This printer has done everything it promised very well. Startup: very fast from sleep mode. I timed the first page out at about 19 seconds after I hit the print button. To my surprise it actually wakes up pretty fast from being turned all the way off (switch on the righthand side). The time from being switched on to first page out (had print jobs waiting) was 33 seconds. Printing: fast with good quality. Makes about as much noise as you would expect, certainly not enough to be troublesome. Toner save mode printing is pretty light but still easy to read. I printed some full page pictures, which turned out pretty well. Pages do come out slightly curled, but not enough to bother me at all. Scanning: Exceeded my expectations. I have not had the problems other reviewers mentioned about scan quality. I scanned in some 4 x 6 pics and blew them up to full screen on my 21 inch monitor, the quality was good. At 4 x 6 size they look perfect, and at roughly 4x magnification the quality is still acceptable (some pixellation visible as well as some flaws in the original). Most of my scanning needs are documents, and this printer handles that quickly and flawlessly. I love being able to scan multiple pages using the document feeder. Copying: works perfectly, really simple with the document feeder. Document feeder: works perfectly for copying or scanning. Toner: I can't comment as I have not used the printer enough. Overall this is an excellent all-in-one that does each of it's jobs very well. I bought this for home use as a replacement for an old ink jet printer, and I love it. For me, it is incredibly handy to be able to scan or copy any document right from home. Also having the speed and relatively low cost of each page makes me more likely to print things out, which makes my life easier.

When I bought this unit three years ago, I was looking for something for the home that could laser print like a champ, scan documents, and make copies. This unit by Brother surpassed my expectations and is going strong since 2008 (it is currently 2011). It is an absolute workhorse that never fails. The multi-page feeder, the single-page feeder, and the copier glass are all top-notch. Never any artifacts or problems in my photocopies or scans. The one-touch scanning software that Brother provides with this unit, called "Control Center," is absolutely top-notch. You put your document on the glass, open Control Center, and click the button. Bam. The document is scanned to your exact specifications (file format, size, color format, etc.) into the location you specify, by the naming convention you specify. A great freebee that makes life easier. I think Brother really "gets" that; products like these are supposed to make your life easier. This unit certainly does that. I can't recommend this product enough. If you need laser-quality black-and-white printing and don't need color printing, this is the only way to go. If I had to quibble, I'd say the construction sometimes feels a bit flimsy. It wouldn't take much pressure to break some of the plastic parts. I probably wouldn't recommend this unit for a busy office (although I have seen it in busy offices, and it seems to do just fine). But for the home and my purposes, it's a champ.

After years of struggling with inkjet printers I finally decided that color was not worth the hassle. I was prepared to spend just about any amount to get a printer that worked for a few years without constant troubleshooting. The Brother 7040 has done the trick so far. I purchased two printers: one for the office and one for my house. Both units have performed flawlessly for well over a year. Thanks to some low-cost toner refill kits, I am still on the original toner cartridge for both units. The print quality is great and the speed is more than acceptable. For the one or two occasions each year when I actually need a color print, I put my data on a flash drive and head to the local Kinko's or CVS. Factor in the time money and aggravation of my old inkjet printers, and I am miles ahead with these Brother printers.

I read the Amazon reviews before purchasing. I replaced yet another Epson ink jet (this time a 6400 model) because the ink quit flowing right. I've tried those fixit kits with the syringe and the liquid but and had very limited success. So, I decided that I wanted a multifunction laser this time so I could quit buying the ink. The DCP-7040 jumped out at me as the best rated and best value. The Amazon price with free shipping was the best so I ordered it. OMG! it arrived the next day. So far that high rating and value has been borne out in use. I've had it for about a month and the family loves it. When the computer it is connected to is on it will bonjour from anywhere in the house.

This is my second Brother DCP copier. No complaints. All functions are perfect with my Mac. First copier lasted 4 years. I learned that cleaning the rollers makes for longer lasting life with this machine. But then I need cleaning too for better performance. Those little paper dusts make the sensors go off and you will go nuts with the message"clean the drum or back door is open" if paper dust remains inside. All said, I probably got a year longer from the first DCP due to maintaining as per booklet. I expect same from this one. The IMAGES ARE BEAUTIFUL. This is the honeymoon . I will keep you posted if any nasties happen. But then Brother's customer service has been tops with correct and pleasant help when needed. Now if only this machine could talk. Keep in mind that it is the 7040 series that is very compatible with the Mac. Happy copies.P.J.Today

This laser printer saves me big time money on ink over my old HP inkjet. I am a student so I do a lot of printing. I have no need for color printing so this works great. It's fast and I haven't had any problems with it at all. It is the easiest printer I have ever set up. It works great with my mac. The color scanning works great for pictures too. Brother makes a good printer. I am impressed with my first laser printer. I will never go back to inkjet.

