Not sure if you are a one can recycler, look no further. Decide later.
Not sure if I wanted a recycle can or not I took the leap. I have used it for a year now and still love it. Although, through no fault of it's own, I decided to take out the center divider and use it as regular can (2 small screws at top of can and a small Phillips head screwdriver plus 3 minutes of my time mostly searching for the screwdriver). It holds A LOT of garbage if you remove that center divider. Now I just throw my recycle in a can in my laundry room. By the time I have broken down cardboard or smashed a plastic bottle I have walked the six steps it takes to throw recyclables away. I need the extra steps anyway. I will update this if I have any problems. I promise.

After all the research, it really does exist...
When we decided to replace our 2 garbage can system with a dual compartment single can, I spent days researching. After seeing all of the sizes and reviews, I went into a store to see a couple of them in person in order to visualize them better. And each one only confirmed my fears--they were all tiny. No matter what, they would have never worked for us. I resumed my search on Amazon again, and through a google search for something along the lines of largest dual compartment indoor trash can/recycler, I ran across this one again. I had looked at it before, but honestly I was discouraged from buying it because I was not a big fan of the big triangle stickers on the front of the can and at the time, I didn't realize they were just that--stickers. But after realizing that this was the only can I could find in this size, I decided to give it a chance. As I was perusing the Amazon reviews, I realized the triangles were stickers and that they were easily moved from the front of the can to the lid. I thought perfect and decided to take my chances and order it. Amazon was as reliable as ever and I have to say, it was perfect. The size is actually perfect and much larger than most that I looked at (some of which would barely fit an empty gallon of milk). We can usually take it out about once a week (which was exactly what I wanted). Also, I give points to Nine Stars for their design. It really locks in the odor. We had tossed a blackened banana in there to get it off the counter and I forgot about it until I opened the can a day later and smelled it. But as soon as it closes, it locks the odor back in. I left it there until my husband came home from work just to show him (I know...but he was pretty amazed at how well it worked too). To give you a reference point for sizing, I have the 13 gallon trash bags and larger recycling bags (when we buy more, I'm going to get a similar size in recycling bags because right now it feels a little wasteful to use such a large bag to me). They fit fairly well--the trash can is deeper than it is wide so usually the bag doesn't seem to go all the way down, but it's a comfortable size when you go to take it out. Usually there's just enough extra space when everything shifts that I can toss a small grocery sized bag of trash from the bedroom or bathroom in on the way out the door. One of the reviews I read said that the bags were a little tricky to put in. They were the first time or two--I had to really focus on what I was doing, but it was an easy thing to get the hang of and now it's a pretty quick and easy job. You basically just fold the edge of the bag over these rings so they don't show and pop it in. It's not a big deal at all. Usually I follow the recommendation of another reviewer and take both out the same time, but I just tried to only take one out the other day and that works too. There are 2 separate rings so it can definitely be done fairly easily. Thus far, the motion sensor works great. If you need the lid to stay open for an extended period of time, all you need to do is push the open button instead of waving your hand over it. There is also a switch in the back to turn this off for changing the bags. It was the perfect purchase and I would highly recommend this product to others who are looking for a family size can where they can separate trash and recycling. As an added bonus, I noticed that I'm much more likely to consider whether all or part of what I'm throwing out can be recycled since they are both going to the same place so it might be a good way to help kids (or adults) really think about this difference. We already have some friends in our building who are looking at getting one too.

In the review...
At first I didn’t like how it is divided and I didn’t need a separate recycling section. The can is quite large compared to most trash cans, but each side is actually too small to be functional. A single gallon milk jug made it appear full. My wife would tell me to always take it out, but when I did pull the two bags you could combine them to ALMOST make a full bag. It wasted bags but kept her happy. However I easily removed two screws and the divider comes out without an issue. Size without the divider is perfect for pretty much anything. It uses 4 d-cell batteries but so far I have never had to replace them. Press the open button and it keeps lid open until you press the close button. I use large black 33 gallon trash bags and they work great. Automatic feature works good even in the dark and the lid automatically closes after a few seconds. If you take too long it will close on you but it is nothing to wave your hand again. If it does close on you it just opens back up and their is no risk of injury even for kids small fingers. It also opens just as easy for pets... Bags are held in place by a ring in the base of the lid so when the lid automatically opens the bag is secure. This can is super convenient for general use and has been awesome for my autistic son who refuses to touch anything with germs.

