Great Screen

The screen is great! We have used it for a little over a year now with no issues. There were no issues with wrinkles or defects. The delivery was on time and was rather entertaining as the box is rather long. The remote up and down is great - we don't use it frequently but when we do it is great to press one button and be done with it. Similarly when we lower it it goes right back to where it needs to without having to mess with it further. It feels sturdy and of good material. You can adjust the tension cords on the side with an allen wrench to get it just right. We did that after a few weeks of letting it set in and loosen up.

Lovin It!

Some older reviews are quite critical of this screen. Perhaps Elite was able to iron out some of their issues as the screen I installed is perfect. The installation process was straight forward and I love the mounting system which allows for easy placement and near infinite horizontal adjustment. Simply attach the brackets to your wall studs or ceiling joists, and click the screen into the brackets. You can then slide as much as you need to center the screen. Very cool. The Rf and IR remotes work perfectly well, and the screen lowers and raises quickly and relatively quietly. This 135" Tab-Tension beauty matched to my Epson 5040UBe makes for an awesome movie night. Another bonus was the great price paid, which was hundreds less than the current price of the 120" model. I had the screen in my saved list and pounced when I noticed the impressive price drop. I do feel bad for the poor UPS guy who had to lug the 140", 81lb box to the door all be himself. Most screens this size are delivered by freight carrier. (As they really should be) Even with its size, it required only 1 extra set of hands to help lift it into the brackets. It was so easy, I now want to mount screens into every room of the house. Wonder if I can get a volume discount...

ALR FTW

I usually go for a fixed frame screen, have previously owned Carada and Seymour. But we moved and are renting, so I didn’t want to pay a lot and don’t have the ability to put up a fixed frame in the new place. ALR is great! I have never seen one before and it wasn’t something I had heard of previously. In a room with 8 (!) small windows lining the walls during a sunny day, it was a pretty decent picture - this is with white walls and white/gray tile floors. Night scenes get a little dark. Check out the picture included, each side has 4 windows. Just a test picture before mounting projector, Epson 5040ube. I couldn’t be happier with the screen material. I have heard some stories of their build quality, but nothing bad on this one. There was a smell for a week or so. Initially when I dropped the screen it came down horribly crooked and it took about an hour for it to settle, I think the roll inside was jostled during shipping. But now works fine. A little more detail on how tight or loose the tabs should be would have helped but I fiddled and figured it out. Install was fairly easy (as easy as lifting the giant screen over your head while trying to snap it into the mount can be). Again maybe some tips on distance between mounts could have helped. Maybe I’m missing something but the little flimsy door that covers up the buttons and IR plug cannot be closed if you actually plug in the infrared receiver. At this price point I probably could have gotten a very nice fixed frame as well, in fact I had my eye on one, but alas it would not work in my space.

