... fire pit for a family party and it was perfect! Deep enough for a good size fire
I purchased this fire pit for a family party and it was perfect! Deep enough for a good size fire. The design of the wall allows heat to radiate outwards (it has wire mesh so it makes it quite safe). We set it on the patio and dampened the grass near it plus dampened hay bales the day before party. I put sand in the bottom per recommendation of another buyer. We love it. The family had a great time.

I've very happy with this cauldron
I've very happy with this cauldron. It's hefty and the perfect size -- I filled the base with sand up to an inch or two below the grid openings (probably more sand than I needed), and I can still easily fit probably 6 or 7 full-size logs without going over the top. Setup was also easy -- just a bit of muscle required to attach the legs. Essential tips: get a high-temperature, rust-resistant black spray paint and give the whole cauldron a couple coats, then fill the base with playground sand. Also, get a cover and keep it covered whenever the pit's not in use (this one fits perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0030T13G8/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3). I followed this advice from other posters, and the cauldron still looks good as new after several fires and rainfalls.

Good durability, nice design.
Have had this for about a year. Used frequently in Florida and not taken care of in any significant fashion. Have had a few all day fires burning yard debris and this pit is still functional. Only parts that are starting to fail is the mesh that sits in the pit to make it so less falls out of the side holes. Some moderate rust but we have been using it frequently in an area that is near 100% humidity all the time. Much better longevity than we expected I will say. And we have had some hot fires, we often apply a leaf blower to the embers to see how hot we can get it, and quite a few times we have gotten portions of the pit redhot and it still seems to be structurally sound. I will buy another when this finally dies, but in an area where usual firepits last about a summer, I'm pleased to get more than a year.

We did as they recommended and padded sand to the bottom of the pit
EDIT 3/31/16*** I have had this fire pit about 2 weeks. I have had over 6 fires in it. Attaching the legs was not hard. The spark screen then included is relatively cheap, but would do the job. I don't think we will use it much. We did as they recommended and padded sand to the bottom of the pit. I would recommend others do the same was it insulates the bottom and allows things to settle. It is portable, but only around the yard. I wouldn't recommend for travel. I would buy this again, and recommend it to others. EDIT 3/31/16*** After a year or so of use, I am still happy with my purchase. I used an old grill cover for keeping it out of the rain, and put a 5gallon bucket under the grill cover, to create a "teepee" like look that directs water off of the tarp. Works well.

Hang out in the yard around a nice fire
I ordered this because it was inexpensive and could help us figure out where to put a permanent brick fire pit.3 years later it's still going strong with no maintenance other than using a plastic cover. We've used it several times per week 10 months/year. We actually like moving it around the yard to have a new fire pit setting every time. The brick fire pit plans have been scrapped sine this is working so well. When it first arrived it looked like it would not last, but it's still going strong after being fully exposed to 3 upstate NY winters. When it was new I put down a bed of sand and since have not cleaned out the ashes. The fires almost always burn completely leaving a thin layer of ash. After about 100 fires, the ash is not building up, so no need to clean it out. I never expected this fire pit to last and provide so many wonderful nights. Extremely pleased with this purchase. It's a wonderful, just get one.

