Space saving workhorse
Truth be told, what I truly desire in the deepest corner of my heart is SimpleHuman's stainless steel butterfly step trash can, but I just could not justify (to my bank account) spending $160 on a trash can. Alas, I went with the plastic slim step-child, and although it lacks the diva flair of the butterfly, it's a sturdy little workhorse that provides maximum capacity in a very slim size. I have a galley kitchen with a narrow floor to ceiling window at one end in lieu of a wall. It provides nice lighting but isn't a good place for the garbage can, so I needed something that can fit under a sink cabinet or sit against the end of the counters and still be narrow enough not to block the entry way too much. This garbage can fits the bill nicely. The stepping mechanism feels sturdy even when the can is empty, with no wobble to it, and the top stays open if you lift it up by hand to 90 degrees, which is nice when I'm dumping scraps off of the counter into the can. The mouth of it is fairly wide and square, so larger items are easily disposed (fits gallon milk containers easily). It shuts slowly and quietly, no splattering, and seals nicely. The wheels make it easy to move it around. Locking feature is a nice touch to deter small children and pets from getting into the trash. I use regular trash liners (Glad ForceFlex Tall Kitchen 13 Gallon Trash Bag with drawstrings) rather than the SimpleHuman specific ones, and the drawstring part stretches just enough to slip over the lip of the can and the bag fits very snugly around the rim so that you don't get debris accidentally falling outside of the trash bag. I imagine this little workhorse will remain in our kitchen for a long time, even if we move to a bigger place. Unless I win the lottery and can afford the stainless steel butterfly step can.

Take your Trash Can Experience to the next level by weighing it down with DISTILLED WATER
If you've ever used a steel trashcan, which are usually heavy at the base, you'll be used to step-open trashcans staying completely in place when you step on them. This is plastic, so it's much lighter than steel. This means that when the trashcan is relatively empty, it'll move around quite a bit when you step on it. This can be annoying because you then have to position it back into place, and it just feels cheap when your trash can moves around when you step on it, no matter how high-quality the can. No worries, however. You can buy a gallon of distilled water for less than a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store and place it in the bottom of the trash can to weigh it down. Then, no matter how aggressively you step, it'll stay completely in place, and your Trash Can Experience will have been elevated from Mildly Irritating to Extremely Pleasurable. Don't worry, there will still be plenty of room once you add your gallon of distilled water; I use standard kitchen trash bags and the bottom of one of these bags rests just above the gallon of distilled water. Obviously, you don't pour the water into the can; just place the unopened gallon on its side in the bottom of the can. This trash can is High Quality and Highly Affordable. The lack of weight in the base is it's Achilles Heel, but if you employ this Powerful Distilled Water Trick for less than a buck, this baby will sing every time you open its mouth. As a bonus, if there's ever a natural disaster or some other doomsday scenario, you've taken your first step to prepping your survival stash ;) Happy Canning!

Excellent Trash Can - Excellent Customer Service - Excellent Price - Fast Shipping
After 18 years our old Costco chrome pedal can finally wore out. Sorry to see it go as it had a plastic liner in it. However, this new trash can is plastic, easy to snap on the lid, and the Costco or the SimpleHuman trash can liners fit inside of it perfectly. Unlike the Costco can that had a plastic, removable liner you WILL need to use a plastic trash bag inside which is great... I mean, they make disposing garbage easy. This SimpleHuman trash can is plastic and light weight. It comes with a plastic covered metal wall bumper to keep the lid from slamming into the wall. However, over time that metal bumper will eventually rub off the paint and probably scrape the sheetrock. I'd like to see SimpleHuman include a "J" type bracket to hold this bumper. For example, this bracket would screw into the wall. The metal bumper would then fit into this bracket. This would hold the trash can from moving around but have the benefit of letting one remove the trash can for cleaning when necessary. All in all we are satisfied with this trash can and the price is very good. Shipment was also fast (thanks Amazon). We recommend this trash can.

Perfect trash can for a small living space
I was very reluctant paying $40 for a plastic trash can, but with the impeccable reviews, I knew I was making a good decision. I've had mine for one month now and it's been great. The step to open the lid is as reliable as it was the first day I used it and the lid closes super quietly. It's a perfect trash can for those who live in a small space. The Glad tall kitchen bags (13 gallon) fit this trash can perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.

Works Great to Keep Dog Out of Trash
So I previously got the great idea to teach my Plott Hound mixed breed dog how to sniff things out. Matter of fact he has gotten so good that we play hide and seek in the house with treats and he can find anything by smell! However... the side effect of teaching him to be efficient with his nose is now he enjoys popping his head in the trash to grab stuff. He doesn't eat it, he just throws it all across the living room floor like a show and tell display for me to come home to. Just like you can't make a horse drink water you can't make a scent hound not smell so this was my cure all. It is made of pretty heavy-duty plastic. It is made well to the point where I don't see it breaking any time soon (I guess that is why they give you a warranty on it). The locking lid works fantastic. The lock itself actually takes a good amount of effort to open and close. I usually just slap it in to place when I leave but to unlock it when I get home I have to give it a good whack at the right angle to give it enough force to unlock. For some people it may be too hard but I personally prefer it so as to have peace of mind for when I leave for work. The lid has a thing that slows itself when closing so you don't really hear banging but it doesn't really catch/work unless the lid went almost all the way up. Step is very wide and works well also but I don't personally use it very often.

