Great optical drive
Recently I built a "budget" desktop computer for my mother-in-law. I knew she would not be able to live without a good optical drive to listen to CD's and watch DVD's. I am not necessarily an Asus fanboy, but I have owned several of their optical drives, and over the many years, I have never encountered an issue. There are so many drives out there, from so many brands, all around $20...this one has not disappointed me yet, nor do I expect it to. Asus has long specialized in computer parts, both budget and higher end, and in my opinion, this is a brand and a drive you can trust.

instant happiness. plug and play on my good old Win7 PC.
Used this to replace an old LG IDE DVD drive in my workhorse Win7 desktop that had gotten tired. Pulled the old drive, popped in this one, added a new SATA cable (not included), and it spun up immediately. Win7 recognized it right away, without me having to ever even open the (included) driver disk. Put a commercial DVD into it that played instantly. Put a commercial music CD into it that ripped to iTunes instantly. It took longer to take the sides off my PC than to get it running. Fat and happy.

Perfect, no complaints
Even though DVDs are becoming more and more obsolite, I thought it would be nice to include one in my PC build. Pros: -not much to say, works perfectly no complaints Cons: -can get REALLY loud sometimes, but isn't a big deal This product is pretty straight foreward. Uses one SATA data connector and one SATA power connector. It worked with no problems for me. Just lock it into place, put in the cables, and you're good to go.

Quiet & fast cd drive, meant for replacing old burners in a PC
I noticed Asus burners were used in some older HP products I've had in the past, which performed over 7 years, so I decided to give this one a try. I can't attest to the long term quality of this drive yet, but it's basic functions are great. It's extremely fast, burning CD from iTunes in about 3 minutes. It's also very quiet during burning and playback (if you are in the next room over, with the door open, you can't hear it running.) I replaced a CD drive in a Dell PC (old tower style - Windows 8) with this Asus and I was concerned about the fit, as this PC has a large plastic door over the cd tray, but it fits perfectly. ***Be prepared that this product doesn't come with instructions or any cables. This drive is geared towards people replacing old cd drives, where you remove the old product and slide in the new, reusing the existing cables. There's no need to install any software, you'll get a Windows prompt the first time you play a cd requesting what actions you'd like windows to take any time this type of CD is entered. Other than that, just be prepared to remove some phillips screws and swap out cables.

A Great Drive for Accurate CD Rips
I've owned this drive for 3 years and it has been a reliable drive. Some might say that these are going the way of the dodo and while that may be true, as long as CDs are manufactured, I'll continue to use them. For that reason, It's hard for me to trust online stores that sell "Lossless" versions because I would rather rip it myself. I have it set-up and primarily use with Exact Audio Copy 1.3 to rip lossless copies of my CDs to FLAC format. This (DRW-24B1ST i) has a read offset of +6 as reported by AccurateRip.com for accurate CD ripping. As far as DVD burning/writing goes, I have never used this feature so I can't testify to it's effectiveness on this drive. As for cd ripping though, It has been nothing short of a great drive to use and I would highly recommend it if you are beginner or an experienced user of the art of CD ripping.

Great Drive, Salvaged Failing Media
Many positive reviews here as to the quality and longevity of the drive so I'd like to focus on another really pleasant surprise I had with this drive. It reads discs of various quality and age very, very well. Maybe the best I've seen in a drive. About 10 years ago I started making DVD backups and over time I moved most stuff to back up hard drives and Carbonite as necessary. I left most of my FLAC audio on DVDs and was very disappointed to find that of the 200 DVDs I had burned many had started failing. I tried these "bad" DVDs on several drives, including a Pioneer, Sony, Dell and others and most wouldn't read at all or would partial read. Just popped this in earlier this week and so far every one was readable with only a few that took a while but eventually were able to be copied. That's basically what good quality control on the laser assembly does, this thing is dialed in and can compensate for the poor tolerances of some DVDs and aged media. I've had great luck with ASUS on RMAs and warranty replacement too so my advice is that you really cant go wrong with this drive. Highly recommended

Excellent device from Asus I highly recommend it.
I seem to have the worse luck with these cd/dvd recorders but I told a friend I would try once more to record two music cds for him... It was a disaster and I went on line and ordered this recorder from Amazon. It was here in a day and a half. I pulled out the old one and this one plugged right into the same connectors. I installed the software... that was easy. The songs were still waiting for recording so all I had to to was hit the burn button. It took about 20 minutes to record then the cd auto ejected. I handed him the cd's, he went to his car and plugged one in... Awesome!!! every song had recorded and the quality was great. I have never had a problem with any Asus product I have purchased. This was a great deal.

Replaced an old PATA drive wonderfully!
Purchased this Asus DRW-24B1ST drive to replace the old standard DELL PATA DVD-RW in a XPS 400 system currently running Windows 10 (Home-32bit/4GigRAM). Installation notes: I had to buy a Molex to SATA power adapter and looked around for a spare SATA data cable that I had laying around. After the new product was installed and system powered on I went into BIOS and activated the SATA port and deactivated the PATA drive. I tested this drive by copying files to a DVD+R disk. Windows 10 recognized and provided drivers for this new drive and was able to use it right away. I did not install any of the 'Green' technology software from a CD that comes with it however. The drive I received already had the latest firmware installed.

The packaging was disappointing so I'm glad it didn't seem to have caused any damage
It was a replacement for the same DVD in my desktop. The original was starting to have trouble recognizing disks. So far this has worked as expected. It's OEM so it doesn't come in a retail box and was just put loosely into another box in a plastic bag along with a few of the other items in my current order. The packaging was disappointing so I'm glad it didn't seem to have caused any damage. No installation documentation for those that might want it, there was just a driver disk which wasn't even necessary since I was replacing it with the same unit and ASUS hasn't had a driver update in a few years.

Dependable burner that gets it right the first time, saving a ton of money on DVD's
I've used this DVD Burner almost on a weekly basis for tasks such as burning operating system discs (Kodibuntu, Ubunutu, Mint, etc..). The read/write buffer is amazing in is burner, out of spindle of 500 DVDs the waste percentage is under 5% (less than 25 out of 500). I've owned several other brands of DVD burners and experienced a much higher waste percentage, as high as 20% with one particular burner. So definitely recommend this Asus burner for your day-to-day burning needs, I've also installed these in personal computers for customers and they have exceeded customers expectations.
