Used at the top of my stairs. Also bought 24" zip ties and put the ties in plastic tubing around my banisters for extra security. The zip ties I bought on Amazon are industrial strength. The standard banister kits are soooo expensive. Works perfectly with 2 two year olds and 2 large dogs.

I have 3 boys, 3 dogs, and a pet pig. I’ve been through A LOT of baby/pet gates. This one is by far my favorite and the most durable. I own two of them! We have a fairly open floor plan so the fact that this gate can fit just over a 51” wide space right out of the box is even better! It’s fairly easy to assemble and goes up even easier. You can lock it shut at the bottom or latch it so the gate only swings open one direction.

I researched gates and then purchased this one Febuary 2016. It has met and exceeded my expectations. We just recently became step-grandparents and our dogs had a litter of pups. We needed a gate to keep them all seperated/contained and this gate has solved our problem. The included mounts worked either by pressure or hardware. Safety was a big issue so we hardware mounted ours to the door frame. My husband said it was simple and easy to install. It is very secure, we have not had to adjust or tighten any of the parts so far. The gate is tall and we have not had either the children or the dogs go over it. It order to open the gate the handle has to be pressed in on the top and bottom. I can do this with my thumb and index finger easily. The gate stays open until you shut it. It will open either direction or you can set it to open one way only. The opening is big enough for a big hipped person to walk straight through. There is a bar along the bottom but I haven't tripped on it yet :) We have a standard size door frame and did not use any of the included extensions. And we can still shut our door with the gate in place!

This is why this is a superior pet gate: 1) It is not made of wood. I had a fashionable wooden date that my dogs eventually chewed on and ruined it. 2) This gate does not have a spring hinge on it. That is actually a pain at times when you need it to remain open. 3) It is higher than a normal "dog" gate. 4). The operation to open it is very simple, close it behind you and it latches. 5) This creates a simple buffer between the house and the garage door where dogs are usually right the door ready to run out! Definitely recommend this.

The Munchkin Gate has been a great choice for my home. The control you have over adjusting between 29.5 - 54" wide is great, and we also love the height (36"). I purchased two (one at top and one at bottom of staircase). The actual installation took longer than expected: about an hour of measuring and finagling to ensure the best fit. The instructions were the worst part. They were picture based but you can find a good youtube video out there. Also, the product page for the manufacturer now has written instructions! There was a lot that we learned about the gate that wasn't apparent from the cryptic instructions. The gate opening itself is 22" wide with another 7.5" on the sides. This is the minimum width you can set it to. It also comes with one small extension (2.75"), one medium (5.5"), and one large (11"). Additional extensions can be purchased from the company as long as you don't exceed two 11" extensions. Beyond that width, it is not guaranteed to be stable. The adjustment rods are 4 independent pieces and can add up to 2.5" additional space for you to work with. Measure your opening and then plan out the best extensions for your opening based on these figures. If you aren't sure, call Munchkin and they'd be glad to help you figure out your best option. The installation was a bit trickier for me due to two things. We needed the adjustment rods to be at a different depth at the bottom than at the top due to the baseboards. The harder part was working around a hand railing on one side at both the top and bottom of the stairs. We ended up putting the gates on the first step from top instead of at exact top because it wouldn't fit with the handrail otherwise. After figuring out placement and measuring the openings we needed to set, it was pretty straight forward. We didn't need to add any extensions on (but if so the first step would be to remove the plastic plugs at the edge of each side of the gate with a flat head screwdriver, add small plastic adapters to put extensions together and reinsert the plugs on the outside of the extensions. I've seen the gate installed elsewhere. If you use extensions, it can bow out a bit at where they fit together rather than looking like a straight line. The adapters between the extensions don't seem that sturdy.) After adding any necessary extensions, the next step is to attach the mounting cups to the wall. We didn't drill the mounting cups into the wall or use any wall anchors - the tension mount holds strongly enough for our application. The final step is to turn the adjustment rods until it is tight against the wall. We closed the swing guard on both sides so that the gate didn't open and then placed it in the middle of the opening and screwed the adjustment rods until there was a tight fit between the wall and the mounting cups. Finally, we adjusted the swing guards so that they would only swing one direction (away from the stair risers). The gate door stays open until you manually shut it. (Munchkin does sell auto-close models). This gate doesn't take a lot of force to close. It's easy for an adult to open by simultaneously pressing on the top and bottom of the locking mechanism. A lock mechanisms on one of my gates was defective: it stuck open about half the time, meaning you thought you closed it (but no, the gate could be swung back open without pressing anything.I've included pictures of the gate open with the lock incorrectly "stuck down" and one with what the lock should look like when the gate is open.) I called Munchkin to ask if they would send me a new mechanism because I had a problem. I assumed that if they didn't have the part, I would have to return the gate to Amazon and order a new one. I didn't complain to Munchkin about it, just asked if there were any parts available. The woman responded saying that she could see that this is a safety hazard and no, they didn't have a part available to send to me. But... they sent me an ENTIRE new gate to replace the defective one, free of charge! It arrived within several days. I can't say enough about their customer service. I'm very happy with the quality of this product. My 2yo son pulls hard on the gates even though he knows he's not supposed to, and neither budges. (Note: On the top of the stairs we added vmaisi wall cups for a little extra stability, but due to space limitations we didn't use them at the gate at the bottom of the stairs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072LYNT7N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 ). He hasn't been able to figure out how to open it even though he watches me. If he does, I may switch to also locking the swing guards both directions so the gate won't move without doing both the lock and the guard. He isn't able to climb over it and our tiny dog can't get through the rungs (according to Munchkin, they are 2.2" apart). I have kind of tripped over the bottom track before, but since the gate is installed on the last step it hasn't caused an accident. As far as looks go: the gate is more of a dark gray than a black but eh, I can deal with it. It looks pretty seamless with our black balusters. The adjustment rods are silver threaded - wish they were black too. The gate opening is off-center for us with no extensions. All in all, very pleased with this. It looks like a planned part of the house rather than an ugly baby gate.

