Excellent quality
Palouse Brand has been my go-to for garbanzo beans for a number of years. I decided to try their lentils. Also delicious. I like the idea of supporting local (Washington) farmers when I can. These cook up in no time on the stovetop or instant pot. In fact, it is a good day for lentil soup so I think I'll put a pot on.

Little Brown Lentils Are Very Good And They Sprout!
I'm accustomed to the ordinary lentils that you find at most grocery stores. They are good but these are wonderful! I'm no expert but these were surprisingly tiny lentils; actually cute. Most importantly they cook fast and are delicious. They have a hearty earthy flavor just like most lentils but more so. I have always made all kinds of soup with lentils. The timing of getting your other ingredients cooked, broccoli, mushrooms, eggplant etc. and the lentils cooked soft is key. You want to saute any vegetables then add rinsed (and soaked if you want to initiate some sprouting for health) lentils and water (or tomato sauce and water). So, I tested the little lentils for sprout-ability. I just took 5 lentils that had fallen on the counter by accident and put them into a shot glass (on top of a bit of damp paper towel which I kept lightly damp throughout the experiment). I kept the glass in the medium light of my kitchen window. The first few days I thought that they might be duds but then some little white sprouts emerged sort of worm like. All five lentils sprouted with great vigor lol. In a few more days they were pretty green shoots. Anyhow, the claim that they will sprout is TRUE. I also found the very plot of land that my Pardina lentils were grown on by scanning with my eldest son's smart phone. That was pretty cool! The Palouse is land made rich by pre historic floods which deposited soil from hundreds of miles away there. I believe that that sort of deposit is called alluvial. My family and I are very impressed by these tasty little lentils and, although they are somewhat more expensive than the lentils at WINCO, they are cheap for the food value you get; the assurance that your lentils are viable not irradiated and that they are grown in rich soils with care! Plus, for me in Vancouver, WA., they are pretty local.

UPDATE I LOVE these lentils
I LOVE these lentils! It must be the first time I get to taste lentils as fresh and savory as these! I made some soup and lentil patties! I really hope I don’t run out of them too soon! I ordered the garbanzo beans and I’m sure I will not be disapointed! I’m a vegan and I really have an appreciation for fresh and savory legumes! I’m just disappointed I didn’t know about these lentils sooner! I received another shipment of a 25lb bag last week and I decided to make some soup today! The weather has been very cold! I had some farm fresh corn and I added it to the soup! The soup broth was so delicious! I can't possibly even consider buying any other type of lentils! I'm so lucky I came across these on Amazon! Trust me these lentils can't compare to anything out there! This company takes a lot of pride in their products and the taste is the end result of their efforts! I will definitely continue to purchase from Palouse Brand!

Best tasting lentils!
Bought first of these lentils as a 5 lb, 3 pack on May 20, 2017. Didn't get to eat any of them, because my mice really liked them a lot (soaked). I was so pleased they finally liked a lentil, that their mix got all the lentils. (Dry legumes for mice are not a good idea, imo, but their mix is soaked/sprouted before feeding.) Finally got to eat these myself when I started ordering the 25 lb bags. Pretty seriously high taste expectations, based on how my mice pounced on these lentils, and how lovely they looked, but I was still blown away! Fantastic flavor! I eat these every day now. My husband, who "doesn't like lentils", had a small sample one evening recently, and came back again for a larger serving. Ha! I would greatly prefer it if this company ever figured out a way to grow their legumes without herbicides, and such, but for now these are what all lentil eating beings in my household will not give up. It's clear they are trying to do things they feel are better, such as no-till (which I also do), and other practices mentioned on their website. Love that they are non-irradiated, so I can sprout these too. Perhaps with more space, I will try to grow some. I doubt I have enough room, even after clearing more space, to keep up with the quantity eaten here. Packaging for the 5 lb 3 pack is a plastic bag (rinse, dry and deposit at plastic film drop off points) inside a nice reusable bags (better than many burlap bags). The 25 lb bags are just thick opaque plastic.