Dog proof and fabulous!!!
Got a dog that will get into the trash? My husband passed away, and he was much adored by my two Australian shepherds. Because I lived in such a remote location, I took up temporary residence on my son's farm in an apartment. My housekeeper remained at my main residence for three months, and my dogs loved her as well. The move to the farm was traumatic for them. They'd lost Dad and their beloved friend who had loved them so well. They became very aggressive about acting out, chewing on woodwork, tearing open overnight bags, and strewing garbage all over the place. I have one incredibly clever Aussie who can open any door he sets his mind to open, sometimes even when they are locked with a drop-down bolt. If I left them alone for even thirty minutes, I came home to kitchen garbage strewn from one end of the house to another. To be fair, these dogs had never done things like this until grief assailed them. But I knew I needed something bulletproof for my kitchen garbage while they adjusted to a whole new world. I found this Simple Human trash can, with a lock-down lid. I figured my clever dog would figure it out. But when it arrived, I even needed a trial session to figure it out. Once I did, it was easy to unlock. Boy, did it ever take care of the strewn trash! My Simple Human trash can might have been knocked over and pushed into the living room when I came home, but not one trace of garbage was outside of it. All I had to do was put the garbage can back where it belonged. No mess on the floor, period, and the can has no sharp edges to damage anything when it's shoved by a doggie nose. I stayed home all year, even so, making my necessary trips to town as brief as possible. My dogs needed one person who didn't leave, and they got over their grief in time. They had done nothing naughty for months. But then my housekeeper, dearly loved, unexpectedly found another job that better suited her, and not that long after, I had a prescheduled trip abroad to see my son. I knew it would hit my dogs hard when I suddenly disappeared and left them with a new caregiver, even though it had been over a year. And, oh, yes, they were naughty while I was away. I'm sure they felt frantic. The last anchor in their lives had vanished, and I was gone for a month. They'd been so good for so long that I didn't think to tell the new caregiver about the lock on the garbage can lid. She endured daily trash attacks while I was gone. When I got home, she and I made a trip into town together and left the dogs alone. Before we left, I locked the lid of this trash can. When we got home, it was pushed into another room, and my clever dog had figured out kind-of, sort-of how the lock worked. But all his efforts went for naught. The trash can will forever bear the marks of his teeth gouging the plastic and metal near the locking mechanism, but the trash can prevailed. My evaluation of this trash can: It holds nearly as much as a wider and more space-stealing trash can. Regular tall kitchen garbage bags fit it nicely It rolls around easily for sink-side tossing when you are peeling and dicing. The lid stands up for that, making it easy. It wipes down easily on the outside to keep it looking great The foot pedal lift works great for easy opening of the lid It's very attractive, as trash cans go It is stable and doesn't tip over unless a big dog tackles it I think a Rottie or Pit Bull could manage, with enough time, to chew part of the lid off, but it would require some time, and for most dogs, it is impervious to teeth. (Mine will always bear barely noticeable scars, right around the slide lock because my dog is so smart, but the can still looks nice.) My ending recommendation is that I've never owned a better, dog-proof trash can. I love it so much I even got one for my son.

Best Apartment Trash Can
My rubbermaid trash can of similar design finally broke, and rather than buy a white nondescript can, I opted for this sleek design instead. The dark color conceals stains so I don't have to wipe down its surface every week. It fits the costco brand 13 gallon trash bags perfectly and the soft lid closure works every time. Mind you, if you open the lid with your hand rather than the pedal it will slam because the soft-close feature is initiated by the pedal only. This only makes a difference if you're trying to be quiet, otherwise it's not an issue. It took both me and my spouse to snap the lid onto the lever portion (the lid is shipped uninstalled) and we're not weaklings... the plastic was just really rigid. Despite that, the lid fits snugly into place and I foresee us having this trash can for a loooong time.

Perfect!!
You know you’re getting old when your excited you found the perfect garbage can. We are a family of 4 and always have soooooo much garbage. Our dog kept getting into the one we gave previously and we were fed up with it. Found this one on amazon and after reading some reviews I ordered it. It’s absolutly perfect and we love how the lid goes down slowly. Our favorite this is the lock you can use. It’s kind of hard to lock and unlock but it keeps our dog out of it. We just buy the walgreens brand tall garbage bags and they fit perfectly! Very pleased with our purchase.

Glad I bought this one
I recently had a water filter installed on my kitchen sink which necessitates having the water tank under my sink where my trashcan used to be. I needed to buy a trashcan with a cover because it now needs to sit somewhere in my kitchen and this one looked pretty good. I really like this trashcan not only because it has a cover, but because it fits into a small space and holds a lot of trash. I use the 13 gallon Hefty trash bags and because they need to stretch across the top it's always a nice snug fit and the bag doesn't fall into the can. One of the better purchases I've made in a long time.
