While I can't measure specifically how well this works, I can smell and breathe the difference. We're a few miles outside Napa, CA, and had to leave our home for a few days due to smoke from the recent fires. Now that we're back, the air is still visibly smokey outside and dangerous to breathe without an N95-type mask. This air purifier has made breathing noticeably easier in our home, and the air smells much cleaner, especially with the ultra violet light turned on. I bought this model specifically because it uses "True Hepa" filtration, which filters out the smaller smoke particles that can get into your bloodstream. From what I've read, the (usually cheaper) "Hepa Type" filters do not eliminate those tiny particles, and they are the most dangerous element of smokey air. The noise level is equivalent to a small fan set on high. To me, it's a neutral, white-noise-type sound, but my son doesn't like it turned on high at night. I feel a lot safer with this air purifier running 24/7. It gives me peace of mind that I'm taking care of our dog's health, as well, because she obviously can't wear a respirator mask. So if you're in Nor Cal now and looking for an air purifier to help with smoke pollution, I recommend this one. Just check the square-foot coverage, because you may need to buy more than one.

I bought one of these units for my home office, which is 16' by 10' (160 sq. ft.). My 17 year old cat literally lives inside my office...he is a long-haired cat who sheds constantly. He's also very mean to everyone but me, which upsets me, but that has nothing to do with the review of this air purifier. His litter box is situated in one corner of the room. The smell of the litter box was the primary reason I purchased this air purifier. After using this air cleaner regularly for about two years, I can confidently say that it effectively and completely removes the smell of the litter box, helps control the amount of hair that floats around the room, and generally does a very good job keeping dust from accumulating in the room. On a scale of 1-10...1 being an air purifier that does nothing, and 10 being an air purifier that completely removes all airborne contaminants in the room, I'd rate this unit as a 7. The unit has 3 fan speeds...I keep it on the middle speed. The fastest speed is useless because, while it would obviously clean the room most effectively, it's so loud it sounds like I'm getting an MRI. Even the middle speed is unacceptably loud, but I've gotten used to it. The lowest fan setting is quiet, but it doesn't effectively clean the air in my office unless I'm on the middle fan speed. I always keep the UV light on. I have no idea if that light actually does anything...but since it's there, I might as well use it. I run the fan all the time, 24/7. The filter inside the unit lasts for about 4 or 5 months before I need to replace it. How long the filter lasts for you will obviously depend on several variables, like how dirty the air is in your room, what fan speed you leave the unit on, and how often you run the machine. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is looking for a relatively cost-effective and efficient air purifier for a room under 200 square feet. I included a picture of my 17 year old curmudgeonly cat, who is the sole reason I needed to purchase this air purifier. UPDATE (10/10/18): My cat is now 18 and a half years old and still going strong. But, he has become more demanding of me, which has strained our relationship. He often raises his voice at me...he never used to do that. I am concerned he may be losing his hearing, but I can't tell since he's always ignored me most of the time anyway. That aside, the GermGuardian air purifier continues to hum along without a problem. I still run it day and night, 24/7. Other than replacing the filter every few months, the unit has needed no TLC.

Although I dust & vacuum fairly often, I noticed I still had issues with my asthma when spending periods of time in my room (in particular when I slept at night). I was using my inhaler much more often than usual and I couldn't understand why my symptoms seemed worse in my bedroom. I've seen advertisements for air purifiers in the past (like the ones that claimed to blow 'happy ions' in your face) & figured they were the 'snake oil' of air filtration systems. It wasn't until nursing school when I started to learn about HEPA filters for hospitals that I realized proper filtration could be a game changer for my symptoms. I did my homework while searching Amazon and came across this germguardian purifier that seemed to have great feedback. After reading reviews & confirming the integrity of customers' feedback (Fakespot.com got your back), I decided to give this filter a go. I've had this air purifier for about 5 months now and I would buy one for every room in my house if they were a little less expensive. My symptoms aren't nonexistent but they've definitely improved and that's all I could ask for! I included a picture to show just how much stuff it filters from the air. This particular filter that I've just replaced is completely coated with a thick layer of dust bunnies (and goodness knows what else) after only a few months of use. My symptoms make total sense now that I see how much stuff gets left behind when cleaning. I'm hoping to catch this purifier during a price drop one day so that I can get more for my home & maybe even one for the office I work at. In all, it helps to have a little backup to help catch all the stuff that's been missed, especially for rooms with carpeting or tons of fabric that dust likes to hide in.

I bought these (2) back in a Sept and placed them in the family room, just off the kitchen (about 800 sq ft.) thought I would wait to give it a good solid review as there are many conflicting reviews. First of all I can’t say enough good things about this product. I have 4 dogs and live in the Desert. (So that should tell you right there) I noticed within the first four hours that it was easier to breath, my sinuses (will always be bad) have not flared up, the dust seems to be minimal (provided you vacuum on a regular basis) and as long as you clean the filter(s) ( I take them outside & smack them together a few times) this product will work for you too. True story I had purchased some glad air fresheners (plug in) and wondered why they didn’t work so I put them in another part of the house (just in case) and they work fine. Not only do the air purifiers pull out good smells, but bad. I turn them on when baking fish, chicken or whatever and it keeps the smell out or takes it out of the house if your forget to turn them on. Also, regarding the electrical smell, IF you leave them on HIGH (which you don’t need to) and leave them in for a long time; yes you will get that smell. Medium works great for our rooms & No smell. You wouldn’t drive your car at 125 mph cause you can right? No need to run on high. So my advice if you want a good working purifier but these. Keep your floors vacuumed and smack the filters. Lol Mine filters are pretty smacked out so after 6 or 7 months I would replace them as I am going to do myself. Hope this review helps.

