I'll agree with the reviews who found this to be a 'lightweight' canner. It's not a heavy-duty thing, by any means. The wire lift-basket inside did show signs of rust at the first use, and the enamel coating has sharp spots on the edges of the lid, handles, etc. However, for the price, this is a great choice for a beginner. If you're new to canning and just want to try the process out without investing a fortune, this kit has everything you need. Newbies, or anyone who only cans a dozen or so jars per year, this is the way to go. Someone planning to do lots of canning, year after year, will probably be happier if they invest in something heavy-duty, but this is a perfectly good kit for someone who is just starting out (or who can't afford a fancier set-up).

I am new to canning and decided this year I really needed to get a kit that would help me sterilize the jars properly. I didn't have anything big enough or with a basket, or anything to properly hold the jars, so this was perfect. It has all the parts I need and the price was great. The size is excellent to fit in enough to let me do what I want, and fits on the stove nicely with my other pots. I really like the jar grabber that lets me grip the jars safely to remove them or move them around while they are hot, and I like the surface of the pot. I have hard water and if I boil much of anything it leaves a calcium or mineral residue, and it can be a bit difficult to clean off of some surfaces. The enamel surface on the pot lets me almost just wipe it right off. I don't have to scrub hard or use any harsh pads or abrasives. The colander is very nice and has handles that are perfect for sitting it in the pot I pour my finished product in prior to my final cooking. The handles let it sit on the edge of the pot without falling in, which makes things much easier for me. When you are handling large, heavy, hot items that can be time sensitive, any little benefit at all can be huge. This kit really helps provide those advantages to make your canning experience so much easier and smoother. As a newbie to canning, I couldn't have asked for a better kit than this. My first use of it was to can some delicious cinnamon apple jelly that turned out just amazing. My kids love it and will actually have toast and jelly for dessert! When you can do something like that for your kids, it's such a good feeling, and my Granite Ware helped me deliver that. If you are getting into canning, or just need new pieces for your existing canning kit, then this is well worth the minimal price you will pay for it. So far, the quality has been excellent and I have had zero issues with rust, wear, anything falling apart, or generally not working the way it's supposed to. After about 4 uses so far, it still looks almost new.

I have been canning up a storm since I bought this. I remember my grandmother canning fresh produce for her garden as a child. I decided to make canned goods to give as Christmas presents this year and to learn a new skill. So far I've made jalapeño jelly, fresh cherry jam, glaze for meat or poultry with jalapeños, pineapple, mango, cherries, red pepper flakes...can also be poured on cream cheese to serve with crackers, dilly beans - pickled Greaney beans with fresh dill and garlic and dill pickles. The kit has everything you need to get started. I did find it easier and safer to use BBQ silicone gloves to handle the hot jars. I highly recommend this set, it's a great price point and well made. Fantastic for the beginner. Having so much fun, felt like Grandma was with me in spirit.

Canning is a relatively new hobbie for me and my 14-year-old daughter. In the past, we’ve fumbledwith DIY racks, kitchen tongs and all the wrong tools. This year, as we prepared for our county youth fair and preparing her award winning salsa, we opted to purchase canning equipment to cutdown on frustration and guesswork. This was the perfect solution! Not only is this kit a low-price solution, it also contains all the tools needed to canning. It was easy and safe enough for my daughter to work with independently. I’m very pleased and look forward to using this kit frequently.

This is a nice kit. We are novice canners and this is the first we have done. Everything was there that we needed to start canning. The description says that it includes; "5 pc tool set: a lid wrench that easily opens screw-on jar caps; a funnel that fits both regular and wide-mouth jars; a pair of tongs, a jar lifter, and a magnetic lid lifter to safely remove hot jars and lids after they've been sterilized in boiling water. All tools come with coated ends for secure grip. " Mine had the (1) Funnel (2) jar lifter (3) Magnetic lid lifter It DID NOT INCLUDE (4) lid wrench (5) tongs One other thing to note. Do not leave the chrome plated jar rack in the water even over night. We finished late and were going to start again early the next morning. During a short sleep this did start to rust immediately at the wire intersection seams.

I considered buying just the canner but decided to purchase the whole set. I am very pleased that I did. All of the elements are of high quality and all are part of making canning easier and safer. Both my mother and my grandmother canned with one of these and now it it my turn. When I retired last year I promised myself I would put food up this summer. It has been 50 years since I canned with my mother and grandmother but with this great black pot it all came back. I cannot promise everyone will remember canning if you get this pot but if you remember someone else canning or if you canned yourself in the past, take it up again. The cost of the pot is easily amortized across the savings on food. I thought perhaps I would just make do with what I had, and I considered buying just the pot but I am very glad I got the whole set. I have used all of the utensils and am very pleased with how sturdy they are. I had worried that they would not hold up to hard use but mine are 60 quarts in and going strong. I have also used the blanching pot to cook beets and for blanching peaches and tomatoes for easy pealing. I also use the blanching pot to keep hot water available to ladle into the big canner when I am processing a long time and the water level is going down. That way I can put hot water into the pot and not stop its boil. I have to give a gold star to the blanching pot. I was weary canning and put my pot on high to start the water boiling and did not put any water in it. When I realized it I thought for sure the pot was a goner. The paint changed color a bit but the pot survived and I turned off everything on the stove and went to take a nap! I have not used the colander but I already had a number of them. This one is nice since it does not have any handles it will fit in a smaller sink which helps with washing and the cold water bath when blanching.

This is not my first Granite Ware canner but I was pleased to find the quality comparable to my 20 year old one! (they just don't make things like they used to!) At first I was put off by the price, but after some research realized I wasn't going to find a better deal on a new one, especially with all the accessories and free shipping. It also meant I didn't have to actually go into WalMart or Meijer! I LOVE the colander and REALLY like the skinny spatula and magnetized lid tool! I have not had any of the issues mentioned in some of the other reviews regarding rusting, chipping, etc. My arrived in perfect condition and has survived one canning session to date. Recommended for either the newbie or experienced preserver. I would suggest ordering BEFORE your harvest hits....my original anticipated ship date was 2 months from the order date! Thankfully it arrived within 2 weeks.

So glad I ordered this. A little back round, I am a chef at a conference center and I have a 85ftX85ft organic garden and boy oh boy let me tell you this year I was swimming in produce. I had no idea where to put these 200 lbs + tomatoes or cucumber or eggplant etc etc etc so I thought why not preserve them. So I did some pretty extensive research and thought this would be the best bang for my buck........... 60 jars later this is still easy enough to pump out mass quantities while have all the equipment needed right out of the box............ GREAT DEAL !!

Everything you need for canning and more. I've use this product half a dozen times now and is perfect for the average canner. The only downside to this product is the metal grate that you place into the pot. It rusts fairly easily and has to be removed and dried from the water immediately. Other than that, perfect!

Ok so I waited to use this before reviewing. I didn't notice the warning message until after I purchased this but it said no glass top stoves. Well I gave it a try anyway. And it worked great! The tools in the 9 piece set are essential and the pan is huge so lots of cans can fit. I'm extremely happy with its performance so far. And as I said above it does work with a glass top stove! Atleast mine it did
