Believe the hype. Seriously. Easy to set up and use (my 3-year-old set it up on her own while I got a glass of water), works way faster and better than the Rug Doctor, and is just all around amazing. We had our carpets professionally cleaned the day we moved into our new house and they couldn't get out the years-old stains. The Big Green did it in ONE PASS. I got lazy and didn't use the entire tank the first time I used it so it sat overnight and the water got cold. I used it the next day with cold water and it STILL worked on the stuff the pros couldn't get out. I never want to be without this thing. But here's the only down side: you better be prepared to clean the entire room. Because the Big Green does such an amazing job that the carpet will actually be two separate colors between where you cleaned and where you didn't. So if you don't want everyone to know how nasty the rest of your carpet is, you have to clean the entire room. But you'll have fun doing it so it's not really a down side.

Yes, it is expensive, but forget buying the smaller, lesser machines. Unless, that is, you are someone who doesn't have a space for a machine this large. I have now had this thing for over four months and it has saved my carpet. I have 7 cats. Running over a great swath of cat vomit with this machine is like taking an eraser to a chalk board. Sweep sweep sweep and it is gone. I no longer cringe when my senior cat, Toby, has a problem. Because I know the solution is just sitting there in my closet. I had a room upstairs filled with over 50 birds (I was breeding canaries), and a tortoise in a house. I got out of breeding birds and found a better place for the tortoise, and then I found myself staring in horror at the carpet under the two aviaries and the tortoise house. I had several inches of accumulated bird dander and seed dirt under the aviaries. The tortoise had dumped her water repeatedly and the red substrate I had as her bedding got wet and soaked into the carpet under her house to the point it was literally black. I tried my smaller Bissell and it really did very little. I saw this machine and hated the price. But I bought it anyway. It is literally on my top five purchases EVER in my life. It took 10 repeated shampoos to get that carpet in that room looking like new. Which it does, by the way. I can't even believe it--even the black carpet under the tortoise house looks new. You can't buy into those pictures that show a filthy floor and a path of perfect cleanness behind the machine like it's done this with one swipe. It takes repeated shampoos. I used over an entire bottle of cleaner to get that room to the point that the water in the tank was finally clean. Anyway--if you are chewing your nails at the price, don't. Better to get a machine that does the job at the start, then get lesser machines that kinda sorta do the job, until you one day throw up your hands and go for the big one. You save money in the end to not buy the smaller machines. Unless, as I said, you don't have the space. Or maybe you live alone and you aren't very strong. This thing is rather heavy. But I find when I want to take it upstairs, it's easier to remove the two tanks first. Also, Bissell's anti-urine odor product that goes with this machine is very effective. My Toby liked to pee on my carpet in one spot until I found premium cat litter to get him back to using his box. My entire condo smelled like pee after the first shampoo as this machine drew up all the nasty stuff from the carpet pad under the carpet in that area. After the second shampoo I wasn't smelling urine anymore. At all. And now when I walk into my condo I no longer smell that disgusting smell. So do I recommend this machine and the products that go with it. Hell, yes! Best investment I have made since I bought my home.