For the money, this screen has done well. I do not have a dedicated home theater room, so this is installed in our family room on the same wall as our 50" plasma. The room has a lot of ambient light and despite having a very good projector (Epson 3500) it does require shades to be drawn during the middle of the day. Of course this isn't an ambient light rejecting screen, but I didn't see the value in that when testing the samples ordered from Elite. I chose this screen model over the other elites because of how clean and thin the case is. That comes at a loss of integrated remote and trigger capabilities however. The screen does have the advantage of the mounting brackets that can slide along the case anywhere needed to hit studs or trusses in the ceiling (I needed that due to some dropped beams on the ceiling I hung this from). The power cord has a 3-way toggle switch on it that throws AC power to 2 different legs of the motor (one for up and one for down). I plan on hard wiring a switch in the wall and cutting the cord so its not handing down the wall now. The motor has stops built in so you can leave the switch in the up or down pole position and it will stop at its limits. The screen does allow you to adjust the screen drop on it. It has 12" of black screen at the top which worked well for getting the screen down low in our room (based on mounting it on a 8' high ceiling). I wanted it to be right above a Sonos soundbar we have mounted on the wall below the plasma. The 12" of drop was too much so I contacted Elite on how to adjust (you must do this for them to send instructions and not to void the warranty). Here is where I ran into the only problem with this product. On the case (left side when looking at the screen), there are two allen head screws on the motor assembly that you can adjust the upper and lower stops on the screen. ****Remember, don't do anything until you contact Elite on how to do this***** The lower stop limiter is supposed to be under a sticker on the case that says something like 'void if removed'. The instructions talk about this and so did the CSR from elite. When I removed that sticker there was no hole!?!?! I chatted back to tech support on their webpage the guy was somewhat dismissive and suggested I could reach it from the screen opening. I had to send him pictures showing how that was not possible. His suggestion was 'you can drill a hole at your own risk'. After suggesting that was not a solution and absurd for him to state that he said he could transfer my info to their warranty department so they can figure out a solution. Not wanting to return this to Amazon to only get another and find the same manufacturing defect on the case, nor wanting to deal with Elite's warranty department (which I heard stories of being extremely long winded) I opted to whip out the drip and carefully measure/eyeball/etc. to put a new hole in the case where I thought it would give me access. Luckily the hole was pretty close, enough that I could get the allen tool in and do the adjustments. The screen has held its adjustment and comes down in the same spot each time which is good. At night viewing, with the overhead can lights (in line of the projection image) turned off, the screen image is phenominal. The epson 3500 and this material work well once some calibration is done. 3d viewing is pretty phenominal, however I do not use 3d that much to eye discomfort it causes. I did try Avatar in 3d and my wife and I said it felt as good, maybe better, than what we saw in the theater back in 2009 on its release. The screen is surprisingly quick both raising and lowering and not noisy by any means. Elite sells an accessory box/kit to plug into the power cable/connector that gives you a remote control and 'remote trigger' capabilities for your projector to raise/lower it. That is a spendy item and I can't justify it for a $200 screen so a wall mounted switch assembly seems more logical. There is just a 'slight' cupping on the left and right sides of the image midway down. The screen is just ever so slightly bending in towards the viewer. It is so minimal however that I don't really notice it with any test images on the screen (geometry). I have no defects in the screen and there were no creases/etc. that others mentioned having the first time they dropped it. There was a pretty 'chemically' smell coming from the screen. I actually hung it in my garage for a few days to try and air/heat it out. It was still there when installing in the living room, but that is decreasing each time we use it. Definitely not overbearing like it was new.

Cannot understand the bad reviews - this is FANTASTIC

Maybe I’m just really lucky, or not particularly ready to give up on something. This screen is AWESOME. Seriously. Who cares if it takes all of 15 seconds to deploy. You ever try to get a manual screen to set up correctly in under 15 seconds ? This thing worked right out of the box. No wrinkles, no edge curl of notice, no smell, nothing but smoothe operation and cinematic awesomeness. Pair this screen with a new 4K projector, and your life will never be the same. I tried it with my video game console, Sunday football, and my set top box (I.d. Steaming audio and video). All routed through a 4K HDMI switch. Flawless. Awesome. Get this screen.

Great better than Black Diamond for me

Nice screen. Its close if not better than the black diamond. I would say much better. The BD gives me fatigue after a while with the sparkling and hot spotting. This screen does the same job but with much less sparkling. Still has a slight hot spot but no bother unless its a solid white back ground you never notice it. I had to get rid of the bd just too much roughness to the picture. I never feel there is a roughness to the picture. After watching the bd for a while then watching my lcd it would just look so smooth with the bd looking way rough like a rough surface to the picture. This is very convenient for a roll down so when I just want to catch the news for a few minutes I have the flat screen mounted behind it. It does have some slight creases in the material from being rolled up a I guess but after a while they get un noticeable. Great screen! I have white walls and ceiling and use this in a living room/ kitchen area. Epson 5030ub projector.

