This is a really excellent product. I had an earlier version that eventually gave out on me. This is the updated version, a little bigger and with the added steam tray. This works extremely well for cooking Oriental food at the table.

Well Made but Larger than I Thought
I bought the Zojirushi EP-RAC50 Gourmet d'Expert 1350-Watt Electric Skillet. It's really nicely made and easy to use. It's a very well made product and I love it. Although it is rather large and suitable for a decent size family. The size is like having an Extra Large pizza in the middle of your table, so you'll need to accommodate room for the size. It's deep so probably can feed at least 8 people. I use this for Shabu Shabu (dipping thinly sliced meat in broth served with dipping sauce) and it really can be used for a large family of 8 or more. As a result, you'll need a bit of storage when this is not in use. If space is an issue, it may be better to look for smaller alternatives like the Aroma Housewares ASP-137 3-Quart/10-inch 3-in-1 Super Pot with Grill Plate, White/Black.

Heat fast; Non-stick coating; Easy to clean
This is the best Electric Skillet I've ever bought. I used to own many traditional portable stoves or induction stoves. Many times I found that the heating procedure was too slow. So induction ones do heat rapidly, but the fact that I have to put a pot on top of it is somewhat unstable or inconvenient for eating hot pot. Zojirushi provides a perfect solution to the above problems. First of all, it heats fast and the temperature can be set up to 480 F. Second, the whole skillet is low and flat, which makes it easier for hot pot and grill. Third, the non-stick coating is excellent. I used to hate cleaning hot pot cookware and grill pan due to the greasy stuff. But for this pan, cleaning is a piece of cake. In conclusion, I absolutely love this skillet and would definitely recommend it to my friends

Fanatastic Appliance
I've had this applicance for 3 months and I'm sorry I waited so long to purchase this. It's a fantastic electric skillet and pot combination. I cook hash browns in the skillet, perfectly, and make soups in the pot. The inserts are lighter in weight, easy to clean and wipe dry. Quite frankly, I was having a problem with a front burner in my gas stove, which would cost $350 to repair or $$$$ to replace the 20 year old cooktop. This item has allowed me to handle over 80% of my cooking needs and I don't miss that gas burner any longer. I would think this would be perfect appliance for a person/couple starting up a kitchen or perhaps a dorm room. The only very minor issue I have with it, is the cord connection to the base. It's designed perfectly for safety, its connection is more magnetic, than "inserting" into the fitting, so if someone tripped over the cord and you had it sitting on a dining room table, the skillet and contents most likely would remain where they are. That being said, if it's sitting on your kitchen counter, just recheck the cord before use and make sure it's still attached to the base.

Zojirushi products are excellent in general
Zojirushi products are excellent in general. Others have covered pretty much everything, so I just provide my take on a couple of issues that were not discussed in depth. If you are on the fence between this model and the smaller PBC10, the extra pan by itself justifies the extra cost. Assuming the skillet lasts as long as the pan (which is probably true), this one will last 2x longer. Regardless of the cost, the 12-inch size of this model is the most useful and versatile size in a skillet. I made Paella in the shallower pan and it was enough for 3 to 4 reasonable size portions. So the size is perfect for 3 to 4 people or two people with some leftovers. Some talk about the unit being huge and heavy, well it is 15-inch in diameter (17 if you consider the handles). It fits easily on a counter, I mean 15-inch is 15-inch, how is it bigger than what you had in mind? Some question the safety of the non-stick coating, I believe this is less of a concern in an electric skillet, because the temperature is better controlled, so as long as you use it properly (don't leave skillet on high temp without food in it) it is less likely that it will exceed 500 degrees, which is the safe temp for non-stick coatings. Be gentle with non-stick coating. Wash it properly and patiently and use soft cooking tools. It is good quality but still needs proper maintenance.

Excellent Electric Fry Pan & Soup Maker
This is a really nice set; the other people who reviewed it spoke highly of the unit, and, by golly, they are right. I like the heavy duty no stick pans, and it heats up evenly and fairly quickly. You remove the top section to wash, and it is easy to clean. The mechanism has a nice clear "dial" that you use to set up temperature you want. Really, it is well made little electric machine.

Nice product
Have used this numerous times since I bought it in October 2013. Heats evenly; something you can't find in many other pans like this. I find it easy to simmer and keep food warm when you're not quite ready to serve it. Steams vegetables to perfection. When I cook rice dishes using the prescribed cooking time; it comes out wonderful. No problem to clean and I'm being very careful with the utensils I use with it just like you would with any nonstick cookware. I think it will last a long time, good thing too, because it was expensive.

Can't do without it.
This is my second one; the nonstick finish on the first one finally gave out and since they had upgraded to this new model I could not get a replacement. I was a little annoyed with that as the heating unit was still working fine so I wasn't going to get this one . . . but I missed it too much. I use this for just about everything and this new one has some very useful features: 2 pans, a deep one and a shallow one and it has a steamer insert too. I did have the other one for a number of years, if this one holds up that well, I'll be happy. I'll be even happier if I can get a replacement when/if the non-stick finish goes on this one.

Easy to clean and makes perfect soup every time
I can't live without this thing. I sit in front of my laptop and eat soup right out of the skillet. Easy to clean and makes perfect soup every time!

You get what you pay for
If you're looking for a cheap, single-function skillet, this isn't it. It's awesome. The cost? One that reviewers haven't liked is the weight. Duh ... A quality product that will last should have some. This thing is beautiful, and obviously well thought out. When I was shopping, I read all sorts of reviews, and the complaints some had were stupid. They didn't read the manual. EVERY single complaint, other than weight and initial cost was wrong. The pan isn't flat? One is. The storage directions are "too complicated." If you're going to put the thing into storage, then make the effort to see that it is done right; but, why put it into "storage mode" if it's something you're going to use regularly? The Zojirushi is beautiful. It is well-designed for many different functions. It's not just a round electric skillet with a flat bottom. Take the time to learn how each of the pans was designed to be used and realize you have much more than that, but several different appliances. Stick with what you know, or use it set up in ways new to you and expand your skill. It really is well-designed and looks great. The initial cost seems high, and this isn't for you if you are looking for a cheap, disposable product that will fail if used heavily. This product will last a lifetime if taken care of. I know there are higher-end traditional electric skillets that can also make that claim, but I don't really want to look at a grease-stained, or over-scoured thing for years. I've been there and done that. Here, the pans are removed from the really great base. One real selling point, and the reason I didn't get the smaller unit, is the EP-RAC50's ability to heat to 480 F. I couldn't find another unit that would give that desirable high temp. A few reviewers got a defective unit. Why complain and not make use of the awesome warranty? Too bad they don't tell you you to pronounce Zojirushi. Easy to find this out with Google or Bing. I do wish they'd do more with their recipe book, more American, Southwest, and other examples. This would be a really worthwhile enhancement. One final note. One doesn't expect it to have been made in America. It seems everything is made in mainland China today, and I thought this would be a quality Japanese product. But it is made in China.... BUT wait, it's made in a wholly Zojirushi-owned factory. They're not sub-contracting to the cheapest firm and are likely to be responsible employers. Japanese production, like that in the US would jump the price considerably. Too bad Apple and all those designer clothes brands don't take the same approach.