I was skeptical of all the great reviews. It's hard not to be - they claim this carpet cleaner is the best out there, for several reasons. I have to say the reviews are telling the truth. I own (soon to be owned, because I'm selling it) a Hoover SteamVac. I bought it because of the great reviews it has on here. Slowly, I became frustrated with the machine because it wasn't cleaning as well as I anticipated. My house has a light colored carpet, and since it was installed (over 10 years ago), the carpet has been subjected to much abuse by our dogs and unscrupulous care without ever being properly cleaned. I bought the SteamVac to tackle the job, but it was incredibly inadequate. See the below picture: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/permalink/moIZZ3Y26MK2V4/B00450U6CS/ref=cm_ciu_images_pl_link I had been eying the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine for months, but I relinquished any idea of buying it because of the price. I tried to rent one, but the Lowes here still carry Rug Doctors. So I thought about renting a Rug Doctor. I nearly did, but the reviews on here deterred me. In searching the reviews on here for comparisons between the Rig Doctor and the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, I found that many of them said people had tried both and the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine came out on top. A couple reviews even said that they had used the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine right after using the Rug Doctor and recovered a significant amount of dirt that the Rug Doctor missed! Other negative aspects of the Rug Doctor that I've read about include: it wets the carpet far too much (as a consequence, the clean tank needs to be refilled often), it's cumbersome to use due to the one direction cleaning capability, and filling/cleaning the machine out is a chore due the clean water receptacle being attached to the unit. So I accomplished the mental feat of convincing myself to purchase the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine by rationalizing the cost in various, sometimes nonsensical ways. I found the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine at Frys for $399, and, with the soon expiring Bissell $20 rebate, the total cost after tax was about $410. Ultimately, that's still a lot of money, but it's quite a bit better than $469, which is the current going price on here. Don't get me wrong, I love Amazon, and it's usually the cheapest for many things, just not this time. So I bring the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine home, unbox it, and get it ready for use. It's pretty much ready to go immediately - all I remember doing is taking some cardboard and a bottle of cleaner out of the dirty water tank. I filled the machine with hot water and cleaner and decided to unleash the machine in the dirtiest room in my house. I was 100% prepared to return the cleaner if it was anything short of amazing. Guess what? I haven't returned the cleaner. See the above picture again to see the result of my first test. I proceeded to clean my whole living room (the first picture being of a bedroom). See the below picture for reference of the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine's ability: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/permalink/mo2S8AT3BREGLNE/B00450U6CS/ref=cm_ciu_images_pl_link So, I am very pleased. The Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine does an exceptional job of cleaning. * The machine does seem very durable. The five year warranty is nice too. We'll see if I need it. * I was afraid that the brush, only spinning one way, would fail to clean the carpet well. I don't think this is a concern. If it becomes one, you can always clean an area from the opposite direction. I do wonder if another brush on the bottom spinning the other way may improve the cleaning capability of the machine. It already cleans very well, though. * The tanks are perfectly matched - the dirty tank seems to get full the same exact time that the clean tank empties. * The extractor really pulls the solution back out of the carpet. Not only does this make the carpet drier, but I actually noticed sediment in the dirty tank! I'd say that with this machine, the carpet dries about twice as fast in comparison to when I have used my SteamVac. * The handheld attachment works well. I like how easy it is to hook up. I used it to clean the edges of my carpet. I actually scrubbed with a household brush to loosen the dirt, then used the attachment to suck it up. The downsides of the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, as small as they are, in my opinion, include: * The machine is heavy and taxing to use. There's no getting around this because it comes with the territory of being a heavy duty cleaner. But, for what it's worth, I'm a fit male and using the cleaner tired me out. * The handheld attachment seems less durable than the rest of the machine. I might feel this way because the floor model I looked at in the store included a broken attachment. I think others feel this way, though. * The manual states that the warranty is void if you use anything other than Bissell cleaning solutions. I used the provided bottle, and it worked very well, as evidenced by the photos I provided. However, Bissell solution is VERY expensive. Generic brands available at Home Depot or Lowes are far cheaper. I'm not sure how Bissell can hold anyone accountable for using another brand of solution, but I think this is a concern. In summary, I HIGHLY recommend the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine. I haven't used a Rug Doctor, but based on the reviews others have written, there's no reason to. This machine costs three times what my Hoover SteamVac did, but there's no question that the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine is more than three times as better. Sorry for the super long review. I'll edit it as I remember new information. EDIT: I tried the machine in a family member's extremely dirty room. This is a quality home carpet cleaner: solid, heavy, capable. If you want to clean your own carpets, you probably can't do better than this. Cheaper non-commercial units clog more easily and lack the ease of filling and cleaning of this Bissell. This cleaner relies on liquid, a large beater brush, gravity and a vacuum to do its work. The weight of the machine (and it is quite heavy) supplies friction to the beater brush which follows directly after the water and soap dispenser beneath the machine. One pass is made dispensing cleaner and allowing the beater to work. A second dry pass follows with the vacuum pulling dirty fluid from the carpet. You don't lean into it. You just roll the machine forward and pull the trigger on the first pass, then roll it and vacuum on the second. I cleaned carpets professionally while in graduate school, and I'm convinced rotos (floor buffers) with whips attached to the disk and fluid reservoirs holding cleaning fluid make the best carpet cleaners. You can heel a buffer into the worst dirty spots and really put muscle into cleaning, then finish by wet vacuuming. Steam cleaners get deeper by virtue of heat. This machine lacks the ability to heel of a buffer, and the heat of steam cleaning. But if you're going to clean your own carpets and don't want to rent or spend $1000 on a buffer, or don't have the skill to run a heavy floor machine, this is the best you can do and it will do a fairly good job. It's substantial and well-built. It doesn't heat the water--you have to get it hot from the tap. But I've owned cheaper units, and they're not worth the $100-200 you spend on them. A few cautions: 1. Watch out not to overuse cleaning solution when cleaning your carpets. I typically clean once with solution, then the next two times I clean, I only use hot water. Over-application of cleaning solution will cause carpets to attract dirt over time. 2. Vacuum carpets carefully before using this, or any. carpet cleaner. Use of this machine on unvacuumed carpets will grind dirt into the fabric. 3. Be careful to place plastic or aluminum foil patches under wood furniture placed on wet carpet. Tannens and stains in wood will often leave permanent marks when wood is placed directly on wet carpet.

