions for a double batch of French Onion Soup-what a timesaver! I was able to get the width I wanted with the adjustable gauge, so the slices were uniform and cooked evenly. I'm anxious to try it on cucumbers when I make pickles. It's easy to clean and I like that it has a safety guard-don't have to worry about someone getting accidentally cut.