A good fire pit that can be improved
--[ SEE UPDATES BELOW ]-- SUMMARY ( i ) a well designed, easy to use painted steel fire pit; ( ii ) there is an issue of quality control with the varying length of the manufacturer-installed screws to attach the cover guard supporting tabs; ( iii ) the unspecified type of steel remains unaffected by corrosion after being kept outdoors, under a plastic waterproof cover when not in use, for more than three years. REVIEW The fire pit arrived in a relatively large box weighing ca. 28 lbs/13 kg (gross). All the parts were protected in bubble wrap in well designed compartments. The user manual is clearly written in both English and Spanish. 1. Installation consists of attaching four legs at the bottom of the pit, and the spark guard-supporting tabs on the rim of the bowl. The legs were easy to install (an adjustable wrench is recommended but a socket ratchet set is better). Installing the guard-supporting tabs can be a different story, however, since there is poor quality control of the length of the threaded studs installed by the manufacturer to attach the tabs. The fire pit we received had one stud of reasonable length, but the other two were inconveniently short --see first figure-- and securing the nut on one of them was difficult. Tightening the pieces can scratch some of the surfaces of nuts, washers, and even the pitbowl itself. Out of an abundance of caution, I first painted all scratches with a coat of Rust-Oleum Automotive 248658 10-Ounce Rust Reformer Spray, Black and, after it dried, then with a coat of Rust-Oleum 7778830 High Heat Enamel Spray, Bar-B-Que Black, 12-Ounce to delay rust. 2. The fire pit comes with a long "multi-purpose" poker, made of two halves that screw together; one half has a hook, the other a handle shaped like a shepherd's staff with a rather tight hook. It is handy for lifting the spark-guard dome lid when hot as well as for poking the logs or embers. 3. The screen covering the sides of the pitbowl has openings of ca. 1/4"; plenty of ashes can be blown away if using bellows or with strong winds. The screen of the spark guard has smaller holes of about 1/8"; flames from big fires and small ashes (and even small sparks) can pass through. The unit we received does not have a perfectly round spark-guard dome, but it still fits inside the bowl on the supplied tabs. 4. The manufacturer recommends that 5 lbs of sand must be spread on the bottom of the pitbowl. This serves to protect the metal surface and extend the bowl's life, and to insulate from heat the area below the pit, but it makes difficult the removal of ashes. 5. The lower portion of the fire pit lacks a grate to support the wood. For us, placing a few _fire bricks_ on their side over the sand (with enough space to allow the flow of air under the burning wood) solved this limitation. 6. Like any other device to burn wood or charcoal, the fire pit produces carbon monoxide and can cause death if used in areas with poor ventilation. Play it safe. 7. Landmann-USA is located in Fairburn, GA. At the time of writing, their website had not yet implemented an on-line catalog service for parts replacement, but they can be ordered by chat, email, or phone. UPDATE 1 (March 2017) 8. After one summer and one fall of frequent use, and one winter of outdoors storage, the painted steel of the fire pit shows no signs of rust or the paint chipping off. When not in use, the fire pit has always been kept standing on four bricks and under a plastic waterproof cover (Landmann USA 29300 Big Sky Fire Pit Cover, 30-Inch Diameter, whose seams were sealed with 17-mil thick, high adhesion tape on the inside) to minimize water contact, as shown in the second figure. Since the elasticized skirt of the cover left the legs exposed, they were additionally protected with the sprays described in #1 above; so far, their surface seems unaffected by rain and snow. Despite the quality-control problem with the studs, the good condition of the surfaces after a nearly one-year exposure to the elements --a major concern for a painted-steel item whose type of steel is not specified, like in this case-- justifies a 5-star rating, in my view, since a 4.5-star rating is not allowed. UPDATE 2 (September 2018) 9. Almost 3 years and a half have past since it was purchased. The fire pit is still kept outside standing on four bricks when not in use, covered under the plastic waterproof cover (whose seams were sealed again with new high adhesion tape). The painted steel continues to be without rust or the paint chipping despite the rather frequent use of the fire pit on a weekend when the weather is cool enough to make it pleasant to be sitting next to an outdoors evening fire. The spark guard dome was accidentally (we hope) dented in two places last autumn by one of the children, a Kukkiwon il-dan, while training with her quarterstaff [ bō ] in the backyard -- these dents were gently removed and the surfaces repainted as described in #1 above, without any rust developing later. The 5-star rating for the product we received is indeed fully justified, making it worth recommending. * ADDITIONAL * (November 2017) I have received several emails asking questions about fire-pit safety. Expanding the review to include this topic would not be specific to the product, and might infringe reviewing guidelines. For those interested, I am adding a comment on safety in the Comments section below.

Set up and started using in about 10 minutes. Excellent Firepit.
Required only the 4 legs to be attached, which was a very easy task. Had it together, and fire started in about 10-20 minutes. My wife had researched and settled on this one due to its good reviews. We were not disappointed. The build quality is good, and the unit is very sturdy. The feature that I would like to mention above all is that the cover actually fits the inside diameter of the firepit body. This makes it impossible for the cover to accidentally slide off, or be knocked off onto nearby sitters. Other very shallow firepits often have spark lids that won't sit nicely after a few logs are added...as they are two shallow to dome over the wood. In this pit, the wood goes down in the body of the firepit, and the lid slides down inside the firepit to sit on top of the wood. Personally, I find that to be the best part of the design. Especially with young kids around, and wanting to keep sparks and popping embers inside the pit. Last note to mention is that the underside of this firepit does get very hot, and will scorch unprotected grass underneath. So if you love your lawn, plan accordingly.

Great Fire Pit!
I wanted a pit that was not to big but gave off great heat. This is it. Also just let me say it is sturdy. Get the cover for the pit to keep it from rusting. The heat is 360 degrees, meaning everyone can enjoy it . You will not be disappointed with this product.

Good looking and easy to assemble
I was shopping on another retailer's app for this and couldn't find all the details so of course I checked Amazon, and thank goodness because it was so much cheaper. It arrived quickly and I put it together by myself easily and quickly with all the included hardware and an adjustable wrench. I painted it with high-heat paint due to others' comments about the finish burning off. The top doesn't fit exactly - there's a gap around the sides, but no matter, everything looks great for our first fire tonight! I added play sand and will consider drilling holes for water in case we forget to put the cover we also got on it. The size is perfect for our smallish patio! It does say to not burn on a wood deck or grass, but I'm sure if you're careful to watch for hot spots and don't let it burn if it's rusting out on the bottom (it has to eventually, hopefully more later than sooner), it will be okay.

Worth the money. Great backyard pit!
Bought it for my boyfriend for his birthday. He loves it. Easy to put together. No trouble with screws or anything like some others have said. It is sturdy but it isn't too heavy to lift/move. We have had it for a month now with 3 fires and it is out in the sun and we've seen no discoloration. We did as recommended and put sand in the bottom. I did a lot of research on one's in this price range and I'm happy I chose this one because it is deep enough to have large fires. Works great! Totally recommend