A number of years ago I had purchased one of the Bissell Pro Temp Machines that Consumer Reports had given the top rating in the home carpet cleaning machine category. I was never really satisfied with it, it was fine for light maintenance type cleaning, but could not handle a really dirty carpet without leaving a tremendous amount of dirty water in the carpet. The suction for that machine just wasn't adequate to do a decent job. So I found myself with an embarrassingly dirty carpet and an under-performing carpet cleaner. I seriously considered just replacing the carpet. But I thought I'd check Amazon and see if there was a "miracle" machine that could help me save some serious $$$. After looking at Amazon reviews and YouTube videos, I decided to put out the money and gamble on the Big Green Machine. I also ordered the Professional 2x concentrated cleaner as well. I am beside myself how GREAT this machine works!! See my attached picture - you'll be amazed. I was really only hoping to get the carpet as passable and ended up with carpet that looks almost brand new! I took other's advice and used Borax along with the cleaning solution hoping for a miracle and I'm thrilled with the results. I mixed the Borax at a ration of 1/2c/gallon of very hot tap water. I didn't have the problem with the Borax not dissolving as others reported - I think the key is to make sure your water is very hot.

So I ordered one on Amazon and had delivery problems, but since Amazon did a fantastic job refunding me so I could get one local because the job had to be done urgently, I will post my review here too. IF YOU OWN A HOME WITH CARPETS THIS IS A MUST OWN. Seriously, it is a rare product that exceeds expectations. I went over carpet that had multiple years worth of urine and poo stains from dogs and potty training/accidents/wee pads etc. This literally erased all of it and not only brought back the carpets to pre-dog era but brought back the original plush texture I didnt even know the carpet had. The professional service used before I moved in didnt do near the job this machine did. I also only had to use about 1/4 of a $20 bottle of bissel pet formula cleaner solution and refill the tank twice. Not bad at all. While $300-400 for one seems like a lot it is a great investment since these have a long warranty and rentals cost about $30 PER DAY at many places. This machine will pay for itself and still look brand new unlike those gross dirty rental units with who knows what germs and filth residue hidden within..Do yourself a favor and buy this thing. I do not work for/have stock in/even really like much bissell stuff but this machine is totally unreal and a superb product and I really do believe it is a must own.

Probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. I had a Hoover Steam Surge product and it did pretty well and lasted probably 4 moves and about 5 years so I thought. My old hoover stopped working so we purchased a new one on black Friday. Big Mistake. I used the new one for part of one room before it stopped working and I thought the Hoovers were supposed to be better than the Bissell's. So I took it back and did a little research and talked with my wife about it and we decided to spend a little more than we wanted on a carpet cleaner and bought the Bissell Big Green. Boy was I amazed at how bad the old and new hoover really were. This thing smoked the hell out of the Hoover Consumer carpet cleaners by a landslide. And we thought we vacuumed enough with our 2 dogs, This thing picked up so much dog hair it was nuts. The only Con of this thing, and to be honest isn't a con if it is pulling it up, but it will leave little hair balls here and there depending on how much dog hair is in the carpets. Most of it will be in the dirty water, but you will find quite a bit on the rollers, and occasionally little hair balls. But they are super easy to pickup and clean off the rollers and from inside of the cleaner. If you need a carpet cleaner and are willing to spend a little more than the consumer units at your local electronics store, then I would say pick this thing up right now.

