Save Money and Keep Our Planet Green. Here's how to do it. Each of these little v-shaped filter cartridges is actually two plastic halves that snap together. Simply use a sharp kitchen knife to wedge between the two halves and work around the outside until the two halves come apart. Inside you will find two thin outer felt filters with a bunch of black rocks (activated charcoal) sandwiched in between. Keep the two felt filters but throw away the activated charcoal. Place the two felt filters and the two outer plastic halves in a bowl and soak in water with a splash of bleach added. Allow to soak for two hours. This kills all bacteria and mold that may have accumulated and helps clean the filter. Completely and throroughly rinse with water until no bleach smell. Allow to dry. Next go to Amazon, Wally World or your favorite pet supply store. In the fish and aquarium supply department you will find bulk activated charcoal for sale. You will recognize the black rocks and its cheap in loose bulk form. Next, just reassemble the filters with the felt on each side and pour the charcoal in one side, high enough to keep the felt pressed against the walls of the filter. Your done! I do this with about 6 filters at a time to save time and it allows me to change out my filters more frequently for cleaner water. Good Luck!

I purchased these to use in a Raindrop Stainless steel fountain I bought a few years ago. They fit well & seem to be working good. My first filter that came included lasted a long time, & this is the first time I was having to buy replacement filters for it. I hope these last awhile too. You get 3 filters included. It says that it recommends replacing every 2-4 weeks, which seems excessive, & hopefully the filters will last longer than that because it becomes very pricey otherwise. Be sure to rinse them out well before installing. I rinsed it with warm water & a good amount of black came out from the charcoal, & after installing, I had to run one cycle & replace the water right away. Also important is to take the motor casing apart & clean it well too.

I'll tell you, I love my metal Fountain. My cat has one of those chins that gets packed me from the plastic fountains. Plus let's face it unless you fill it with filtered water you're going to end up with a little bit of gummy stuff on the edges. So the stainless steel cleans up really nicely. I'm loving the subscription that Amazon offers, I just put this on every 3 months for the packet of three and now I make sure I change it on the 1st of every month. Pretty cool

I had a holistic vet who told me animals should be fed and watered from a steel bowl. All other fountains were plastic or ceramic, so i was so happy to see this one. The motor could be a little stronger, the water doesn't make a sound, it just "flows" rather than having any height to it like some do. On the other hand then I don't have to worry about my cat being afraid of it either. The air in my house gets dry in the winter in spite of the humidifier, so this also helps humidify it a bit more and the dry air made me decide to get the bigger fountain. It is dishwasher safe (except for the detachable motor of course!) so clean up is easy and so is the assembly. I would recommend you skip the first part of the directions for set up and go to reassembly, it advises you to check the motor setting before you put it all together and has more info in it. I would purchase this one again!

I have two cats (who thankfully like to drink out of their fountain), and one of these filters will last me about a month. I suppose it might last longer, but since you can't really see when a carbon filter is "used up," I follow the instructions and don't go beyond a month. I clean the whole setup about every two weeks, and this seems to do a good job in the interim of keeping "floaters" out of the water. It rinses off easily, it doesn't generally get icky or slimy. Of course, my cats also don't tend to drop kibble in it or shed in it, so they may just be easy on filters themselves. Whatever the case, I'm happy with them.

What can I say? These filters do their job - they keep the water clean! We don't even change them as much as we probably should. The directions say to change them every 2-4 weeks. We have 2 cats and change them every 4-6 weeks. We could probably extend them even longer too, but decided not to push it. To extend the life of the filters, we run them under cold water every week (when we clean the fountain). The Amazon price is pretty good too!

If you use filtered water to begin with, these filters will keep your cat hydrated and healthy for about two months. At the end of that time, open them up using a pen knife around the edges and dump out the active carbon granules. Rinse the casing and the filter material, let dry, and store. You can save them and refill with fish tank active carbon, if they ever become unavailable or too costly. Right now, I found it just as cheap to buy news ones; but you can never tell what tomorrow will bring. They might even stop making them all together! Petco makes their own version, but when I ordered some, the little bags for each filter were filled with a fine soot. The Pioneer Pet versions never were. Pioneer's are also made in the U.S. The Petco's are not. I was afraid the much smaller active carbon material would float around in the water. I wouldn't drink such water; why subject my cat to it? I returned them to the store. Otherwise, I like Petco. Try their 2.2 lb bags of Nature's Variety Instinct dry cat foot, especially the chicken versions and duck versions. They are 49% and 40% high-quality protein, respectfully, the rest is vegetables and fruit; no grains, by-products, gluten, potato, etc.

I purchased Pioneer Fountain Big Max- Stainless Steel 128oz back in November of last year after being fed up with my PetSafe Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet Fountain. There were so many parts to clean and with 6 furbabies in my home, it was a weekly chore that filled me with dread. The Big Max fountain is awesome. It has half as many parts to clean as the 360 and with these filters I only have to clean it twice a month. These filters do an excellent job of not only filtering the water but also catching hair and blocking it from getting into the all-important motor. I highly recommend these filters if you have a pet fountain that fits them. If you have less furbabies than me you can probably even go longer in between cleanings.

Great filters. Last quite awhile, and are easy to change out in the Pioneer Pet fountains. No complaints! Arrived quickly and in great condition. Just make sure you rinse them thoroughly under water to avoid getting charcoal bits in your fountain. I think they suggest changing the filter every 2 weeks, but in my experience you can stretch them to 3, possibly 4 weeks. If you live in an area with hard water (like I do), I definitely suggest putting filtered water into your fountain. It'll make your filters (and your pump) last longer!

This is a replacement filter for the Pioneer Fountain Big Max- Stainless Steel 128oz. It's extremely easy to replace and it comes in a pack of 3, 9 or 18. My filter last about 3 months for 2 cats. There is no indicator light to signal when you need to replace the filter, but you can tell when you see sediments in the fountain. My answers to the frequently asked questions: How often should you replace the filter? It depends on how many cats/dogs utilize the fountain. I have two cats and it takes about 3 months for me. Why do these filters expel disgusting, slimy, black things that look like tiny wet leaves? It's the residue from the purifiers. Wash it under cold water for a few minutes to let it filter through before using it. I highly recommend to improve the health of any pet. Like our review?