Works perfect and good looking
I did take the two small screws out of the divider as we have a single stream recycling system in place. The auto open top is the best! I would buy again.

No need to touch it! Unless you want to
This is the funnest... yeah weird but true..... appliance in our kitchen. It will take some getting used to folding the edges of the bag inside but it isn't a big deal! Now instead of having a garbage can and a box or bag for recyclables, this is all in one! LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH!!!! If you are doing something over the garbage and you need it open longer, use the "OPEN" button. Otherwise, passing your hand over it, it opens then closes automatically. So cool!

Loving our Trash Bin.
Love this Trash Bin. It's weird to love a trash can but our Family does, haha, I don't know how we lived without it! So far it's worked perfectly.

Why by Simple Human when you can have a Simple Life
Living in a world of waste...this is not a waste of money. Helps save the recycle trash from waste. Aesthetically not unpleasant like many old fashion trash cans. The response rate is fast for opening and closing. Buy the 10 year batteries in advance. Ensure you never loose the case over the batteries. My first Ninestar I bought 2 years ago...I dislodged the closure and it was never the same again. I am a repeat buyer because the brand is great. Any type of trash bags are sufficient. Do not buy the one recommended by Amazon because it isn't worth the money. Just be careful about protecting your electronics. It's like loosing the back cover of your remote to your TV...that sucks! ;-)

Nice for a smaller space; a kitchen joy
We live in a small apartment with one roommate. Our kitchen can't accommodate a big trash can and recycling bin, so this dual trash bin was a real space-saving pleasure. The motion sensor lid is just a plus. We've had ours about a month, and have had no issues whatsoever. (If anything with the mechanism breaks, I'll be sure to update this review, but our can came with the paperwork to receive the free one-year warranty.) The only qaulm I have with this product is that the separate sides aren't modular or removable, meaning that when we want to take the recyclables to the recycling center, we either have to carry the entire can or use a garbage bag on both sides, reducing the eco-friendly qualities of the can. The automatic lid makes up for all that. Its uses are beyond novelty (I don't have to touch the germy trash bin while cooking), but our guests love to play with it as well. I'd love to get another small unit for our bathroom down the line.

Best dual compartment trash can for the money!
Bought one for my sister 5 years ago - she loved it! After 5 years of continual use and grandchild torture the auto-open lid stopped working and nothing we tried could fix it. She liked it so much we just ordered her another one- five years of daily use isn't bad for an auto-open lid. If you want something to last longer, get a step-on model, but for the price we really like this product. In fact, we like it so much that we asked for one for our new house and our daughter got it for us for Mother's and Father's Day- sweet! So far it's working like a charm- my only complaint is ours came with 2 "other waste" stickers and no "recycle" sticker. I also wouldn't mind if the 2 sides were a little bigger- there's a fair amount of space left in a standard 13 gallon trash bag after it's removed from the can.

Holds more than you think!
I waited for a while to write this so I could be sure it would hold up. THIS IS A GREAT GARBAGE CAN!!! I love it. I was worried it wouldn’t hold much and be too small, but I didn’t want to have 2 separate cans for trash and recycling taking up lots of space in my apartment. This holds plenty- I empty it about once a week, sometimes it can go longer but I don’t like to leave wet things longer than a week. (Coffee grounds etc.) It’s easy to change the bags. Lid works automatically every time. Has a cute little noise it makes when the lid lifts - not loud at all. Light lets you know it’s on. Looks nice. Buy it! You won’t regret it!
