I tested it by putting it behind my vehicle's muffler. It passed with flying colors. I bought the First Alert CO615 before this and also tested all 5 of them by putting it behind my car's muffler. The First Alert CO615 failed miserably. I almost past out and it still has not gone off. All 5 of them failed. I returned it back to Amazon and bought these. You do need to replace it after 7 yrs of use like most of these. I write the date to replace on top of unit with a permanent marker to reminds myself when to replace. It Works great, easy to install, does not require plug in therefore you can install it a bit higher.

Excellent Features
I purchased this CM detector because an older, different maker's model had reached its 7-year life. I have 4 others of this same Kidde brand and model. I like the ability to view and read the the CM number at a glance when passing by the detector. I also like the detector's features: a button you can press to check the peak reading with a backlight, and another button can be pressed to test the systerm. I like the green light that flashes every minute to show that the detector is operating. With the press of another button, the alarm can be tested to be sure it goes off, and believe me, it is extremely loud. I also like the compact size and appearance which is not intrusive with your decor. I couldn't find this detector at my local home improvements stores, so I purchased it on Amazon. The delivery time was 2 days from date of order. You can't beat that for service. All in all, I would recommend this CM detector. I have 5 total: bedrooms, kitchen area, family room.

Ever since we have it in the house we feel a little saver. I research ratings of products before I buy, who would not? So before something comes thru the door I all ready know something about it. This Detector- alarm is great and here is why. We have ours just sitting on a kitchen shelf and in the warmer months every once in a while we got low readings on the Alarm like 10 to 15 and I reset it. When it got colder it did not happen any more. Until last week we got a reading of 13. That's when I made the connection with the door to the garage. We have an attached garage and my daughter went back in the house to get something, while the vans motor was running and she left the door open for a few minutes. Since this alarm remembers the reading we made the connection. She all ways forgets something and in warmer weather leaves the door open often.

Great Quality
Even though carbon monoxide detectors are required in CA our house is old and we had never purchased one. Then my daughter's family were awakened in the middle of the night by their detectors going off and they were unable to go back into their house until their furnace was repaired. They all could have died that night. This detector has a numerical read out that luckily is showing zero and a green flashing light. I feel very secure with it.

Easy
I replaced a CO Alarm by the same company that was 10 years old, and needed a replacement. Because the company has made a consistent design, I was able to just slip the old one off of its bracket, and slip the new one onto the same bracket. Could not have been easier. Thanks, Kidde, but making it easy to replace this, as per directions.

Digital readout is nice - CO lighter than air
I purchased a Kidde KN-COPP-B-LS Nighthawk CO alarm Dec. 17, 2011. I chose this model because of the digital display with backlight, and battery power. The one I received had a manufactured date of Feb. 26, 2011. When examining the package, I heard a rattling noise, so I thought it might be damaged. However, the noise is from the front panel control buttons. The included Duracell batteries were fresh, expiring 2017. The battery compartment cover acts as a wall mounting plate. The unit is free standing, so you can put it on a nightstand. When placed on a tabletop, the instructions state: no more than three feet from the floor. The alarm automatically expires 7 years from first power on. The alarm is loud. The device seems durable, and no false alarms. The max reading so far has been 13, with the unit in the basement. I'm happy with it. I had thought that carbon monoxide was much heavier than air, and that a CO detector should be mounted low. However, CO is very slightly lighter than air. The directions suggest mounting the unit at eye level (for easy reading), or placing it on a table top. Either way, it should be in a location where air movement is not blocked by anything.

Kidde is the best. PPM display is important to me.
As an installer, I can attest Kidde saves me time because they get all the little things right with the mounting hardware, etc. PPM display is important to me because if the alarm should ever sound, the first thing I'm going to do is read the display. Then I am going to open a door or a window and see if the display changes appropriately. And if not, I am going to replace the unit as faulty and not let the alarm disrupt my life. After shutting off the gas, I hope to be able to move the unit toward the source and locate the leak. So having the display gives me options.

Very nice
Very nice units. These two units replaced the same model numbered units I had. These newer units have a 10 year life whereas the older units had a 7 year life. Small, not ugly, the readout is important to me, work as specified... well they test correctly per specifications as we've had no CO leaks here... of that I am sure.

Long Lasting Alarm
I purchased 3 Kidde Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarms with Digital Display to replace three that reached end of life this past week. I can't tell you how long I had the last three, because it's been so many years that I can't remember! The alarms are small, loud, easy to set up, and last a long time. Recommended.

Watch Out For the Non-Backlighted Version
There are two almost identical versions of these: But not quite. KN-COPP-B-LS which has LCD back-lighting KN-COPP-B-LP which does NOT have LCD back-lighting You need to get the one with back-lighting. Look at it this way: If you are going to be the most susceptible to possible high carbon monoxide levels outside of normal living conditions, it will likely be during a power outage (or worse) and will be while using alternative heating such as a fireplace, kerosine, etc. Conditions will likely be dark in your dwelling. If you get the NON back-lighted LCD you will also need to find a light source (matches) to read the detector to check the CO trend levels, or wait until it is too late (alarm condition) to deal with things effectively. Easy way to check - Look to see if there is a "Peak Level/Backlight" label (versus just "Peak Level") just below the lower half-round button to the left of the LCD. Or the good one says "Easy to See in the Dark" through the blister package. I just bought the properly back lighted version from Amazon (I hope) because Home Depot sold both with no difference in price or SKU number. They also just ran out of the good one! Remember it this way: -LS= "Lighting See", -LP= "Lighting Poor". So there. ~ Update 01/12/2012: Well! Amazon did manage to send exactly the wrong one ... the -LP "Lighting Poor" version. To return this worthless thing will cost me more in gas to drive a 30 mile round trip than it is worth and cost them me as a customer. Beware, folks! I will just attach a string to it taped to a strike-match pack to see and test it all at once.
