I was going to say that simple ideas that work are often the best. But the more I use this, the more I realize it is only simple in how easily it helps to open lids. The concepts for how and why it works are complex and the designers accurately hit the mark. This jar opener just plain works great. I figured the circular base gripper was probably more for eye candy but even that does it's job much better than I imagined it would. The arrow to show the proper opening direction is a great addition. This jar opener is strong and sturdy. It is heavy enough to do the job but not so heavy as to be cumbersome. You can set it on the lid so that you either push it away or pull it toward you. So if you have finger, hand or wrist problems you can use the direction that is best for you. I very highly recommend this jar opener. It is well worth the small cost.

I've ordered at least 5 other jar openers of various types. Most require you to squeeze and they give additional leverage, but even though I have a strong grip, they always slip. Since was looking for an opener for my parent with arthritis, they were all a waste of money. Not this one. High quality, and excellent construction. The teeth on the grabbers never slip. Just slide it over the lid and then you have the leverage to open your jar/bottle. This is a great product, and the only one I found that actually works for someone who has a hard time with gripping lids to open. Just as if you were to open a metal lidded jar by hand, if you tap on the edge with the back of a knife to break the seal, you should do so with this too to make for the easiest (and safest) jar/bottle lid removal.

Based on all the selections I found for jar openers, I believe I made the best choice available. My wife and I both have arthritis in our hands and can barely open a .5 liter bottle of water, let alone a tightly vacuum sealed jar of sauce or sauerkraut. The rubbery disc included makes it even easier to hold the jar on the counter, preventing the need to use additional gripping force on the really tight jars. I might add that the tool is fairly heavy, making it somewhat clumsy feeling at first but with a little practice, you'll barely notice. The handle is thick, so you'll need a longer and straighter hook than most kitchen racks provide. I put a loop of stiff twine instead. There's a saw-toothed blade on one side that digs into the top edge of the lid, while a rubber strip applies friction on the opposite side. I have noticed that the saw-teeth will indent or mark the lids, especially plastic and really tight metal ones. Also, if the lid has a large radius along the top edge, it tends to slip off as the teeth are close to the top edge. Make sure the tool rests flat on top of the lids to get the best results. The description says "all jar sizes" but actually ranges from 3/4 to 4 in (19 to 102 mm) in diameter. We liked it enough to buy another for my wife's 80+ year old mother. Hope she can use it!

I have a terrible time opening some jars. This opener makes it so much easier. The included rubber mat ensures the jar does not slip while opening. The opener can accommodate jar lids from very small condiment up to wide mouth pickle jars. The teeth bite into the lid securely and the handle gives good leverage when turning. I can't comment on durability as I have only had it a few weeks.

Weirdest looking jar opener i've ever seen. But it was cheap and had tons of positive reviews. I've never had a problem with this jar opener. Most of the time, I can open jars without needing the base pad. Every once in a while, I'll find a stubborn jar that needs extra grip...pull out the base pad and it opens easily. seems easy enough to use, but there are a fair amount of 1-star reviews from customers who say this thing is horrible. not sure why the reviews/experiences are so different. worked great for me and I would definitely buy another one if I needed to.

I got this for my 85 year old dad and he loves it. His arthritic hands and weakened grip prevented him from opening even simple juice bottles. As a result, he would use a heavy monkey wrench as a make-shift jar opener. I'm very happy to say that the OXO jar opener works very well for him. It is substantial enough for him to hold in his large, clumsy, shaky hands, without being too heavy or awkward. (It isn't too big for smaller hands.) One note: It comes with a rubber pad for placing under the jar to hold it in place. This works like a charm. However, the opener didn't come with any instructions for what to do with the rubber pad (at least none large enough for my father to read), so the rubber pad was a source of confusion for him. A clear, easy to understand image of how to use the opener, large enough for elderly eyes, would be a nice addition to the tag. Soon after getting this for Dad, I was struggling to open a jar (without this jar opener) and the jar flew off the counter, shattering glass and contents across my kitchen floor. After seeing how well this opener worked for Dad, I got one for myself and have been very happy with it. Now, I have just purchased a third one for my sister. She is currently weakened by a cold and is unable to open a water bottle. This will definitely help her with that. I'm also going to get one for Mom.

I use this jar opener all the time. Included is a little silicon round that stores with the jar opener, take it out and you know have a great grip on the bottom of the jar, so clever. The opener itself fits a wide variety of sizes from small caper jars to large pickle and jam jars. The grip holds strong without scraping or damaging the metal of the lid, so you don't have rough patches to scrape your hands on later. I can get a really good grip and open the jar easily, without much had or arm strength, then this stores very easily in a drawer, it lays flat, or you can hang it with the hole in the handle. The oxo jar opener is very well made, good grip, well thought out, and a real help in the kitchen.

Got this because OT said a jar opener would save me wear and tear on the joints in my hands, and this one was mentioned in an article from The Mighty. I like it! It works great on everything from giant pickle jars to little water bottle lids. The only thing you really have to work to open is a lid that's still sealed (found that out with a new jelly jar the other day). It's not as heavy as it looks in the picture, believe me, and though the handle looks short, it's plenty for any size hand. I like this one's design that puts the "stress" on your wrist when you turn the whole opener, rather than turning a little dial like other models I've seen (if I could turn a dial, I could open a jar..). Overall, it's great!

Our goto opener that fits all jar tops because of its triangular design. Sturdy with comfortable rubber grip. Still requires some strength to hold jar and apply pressure with the other hand. The circular plastic mat is handy to cushion the glass jar on hard granite counter surface. As we get older our grip strength weakens and jars like spaghetti sauce or pickles etc. become more challenging. My wife brings them to me. I can grimace and get the job done but this one opener is an easier solution for both of us.

This jar opener is a must-have as far as I'm concerned. I used to be the go-to guy for opening jars. These days, however, I'm finding that my grip just isn't what it used to be and I can't open half the jars I'm given. Enter this jar opener. It's very simple to use and works every time. You place the non-slip disk on the counter, put the jar on top of it, and then place the jar opener over the lid of the jar. Twist the jar lid open with the handle...very little effort involved. It's physics! So easy to use even my mother can open those pesky jars.
