Fresh wheat berries for my birds
I've found red wheat berries at organic food stores, Whole Foods, etc., for anywhere between $2.75 to $4 a pound and I never knew how fresh the product was. These wheat berries are fresh and come with a "best used by" date. I mix wheat berries with long grain rice to cook and feed my cockatiels. They love this brand of berries; they have rejected other berries - usually wheat I bought from bulk containers. Now I only feed them this brand. (Just received my second 5 pound bag!)

Wonderful stuff!
Especially for bread, hard red is just the ticket. These gorgeous berries come from right here in Washington State, from the Palouse specifically, the Heart of Washington wheat country. And talk about transparency, there's nothing you could want or need to know that the growers don't tell you when you buy their stuff. So, not only is it grown right in every sense of the word, it's flat out delicious. Flour ground from this in your own home will open your eyes to whole new world, Andy that's no exaggeration - It's heavenly, and once you try it, you'll never go back to store bought. With equivalent quality flour from a local mill costing almost $9 a pound, this is a decent bargain as well.

FIVE STARS!
I bought this wheat because we make a ton of homemade bread and I wanted to put my Vitamix to work and try grinding these fresh. The Vitamix processed these into flour very fast and the dough rose extremely well. I was able to make the best wheat bread I have ever tasted. I can't say I have ever had bread that was as delicious. It made me realize that store bought bread and flour has literally NO flavor and people have just become accustomed to it. We made some more bread to bring over to Dad on Father's Day and everyone was blown away. It's very hard to explain the flavor but it was rich, complex and the bread was so soft that it absorbed butter like a sponge. I will never make white bread again, and I will be ordering this product in 50 pound bags from now on.

Wheat grass for green smoothies
I'd been trying to find wheat to grow in small trays for the purpose of the grass to be used in smoothies and had little luck. However, when purchasing some Palhouse Brand garbanzo beans, I noticed this product as well. This has an excellent sprout ratio and my first sprouts were visible in about 10 days in my inside tray. The first harvest was ready about 7 days later and I've found that it's got about a 5 day regeneration period. In other words, I make my cuttings and 5 days later I can make a second cutting. The third cutting came about 8 days later, and the final was just pulled up from the roots and ground whole. For planting purposes I acquired Soil Moist pellets that absorb water and release it as necessary and just mixed the wheat seed with it after soaking it overnight. Doing it that way allowed me to have the seed constantly have moisture available and in contact without dealing with washing soil off the roots at the end. The Soil Most was then rehydrated and used with the next batch.

Wheat Berry Goodness
I love the crunch, the extra bit of texture that wheat berries can add to certain foods. They also make a tasty hot cereal on their own--add a touch of margarine and honey; maybe some dried fruit. Yum. As for the wheat berries from Palouse, I am very impressed. (I've been impressed with everything that I've bought from Palouse but that's another review.) While I haven't gone over every berry with a fine tooth comb, I can say that these are the cleanest, tightest whole wheat berries that I've purchased. They cook up like a dream: 2 to 2 1/2 hours in a slow cooker on high. Some people pre-soak the berries before cooking; I do not. I want my berries to maintain a bit of chew. Into the slow cooker: 1 cup wheat berries, sorted and rinsed 3 to 4 cups water; start with 3 1 to 2 pinches salt I set my slow cooker at high for 2 hours. I check the berries at about 1 1/2 hours and, if neccessary, I add another cup of water. I check the berries again when the timer goes off. If the berries are not done to my liking, I set the time for another 30 minutes to an hour and add water if it's needed. Once the berries have cooked, I let them cool in the pot. Once they are cool, I package them into re-sealable plastic bags in 1/2 cup servings. I also package one in a 1 cup serving for that breakfast treat. How do I use the wheat berries? I add them to soups, to rice and especially to oatmeal. I like to cook about a week's worth of steel-cut oats at one time in the slow cooker. When I do this, I add 1/2 cup raw wheat berries to 1 1/2 cup steel-cut oats. I start out with 4 cups water and add more as needed, cooking for about 2 to 2 1/2 hours, on high, or 2 1/2 to 3 hours on low. June 9, 2013, Update: I forgot to mention that this wheat makes lovely sprouts. June 11, 2013, Update: This five pound bag of wheat berries fits very nicely in a Snapware MODS Medium Rectangle Storage Container 17 Cups. (No, I don't work for Snapware but it was challenge trying to figure out how to store all of my new goodies without resorting to the bucket with a gamma lid that I use for the 20 lbs of soybeans that I purchase directly from a farm.)