First off this carpet cleaner really is amazing! We have rented rug doctors in the past and really wanted something similar. After reading LOTS of reviews and comparisons we decided on the bissell. We have a pug that likes to be choosy with when she goes to the bathroom outside. Even though we clean as she has accidents we typically have to have our carpets deep cleaned every 6 months. This cleaner did AMAZING to get rid of the pet stains and really left are carpet feeling amazingly clean. Fast forward almost 6 months later and getting ready to have company over I told my husband we needed to clean the carpets. However with his busy work schedule and myself being 7 months pregnant we decided to not use the bissell and hired a company to come clean our carpets... it was a nightmare. Guys machines weren’t working right, lied to us and said it was sucking water when it clearly wasn’t, and left us with super wet carpets at 6pm telling us to leave our widows open and fans on and they would dry fine(it’s going to be in the 40’s tonight...) So when this 7 month prego mama got home after being gone with two kids for 3 hours while someone “cleaned” our carpets... I was more than a little angry. I told my husband thank goodness we have the bissel! I took it out and we sucked up 1 1/2 buckets full of dirty water! Then cleaned again in less time than the company took and our carpets are practically dry! If you have to clean your carpets regularly GET THIS MACHINE! It’s amazing!

So I and every dad I know who has used this thing are raving fans. We get excited about washing carpets. When a product works and works really well as in "exceeds expectations which were already really high" people like to use the product. I like to wash carpets now. I work at a church as you can see from the photos. This is a picture from our junior high youth group room. Lots of coffee stains from the men's group that meet in several days a week and from jr high students who no matter what can't keep from spilling something on the floor anytime liquid is present. By far the best stain in the carpet was from red vomit. Not bloody vomit. Oh no. A kid had red colored soda and red vines before bed and came down with the flu during an overnight event last New Years Eve. Red puke all over the place. Spot cleaned it but you could always tell where the stain was. Not anymore. Back to the review. This thing is magic. It's actually science but it's as good as magic because the stains are gone. Gone. 1 pass. See for yourself. Had one of the pastors take it home to do his house and he says his carpet never looked that good and that it "changed the way my house smelled...in a good way." Another pastor took it home to do his floors and after one pass the carpet looked way better but the water coming out was so gross he had to do another pass. Second pass and the water was just as gross as before. Thinking third time is the charm did a final pass. Still brown nasty water. This thing works really well. Maybe too well. Now he wants to rip out the carpet and install wood. According to him the carpet looks, feels, and smells great now though. We've used the extension hose for upholstery on the pews at one campus and chairs at another campus and it works great for that. Some people want the new car or the new motorcycle or the new set of golf clubs. After talking about it extensively (ok for a few minutes) all the dads that work here want this carpet cleaner and now the church has one. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Will pay for itself in a few weeks and these church carpets will be clean enough to eat off of. I mean I still wouldn't eat off of them but you know what I'm saying.

This thing is THE BOMB! Never in a million years would I have imagined something this small could erase TWENTY YEARS of cigarette smoke and dog messes from a carpet but this DID! I'm amazed and astounded. It is small (it fits in the closet) yet powerful enough to virtually erase years of heavy foot traffic and dog accidents. All I can do it reiterate what the other reviewers have said - you cannot believe your eyes (see photo). This was after just ONE PASS with the Big Green using the Bissell "All Purpose Cleaner" and a teaspoon of TSP with hot water in the tank. After the second pass and using the stair cleaner around the baseboards (the unit doesn't get under the baseboards - if there is a negative, that is the only one) it looks like we hired a professional to clean this carpet. And it was disgusting! My mom never cleaned this carpet in 20 years of living here. I never thought it would be clean. NEVER. Not only is it CLEAN but it no longer stinks of cigarettes and wet dog. Well worth the price. I would also recommend you get the stair cleaner attachment as that can be used to clean around the baseboards, stairs as well as your couches and chairs (if they can be cleaned).
