Well, to be honest with you I had NO idea I was getting a bag this big (shipping weight 10 lbs). I was doing comparison shopping and most of the other bags out there are about 2lbs. Mostly, of course, it's heading the OTHER way regarding how much you get. More and more "1.8lb" are showing out there. So, lb for value of at least this hickory one beats everything else hands down price wise. I did find a store locally that will order in bags of difference chips/chunks. They are $3.49 for a two pound bag. EVEN for Oak, which I have found is pricey.

I've been making beef brisket for a few years now, started using hickory and didn't care for the flavor. I had a friend who swore by mesquite, still didn't care for it. After doing some research I found that pit masters in Texas, where brisket is king, use oak for their brisket. It's difficult to find chunked oak like this locally (the Webber chunks that the local big box stores carry don't come in oak). I was thankful to find it on Amazon at such a reasonable price. The first time I used these oak chunks I followed the same rub and cooking procedure I normally do, and the results were outstanding. I made 2 15 lb. briskets for about 25-30 people. They all loved it, and the people who had my brisket before all agreed that this one was far superior in taste. There was very little left over, but what was left over tasted much better re-heated. In the past when I've used hickory or mesquite, the reheated brisket wasn't that great. Anyway, I'm happy that I can get these chunks for such a reasonable price at Amazon. Definitely will buy again.

Quality Product and Price! Western's line of wood chunks for grilling are wonderful! They are at LEAST half the price that it costs at the store, and the quality is excellent! Most of the chunks are evenly sized, and they release great flavor. We bought cherry, mesquite, hickory, and pecan to use in our ceramic grill. I highly recommend ordering all of your wood from this company. ~ Shannon M. Russell "Sea Glass Goddess"

Nice sized chunks for both smoking as well as use as fuel mixed in with mesquite to grill. Chips just burn too fast when smoking something like a brisket for a long time, I need to add more too often, and they flare up when grilling. For low and slow I will start the fire with some charcoal then use these chunks as the main fuel, piling them to get that slow burn in my Primo Oval ceramic cooker. I have been buying these for a couple years now, its a staple of my outdoor cooking.

This package of Oak wood chunks helps me to augment the flavors of my grilling coming from a base of the hardwood lump charcoal that I use: Fogo FHWC35LB 35-Pound All Natural Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal Bag. Since my grill is a Char-Broil Kettleman 22.5-inch Charcoal Kettle Grill, I use a chimney to get the charcoal started and depending on what I am grilling, will either start more substantial chunks of the Oak wood in the chimney or spread some smaller chunks over hot coals just before cooking. The wood that came in the bag had good-sized chunks that weren't too large along with several smaller pieces that were about the size of my first two fingers together in volume. While the bag notes not to soak the chunks, I have found that those smaller pieces are great for soaking for a bit to kick off extra smoke for times when I have a fast-cooking grill item and don't need a whole chunk. The oak chunks here will sometimes have a rather large piece inside, but I'm impressed with the lack of tiny pieces in the bag and the relative uniformity of the wood chunk sizes overall. I keep the chunks stored in a plastic storage tub for easier access and this has worked very well. I will definitely order it again when I run low.

..if you don't have a local source for wood. I guess I don't have a refined palate like others, because I just don't get the "fruity flavor" thing when it comes to smoking woods. There is a definite difference between mesquite and other woods though. I use cherry for beef brisket (which I'm doing this weekend) and get no complaints. You can get Western products at wally world, but Amazon is comparable in price and convenient.

Followed the famous Aaron Franklin's instructions for smoking a brisket to a tee & used Oak for the first time in my Kamado Grill. I'm normally a mesquite fan, but it was too strong for a 12-14 hour brisket. Apple & Cherry weren't strong enough for my tastes. Using Oak??? Best. Brisket. Ever!

I smoke a lot of meats with my electric smoker and this Hickory is one of the woods that I always use. It offers the meat such a truly rich flavor that is hard to get with other meats. Now that said, Hickory is a stronger smoke taste, so if you want something more mild, then don't use this. I however, love the smoke taste so I use this on chicken, pork, beef, and even cheese. I have been using the Western brand since I started smoking and have found that the chips work very well in my electric smoker. I normally buy not on Amazon but from a local retailer because it seems cheaper than here, however, any Western chips will be a great quality and you'll be happy with your smoked food when you are done

I just started smoking meats and fish and came to Amazon to see if I could get different flavor chunks as I use a charcoal smoker. So far, I've used these hickory chunks for meats and the cherry chunks (same brand) for fish. I do not soak the wood prior and just lay them directly on the coals. They produce a lot of smoke almost instantly, and add great flavor t whatever I am smoking. I can do about 4 batches of smoking with one bag (I don't have a really large smoker, does about 2-3 rib racks at a time). With the Add-On Item pricing, this really is a no-brainer. Will continue to use as long as pricing/availability is good.

The quality of these wood chunks is very good. How can a wood chunk be of a certain quality level? First, I have burned these in my bullet smokers and on my charcoal grill for years, but recently discovered them listed on Amazon. The wood is aged yet not rotted and old which makes it ideal for flavoring whatever it is you are cooking. The chunks are fist sized which allows for long burn times in my bullet smokers and grill. The bag had only a few pieces of bark and some slivers. Likely these came loose in transit as every bag I have ever bought in stores is the same way. If you need or want wood chips, these are also available. The price as an Amazon add-on item is better than what my local stores charge even on sale and is the identical size and product. Since I am only a recreational barbecue and grill guy, this purchase makes sense for me. The convenience of having these already split and packaged eliminates any savings and my desire to buy and cut my own hickory into these sizes.