I absoultely love this gate! Its sturdy! Easy to put together. Difficult for kids to figure out. AND it has a lock system at the bottom (on both sides). You can control which way the gate opens! My 3 year old is 62lbs (the size of a 7 year old - muscle, not fat, he's a hoss) and this gate will withstand his weight, without budging. I especially love it, considering you dont have to put holes in the wall. Its a little heftier of a price tag, than a lot of other gates out there, but you get what you pay for and I would pay the price over and over again!

I have had several gates as the children grew up and by far this is the best. It is easy to install and come with great instructions. A pin top and bottom lock the opening. Gate swings both directions and there are tabs for one way use like on stairs. The comments about a gap at the lock are all from people not reading or understanding the instructions. The initial gap provided tension to secure the gate. Simple engineering principles are used to effectively secure the gate. I used rectangular Wall Nanny to secure the gate to a door frame. They grab well and don't slip. Good $17 additional. The gate's cups fit into the Wall Nanny's pockets so nothing is compromised with the mount. I am using my gate for pets. You need to assess mounting security for your end use. As I said, pretty secure.

Don't be fooled like I was, this is not easily assembled! The instructions have no words, only very complicated diagrams, I suggest using YouTube videos which I found much more helpful! The gate though, once put together, is fantastic! The metal is super heavy duty, I have 2 pitbull/mastiff mixes and they are constantly scratching, jumping on, & chewing on this gate and it's still perfect! It does show a few scratches from their sharp nails but they don't bother me! I had to use one of the extensions and the gate bows a little where the extension meets the gate, but it doesn't seem to be bending or affecting the integrity of the gate! It could be user error since I had a hard time putting the gate together, I'm not sure that it's a manufacturer problem! You need a screwdriver and a drill to assemble the gate if you want it to be very secure, but only the screwdriver is totally necessary! Overall, love this gate, it latches securely and my dogs definitely can't open it, but it's a breeze for humans!

This gate is well made and easy to use! The height is perfect, because it's about hip high and we don't have to bend down to open it. It's also a good height for our large dogs, and the spaces between the vertical bars keep them from poking their heads through. There is a rail at the bottom that you have to step over, but it's only about an inch tall and we haven't had any tripping issues with it. Installation is easy, as long as you read the instructions!!! Lots of reviewers complain that it's difficult to install, but nearly all of their complaints are due to not following the instructions. Previously we had a regular wooden baby gate that we constantly stubbed our toes on, but with a newborn we were worried we might trip...wish we had thought about buying this gate sooner! It's easy to open with one hand, and it closes easily too, even using a foot to push it closed.

Life saver! I bought this gate for my two dogs that kept urinating on the same spot in the carpet. We just moved into a new place & I guess the previous tenants had pets that must have urinated on the carpet, because my dogs were obsessively marking the spot - which they have never done before. I needed to keep them out of the hallway with the carpet & this gate seemed to be the most sturdy - my dogs are Houdini reincarnated. I've had it for about a month now & I'm so happy with my purchase - definitely worth shelling out the extra bucks for this gate. I didn't have any issues with the fit in the doorway, but I would recommend reading the review left by youngjuicy - it should be the "most helpful positive review" at the top of the review page. I went off their measurements as they obviously did alot of homework. My door frame measurements were within the range where the gate would work so I took the plunge & bought it - fits like a glove! I just used the pressure mount and the dogs have yet to knock it over. My only negative about this gate were the instructions. I wanted to cry while I was reading them & trying to put the gate together, but I recommend watching YouTube for the instructions. Despite the frustrating experience of the ridiculous instructions, I still give 5 stars because I love coming home everyday to my dogs not ruining the carpet & getting into stuff.