Very pleased

I purchased this screen because it was motorized, had a 12" black dropdown and could be mounted either on the ceiling or on the wall. The screen came very well packaged, and the packaging was easy to open and without any mess. All required installation hardware was included. I mounted the screen on the ceiling with the included hardware (did not need anything else). It did take two of us to actually hook the screen into the mounting hardware, not because of weight, but because of size. The screen operates well, unrolls very nicely, no waves or creases. Initially when the screen was down, it had a "chemical" smell. I left the screen down for a couple of days, and the smell went away.The only thing I do not understand is that the control switch, which I mounted on the wall, operates backwards, that is to say that logically if I rock the switch upward I would expect the screen to roll up into its case, but instead the screen comes down. Similarly, when the switch is rocked down the screen goes up. No big deal, I will get used to it. I am very pleased with the purchase, seems to be a good quality product.

Solid screen and family approved.

Got this in on the scheduled day. The package was sturdy. The installation was a breeze. The connectors that come along can be installed first and the projector screen snaps in, need two people to hold to hang. My wife and I handled it ourselves. The motor is quite, drops and folds in about 30 seconds. The tubing is very sturdy. The screen has about 12 inches drop and 2 inches border on side. The screen does have a smell of plastic but it's decreasing, it's been less than 24 hours that the screen was up. The electric inbuilt switch hangs out on the left, I need to hide it through the wall. I had specific requirements for an 120" screen with casing not being more than 115" in length. Of all the screens that I saw, all of them had over 115" in length for the outer cae. Only this fit in for my needs. The only gripe I have is that I don't know if there is a way to control the 12" drop, would love to reduce it to 8". The other elite screens seem to have have this feature but I couldn't figure out for this series. Minor inconvenience but not a big deal to me. Overall though, the huge black drop does have an immersing feel and a certain wow factor. The screen has a solid feel, definitely a step up over manual screen. No visible waves. Few more dollars than other screens but money well spent.

STOP POINT ADJUSTMENTS

I have the following screen: Elite Screens Starling Tab-Tension 2, 120" 16:9, 14" Drop, Tensioned Electric Motorized Projector Screen, STT120XWH2-E14. The screen came with 14 inches of extra black space at the top of the screen. I was not sure how to adjust it at first. I did not find any instructions. I can only assume that people always screw that up, so that is why they did not include instructions. Ok, on the left side of the screen's housing there are two small flat-head screwdriver adjustment terminals. The yellow one adjusts the stop-point for the top of the screen (how much it rolls up into the housing), and the other one adjusts the stop-point for the bottom of the screen. Either way, both terminals are labeled with a plus (+) or minus (-). Plus ascends (raises up), while minus descends (lowers down). ..turning the non-yellow terminal towards the positive raises the screen higher and hides the extra black border you don't need at the top. Plus raises, minus lowers. This is a terrific screen. A white housing looks better in a home that has a white ceiling and white borders. I called one of the dealers for instructions. Elite said you must call them before you proceed.

Great screen in many ways

First off, the screen arrived well packed and undamaged. A big relief for a 65lb box that is like 10 feet long. Second, installation is a delight in the world of installing things. It involves securing two brackets (mine is a ceiling mount) and sliding the screen onto them. Proper placement in confirmed with a satisfying click into a locked position. Then the screen can be moved back and forth on the brackets for final placement adjustments. As for the screen, It comes with two remotes - one of which works well (the RF one) and one of which is garbage (the IR one needed to be within 5 feet to work). The speed of lowering and raising is pretty quick with the new tubular motor in this version of the Starling series. The screen quality is very good with no waves at all near the tension edges. The motor is anything but silent - but not overly loud. Aesthetically I love the white housing and unobtrusive design. It blends perfectly with my white molding and baseboards, white in-ceiling speaker trims, white security cameras etc. For this price point, I couldn't be happier. I don't feel disappointed in the least that I didn't drop two or three times this much on a high end screen. I don't know what would make me any happier.