I USED TO SHUN WHEAT
I have avoided natural WHOLE wheat for a very long time. 30 years easily. Not because of digestion issues, but because of the taste. My first encounter with the "funny brown" bread took place in W.Canada (the plains) I was but a child. So the folks we were staying with only served this bread and it was DELICIOUS. OK,back to the USA, and we never saw this brown wheat bread in any of the stores. So we ate Silver Cup white bread /Levy's Rye for what seemed forever........until you move out and discover other kinds of bread. As years went by, more wheat products were available to the American family. I have tried in the past to eat supermarket/bakery wheat bread, wheat pita, wheat rolls , and found it tasteless. So do the birds. I have noticed many times that when I throw another wheat product outside for the birds they do NOT EAT it?? But, throw out some cheap white bread, they fight for it ?? I recently purchased an out of print health book and the good Doctor within wholeheartedly advocated the use of old fashioned wheat for health, vitality and as a source of natural B complex. I found his take on this biblical grain to be solid and factual. I searched on Amazon for a source of Non-GMO wheat berries. Okay, do not laugh but I live on the Plains of Kansas. Wheat country, yet I chose to purchase wheat berries online. I am VERY HAPPY that I chose this brand, delivery was quick, preparation is not difficult( there is a lot online for recipes ) and the wheat is absolutely delicious, with a fresh nutty? taste. I would like to add that the product was FRESH, not overly dusty and quite free of debris. Feed your family whole wheat and reap the benefits.

I LOVE Palouse Brand!
These wheat berries are so versatile: sprout 'em, grind 'em, or pop 'em, they taste great no matter how you prepare them! I am so happy with this product! In addition to these hard red wheat berries, I have bought soft white wheat berries, split peas, lentils and garbanzo beans and I've enjoyed them all. The quality is exceptional and the taste, wonderful! Grown in America and Non-GMO is a major plus and I've raved about Palouse Brand to all my friends and family - I really love this family-owned company and I feel that they deserve a glowing review!

Wheat berry tabouleh
Okay, it’s basically a commodity. But it does come in a cool burlap sack and is great quality. Cheaper than the ridiculous 12 ounce bags at the chain grocery stores. I use this for wheat berry tabouleh. 2 2/3 cups cooked and chilled wheat berry, 3/4 cup chopped tomato, 3/4 cup chopped cucumber, 1/2 cup fresh snipped Italian parsley, 1/4 cup thin sliced green onions, 1 tablespoon snipped mint, 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (or light olive oil) 3 tablespoons lemon juice, salt. Mix it all together, chill and serve.

Grind Wheat Berries for Perfectly Delicious Bread Machine Loaves
We recently lost a local source for hard red spring berries used to make our weekly whole wheat loaf. So happy to have found Palouse Brand Non-GMO Hard Red Spring Wheat Berries on Amazon. And the option to subscribe and save! These berries produce consistently delicious loaves with a beautiful texture and flavor. It is possible to produce a chemical free healthy and delicious loaf of bread in that old bread machine taking up space in your garage. So important to grind your own flour because the wheat germ oil is highly perishable and with exposure to air, becomes rancid very quickly. So grind the berries into flour right before baking with a grinder attachment on a standing mixer. Bread Machine Magic has a good whole wheat recipe that will take some experimentation to get the ingredient balance just right. The kind of what berries matter and these ones are recommended. Now go make some bread!