Irresistible AMBROSIA
Best lentils ever! I've added these to every single meal since they arrived 5 days ago. They're not like any lentil I've ever had. (& I love lentils--but I go crazy for these.) They are exquisite, delicious, nourishing, sattvic & indescribably unique. As my better half noted, "these have a lot of good flavor!" (& that was without any spices--just rice & veggies--well maybe a bit of turmeric). If you're tempted to try these--don't hesitate. Mostly I want to thank the kindness of the folks at Palouse for making these rare gems available & the other reviewers for sharing their experiences. I had no idea this ambrosia existed. I have plenty of red & green lentils in the pantry, so I almost didn't get these in the first place. I'm so glad I availed myself & have already placed a second order. I intend to have these on hand for the duration. Thanks again & best wishes on your chosen path!

Excellent!
These are excellent lentils, from a great agricultural area. I've been to the Palouse several times, a wonderful, amazingly beautiful region of rolling green farmland in eastern Washington/northern Idaho, famous for photography, rich soil, and, well, lentils. They even have a lentil festival every August, no kidding. When I saw these lentils on Amazon I had to try them - I belong to Amazon Prime, get free two-day shipping - and they are excellent. Like others say, they are small, firm, and really flavorful. They take more time and water to cook than most other kinds of lentils I've used due to their firmness, but retain their shape really well. They are also chewy, not mushy, and the flavor is kind of nutty. You can do anything you want with them - make curry, soup, salad, mix them with rice or quinoa or chopped veggies, season them any way you like. I love lentils in general, other faves are red lentils (sweet and mushy, make great soup) and black lentils (tiny and round, and a great alternative to black beans) which I can get at local health food stores, but these are truly top shelf, and I've never seen them in stores. I agree with what someone else said, too, they are very clean, I haven't found any rocks or twigs in them. Just great lentils. I'm ordering a five pound bag this time so I can have them on hand for awhile - and I love knowing I'm supporting a great gem of a growing region by buying them.

wonderful chewy lentils
I really liked these lentils and shared them with 2 other friends so we needed another bag right away, we make soup, 1 1/2 cups lentils cup up veggies from the fridge, zukes, carrots, celery, broccoli, start with lots of rough chopped garlic and onions add veggies and lentils and 4 cups broth simmer about 20 25 min veggies will still be crunchy and lentils chewy (can top with browned butter mixed with curry) can blend with hand held blender or not soup is excellent hot or cold

I have discovered that sprouted lentils are a great treat to eat
I purchase these for sprouting. I have discovered that sprouted lentils are a great treat to eat. They are much more yummy than the cooked ones. They take only 4 days to sprout. These seeds were nice and viable and sprouted right on schedule. They came in this neat bag and were well worth the cost of purchase. I also liked the fact that they were grown in the US in Washington State and that they are organic and not irradiated or treated in any way. They were quite clean and did not need constant rinsing. Just for fun for the next reader I will post how I sprout them. I soak them for 8 hours 1/2 cup of lentils to a quart of water. Then I drain them and rinse them a couple of times in a quart jar with tiny plastic screening rubber banded over the opening. I leave the jar on its side and continue to rinse them every time I pass the sink by -- about 2 times a day. On day 2 you will notice the sprouts appearing on them. By day 4 they are good and ready to eat. Sprinkle on salads, top soups, or eat by the handful as a snack. I keep them in the fridge in a ziploc bag with a bounty towel folded in the bottom.

Great Product
This is the second time I’ve order. The first was a while ago (2 years I think?). The first order lasted until now and the only reason it took so long for me to use them was that I thought they had to be soaked over night and I never really has the time to do that and forgot about them. Recently, I was cleaning out my pantry and found them again and decided I would try just making some soup quickly with them by throwing them in a pot with water to see if they would cook up well without soaking. Well, they did and I used them up in a couple of months. I’m attaching a recipe I created, really simple, using just water and some fresh sautéed garlic and onion to create an earthy broth from the brown lentils.

I don't worry about storage
The offer of information about storage made me laugh. 5 pounds of these lentils doesn't last me long enough to be concerned about storage. I really like these lentils and make a stew with them every week or so. I alternate them with other kinds of dahl. Thanks for a good breakfast! Yes, I bought them again and plan to continue to do so. These are so much better than the big green lentils that are at my local store--and those are not bad, just not something to rave about.