I have been a long time user of Brother products, not only because they are solid machines, but because you can also get refurb or generic cartridges on the cheap. I received my model DCP 7040 today and was able to setup the new machine in about 15 minutes including software install. Knowing that the machine comes with a starter cartridge that has a capacity of approximately 1000 pages, I also purchased a high capacity knockoff toner through amazon for an additional $16. (I will write a review on that product as well when it comes time to insert into the printer) I have already tested out all of the features. This is so far, a solid machine. No issues installing and operating on my PC running Windows 7. Startup to print time is nominal, and the overall noise output of this machine is less than the other three ink jets that we have in this office. Here is a breakdown in price difference between this machine and my Brother MFC ink jet (for kicks I will also breakdown an HP model we have): Brother DCP-7040 - Monochrome I purchased the TN360 compatible cartridge through Tonerpals via Amazon at a rate of $15.40 + $3.99 shipping. Total cost $19.39. This is a High Yield product which allows for approximately 2600 printed pages per cartridge. Price per page (not including paper) $0.00746 Price per page ($2.50 ream paper) $0.01246 Laser paper is not needed in a laser machine, I have always used normal print paper without any issues and but it in bulk at Sam's or Costco. Brother MFC 420cn - Color (4 cartridge) I have used this machine now for over 4 years without any issues using compatible LC-41 ink sets purchased through Vivamart via Amazon at a rate of $8.62 for an 8 pack (2x each) with free shipping. Each cartridge will yield approximately 250 printed pages normal load and much less when printing photos. Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $4.31 (not including paper) $0.01724 Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $4.31 ($2.50 ream paper) $.02224 HP Officejet 6500 Wireless - Color (4 cartridge) This machine is just over a year old and the cheapest I can find a set of non OEM's is through eforcity via Amazon at a rate of $22.04 + $2.95 shipping for a total of $24.99. (if you can find them cheaper, by all means...) This also performs at approximately 250 pages per cartridge unless a high yield black is used. the high yield alone is $15+ for the non OEM. Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $24.99 (not including paper) $0.09996 Price per page based on 4 cartridges at $24.99 ($250 ream paper) $0.10496 This is very much a biased review for Brother equipment, but also based off of current prices for cartridges through Amazon, and at the lowest price listed. Brother Inkjet machines are usually the only comparable machines as far as cost per page (cpp) is concerned, to the costs associated with printing on a laserjet. There is no way I could in good conscience compare a monochrome laserjet to a full color 4 cartridge machine which is why I offered the cpp of laser monochrome, and then those of the comparable multi-function inkjet options. Wanna see how your current setup matches up? Total cost of cartridges / number of pages printable = cpp Remember that even though you are printing black and white pages on your full color machine, you will still be utilizing a small portion of your color cartridges to print out that black. There is no real algorithm that will allow you the precise amount of ink used, so a basic total is given. This is why when the cartridge capacity says 250 pages, that is the formula I use. For paper costs: price per ream / 500 = cost per page. ______________________________________________________________________________ This is why I ALWAYS purchase a Brother machine. As you can see, it costs nearly 5 times as much to print on an HP unit as it does to print on a comparable Brother based on prices pulled from the same website. Amazon usually has the lowest collection of prices for ink and toner. I hope this information helps you in your quest to find the best bang for your buck. Buy Brother.

Purchased this for Home Office use and this has become probably the best purchase of auxiliary equipment I have ever purchased. This Laser Printer is inexpensive to operate and easily does it all. If I was to change anything it would be to have a back light for the LCD window. Outside that there is nothing else to desire for, "it has it all".

I used the customer feedback to make this choice and it was the right choice! I've had many printers over the years but most are expensive to feed (Color cartridges). Color printing isn't usually important for my use. This printer is the best I've had yet! I love the ADF for scanning. It speeds things up a lot. This unit has simplified a large chunk of my home office chores. I'd buy this again and highly recommend it to friends & family.

Bought this device to use for a home office. I couldn't be happier. It performs all its functions flawlessly. Print, copy, & scan quality & speed are all excellent. I also liked that it left out the fax capability. It is much cheaper & more efficient to scan a document & use an online fax service to send & receive faxes. Setup was a breeze as well. If you need an inexpensive multi-function solution for your home and/or office, you can't go wrong with this unit. You can pay more for other brands, but you certainly won't get more.
