I looked at several different ice cream makers. This one works well - the price is very fair. The motor does not get over heated. The freezer size is 6 quarts- you may need to double or triple recipes in order to fill it. The wood barrel was nice and sturdy. My only complaint us the smell when you open the box- we filled it with water a few hours before using it to allow some expansion, and I let it set outside for a couple of days to air out. The smell of pungent lacquer is now gone. The hand crank works well also. This is more like the old fashion crank set we had for 20 years that finally broke - except now having a motor. That is exactly what I was looking for and I do use the hand crank as well as the motor. Make sure you have 2 buckets of ice to fill when you start churning.

great ice cream churn...6 qt container gives more room for ice cream to set up....electric motor helps start freezing process and hand crank then gives grandkids great fun of turning themselves while firming up ice cream...love wooden bucket...just need metal dasher but plastic does well

Follow the instructions and everything will go smoothly. Great recipes, easy to understand instructions when putting it together. Follow up care and maintenance of machine easy to do. Kids thought it was cool watching the ingredients we put in there come out as ice cream. This will become a family tradition of making ice cream at all family functions and holidays.

.Maxi-Matic EIM-506 Elite Gourmet 6-Quart Old-Fashioned Pine-Bucket Electric/Manual Ice-Cream Maker After reading reviews on several different ice-cream makers, I decided that whether I bought an expensive maker or a relatively inexpensive one, I just had to hope and get lucky to get a good one (they all appeared to be manufactured in the same foreign continent, anyway). Being of a rather frugal nature, I decided on the $70.00 Maxi-Matic 6-qt. maker, and am I glad I did! Upon receiveing the maker, the first impression I got was that the wooden bucket had been marinated in several coats of sealer (and still had plenty of sealer fumes present). After washing everything in soap and water, the smell was gone and I was getting anxious to try the unit out. I filled the bucket with water to let it soak for a couple of hours before using, as instructed, and was pleased to note that absolutely no water leaked from the nice-looking wooden bucket. With the ice-cream mix poured into the shiny aluminum container and inserted into the wooden bucket, I anxiously placed the electric motor unit on the bucket and turned it on, using the very handy electric switch built into the unit, to see how it sounded. It was quiet as a mouse. I added ice and rock-salt, and set back to see how long the freezing process would take. After 40 minutes, the motor finally stopped, so I removed the motor, pulled out the churn, threw a towel over the maker, and let it set for a a few minutes while eating dinner. Upon opening the ice cream container, I was treated to the almost-heavenly taste of vanilla ice-cream of a perfect consistency. After eating, the rest went into the freezer for future indulgence. Thank you, Amazon, for selling this remarkable product.

LOVE THIS!! I purchased this in July & we used it about 5-6 times over the summer. We have experimented with recipes in the book that comes with it (some better than others) and that I found online. This ice cream maker works great. Using the motor it takes about an hour. We have not tried the hand crank yet. The bucket is high quality and holds water well (although, we used it outside every time just to be safe). Overall, this is a very high quality product and I couldn't be happier.

I remember that sight and sound when I was a kid... the motor humming in the back yard and the wooden barrel churning away. You know it is close to being done when you hear the motor straining. If you are looking for that feeling again, and plan on using 3-5 times a summer, and not looking to break the bank, then this is your unit. We are extremely happy with this ice cream maker. We don't make ice cream a lot, but when we do, we like to make it an experience. This unit allows for the automated churning, but also includes a nice hand crank that the kids love taking turns cranking at the end of the ice cream process. It makes them feel like they are invested in the end result, which in turns make the ice cream taste that much better. I will point out that other reviewers mention that the handle on the hand crank seems flimsy and I would partially agree. The design flaw is in the connection between the rod an the handle. It is simply held together by a screw and it wobbles like crazy as you turn it. It is mildly annoying and I could see how the constant movement will create a stress on the screw causing it to eventually break. However the fix seems simple enough with the purchase of a new screw. This did not warrant a lowering of the stars in my review as we are just too happy with the product.

THIS CHURN IS HUGE AND I LOVE THE HAND CRANK SO WHEN THE MOTOR STOPS I TURN FOR ANOTHER 5 MINS PROBABLY GIVE OR TAKE AND WE HAD THE MOST FIRMNESS HOMEMADE ICECREAM I'VE EVER MADE I GOTTA WORK ON MY INGREDIENTS SOME BUT GREAT CHURN FOR A GREAT PRICE.

When I started looking for a family ice-cream maker, I didn't find much. Everything in our price range made a quart or less and used a holder that got cold in the freezer before using it to churn the ice-cream. I was afraid I'd have to spend $300 and get one of those professional ice-cream makers that you see on the Food Network. Then I found this. It's just good old-fashioned "technology" with a motorized attachment on top that does the work for you. It's the best combination of old-school and new-school out there, and costs not much more than those one-quart makers with the container that goes in the freezer. Those other makers don't stay cold long enough to completely churn the ice-cream. With this Maxi-Matic, I just keep adding ice, and it stays cold until the ice-cream is thick, creamy and delicious. Yum.

This ice maker worked great as advertised. After soaking per instructions, had no leaks from the bucket. The ice cream made by this machine came out great. If I had to say something bad about it, it would be that it can be a bit loud and noisy. Also the recipes were pretty good but not the best that are available. Although the ice cream came out great, it is definitely a good investment. The only suggestion I would have is to hand crank the ice cream mix after it shuts off until the ice cream hardens enough to make it hard to crank. Otherwise, great product.

I recieved my maker in the mail was excited and wanted to make ice cream right then, but directions said the canister needed to be placed in freezer for 2 to 3 hours before use. So I waited patiently until the next day. I made up 6 cups of ice cream mixture, poured into the cooled canister, started up the machine. Motor started running, wasn't as loud as I'd been led to believe, however, the thicker the mixture got the louder the motor got. Directions says it takes approxatemately 45 minutes to make ice cream, it took over an hour. Tasted better than store boughten ice cream. The only thing I think I would change is the drain hole needs a spout so it dosen't have to sit in sink or tub. Other than that it works just great.