I suffer from extreme pollen allergies. Last year I bought this product and I was honestly amazed by the results. Granted, I put it really close to me (I have it on my nightstand, the air blowing on my face while I sleep) but my allergies when around this product were minimal. There were even days where, as long as I don't leave my room, I could go without allergy medicine at all. If I could give it 10 stars I would. My life in the spring is no longer a nightmare. Thank you GermGuardian! I have had it going non-stop since I bought it and have had no problems with it at all. It is amazing, I clean the filter almost every month now but there is always a disgusting amount of dust even though I keep my room pretty clean. I cannot recommend this product enough!

I bought this 'purifier' with the intention of keeping too much dust from building up in my bedroom, but was pleasantly surprised at the ability to remove odors. My bedroom is small (less than 200 square feet,) and I close my door when i sleep, so it can start to smell over time. The charcoal filter does a terrific job of removing odors in the air, along with the actual filters in place. I have no comment on the uv lamp. I personally think it's a gimmick, but the blue accent light looks pretty neat, so I keep it on anyway. Im also glad the filters only need to be changed every 6 months or so. I'm going to buy some extra carbon filters, since they're cheap, and do most of what I wanted to begin with (dust and odor removal.) you can probably extend the hepa filter to a year between replacements if that's all you're worried about (like me,) just swap out the stick-on carbon pre-filter every few months.

I've had a few different air purifiers in the past but never really invested much into them so never thought they worked. Having such extreme allergies (pollen, dust, and mold) I finally did my research and invested in this high quality product. Wow! What a difference a good air purifier makes! Waking up the first morning having put it on before bed I was amazed at how clear I could breathe. Having extreme allergies I keep it on in one room and call it my safe room since it's where I go to let my allergies calm down. Haha. I love this product.

So I do love the GermGuardian it works extremely well, and as a long time allergy sufferer it has been a godsend. Honestly though the Filters are extortion which led me to find a very inexpensive alternative to their insanely priced filters. You simply purchase a 14 x 24 X 1 allergen grade home air filter (pictured), and cut it down to fit the unit. This makes about 3 to 4 filters that work just as well and possibly better if you get really high quality filters. I attached a couple pictures, one shows the type of filter and the other is a cut down filter after three months of use (it used to be pure white). The home filter cost me $20, and after cutting it up into 3 pieces each filter for the guardian really only cost me around $7. I attached a link to the Filtrete brand filter which is $32 for a 2 pack which is even cheaper than the Honeywell one I got from Home Depot. Anyway don't be fooled and don't over pay. We have two cats in our 4,000 sq ft house. When my sister came from out of state, she asked if our cats ran away. She said our home had zero odor or scents, which is what I was going for. I have two of these units and one of the next size up. The larger one sits in the doorway of the cats' restroom, one in the master suite, and one in the kitchen. On the lowest setting, dust from the litter box is immediately whisked away and cooking odors do not linger. I prefer the manual operation to the larger unit's electronic controls. We have power outages frequently and the manual units power up as soon as electrical service is restored, but the electronic unit must be turned back on by a human. We live in a more rural area, near large farms and constant construction; with an indoor litter box, the dust accumulation on indoor surfaces became overwhelming, even with my Roomba 650 running five days a week. (My robot picks up cat litter and hair like magic, but isn't much use with fine dust). I've cleaned the filters on all three one time in the almost 90 days since we've had them. I knock the dust out of the pre-carbon filter and blow the HEPA filter out with an air compressor. I used to dust nearly every day, now I dust and deep clean about once a month. I've also noticed I haven't had to treat our long haired cat, who also spends a lot of time outside, for ear mites since February. I did replace the thin pre-carbon filters with a Filtrete brand that you cut to size when I cleaned the units a few weeks ago. I'm attaching photos of the filter I removed and cleaned from the unit closest to the litter box, the before cleaning photo reflects how much dust was collected in a little over two weeks. (I attached a photo of the same filter after knocking the dust out). The other photo is of the furry bastard who throws cat litter and hair all over my house. He's shedding, but I've foiled his plans to make my life a living hell. Thanks to the Roomba and these Germguardian air purifiers, he'll have to be satisfied with annoying the crap out of me in other ways.

This thing has exceeded my expectations. It costs less than 4 bottles (70 count) of non generic allergy medicine. So as someone that had to take allergy medicine daily, after just a few months this sucker will have paid for its self. I set it up in my bedroom and haven’t had to take any since. Well, more like after it had been running for a few days. But still, that’s pretty impressive. Especially since I have two big dogs (fluffy ones that shed the equivalent of a Pomeranian every week) two cats, and a teenager. I’m probably more allergic to the teenager’s dander than the others but it’s illegal to take out an add to “re-home” your teenager so I think this was a great solution. Plus I would never want to do that because I kinda really love the kid and stuff. I also noticed a significant decrease in the amount of drool spots on my pillow now that I’m able to breathe through my nose. Less laundry is a bonus. Now I can take the money I would have been spending on allergy medicine and use it to buy more fun stuff on Amazon.
