Great Instrument.

I began playing the trumpet in 1957 and stopped in 1971 after college. I began playing again, April 3, 2019. I will be traveling in the future, so I wanted to continue practicing while away, so I researched pocket trumpets. I read many reviews on pocket trumpets and brought the Mendini MPT-N Nickel Plated B-flat Trumpet. I had my first practice with this instrument today, June 30, 2019. I love it. This was only the first practice and I will update this review later. I ordered it on a Friday, and it arrived the next day. I oiled the values and it sounds better than my old trumpet, well it will be serviced now. My first impression; it is worth the money, buy the instrument with the stand, I didn’t. My only issue is, the following were missing; the polishing cloth and the gloves. Update: I returned the first trumpet because the third value drain would not screw on properly. It appears after receiving a new replacement, notice, I said new. I am saying the first trumpet was used, because when I received the new one, it was packaged with plastic around the mouthpiece and the gloves and cloth were packed inside the trumpet case, not on the bottom of the shipping box. The first trumpet had a black residue on all three values when it arrived. I still like the trumpet, customer service from Amazon was excellent. They shipped me a new trumpet, that arrived the next day without any hassle.

Great pocket trumpet for the money

You're kidding, right? A little horn that plays well, sounds pretty damned good, comes with a compact case & accessories and it's less than $150 delivered? Sign me up! I had no idea that I was going to enjoy this little horn so much but I'm very impressed with it. I'm going on a 3 week vacation and have gigs as soon as I get home, so I bought this pocket trumpet to travel with. I'm so pleased with this horn. Only caveat is that the tuning is wonky ~ I'll learn the quirks of this pocket trumpet as I go along but out of the box, it's not consistently in tune. Still like it fine for practice.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS HORN!!! My hands are small. This trumpet fits perfectly in my hands. The valves are really fast! The slides work wonderfully. I can hardly believe the big sound I got with little effort. I have not experienced back pressure. The sound is to die for!! I will play this trumpet all day and all night long! I'm hooked and addicted to this cute little trumpet! Woo Hoo!

So you bought a $100 trumpet...

Give or take a few bucks. I picked mine up almost 2 years ago. I won't say I play it often. I've been playing trumpet on and off for over 20 years. My normal horns are a '92 Bach Strat 25 for classical and a '56 Olds Super for jazz. Why'd I buy this? Because it was $120 (when I bought it). TOTALLY worth it. Okay, the bad, first. 1. Feels like it's made out of tinfoil. 2. The stock valve action is 'adequate'. Lap them, or give them a few slides through some 1000 grit sandpaper, then oil them up. Swap in some better springs, and you get much better response. 3. Slide action is decent. I had to take the 1000 grit to the 3rd valve slide, though, to get it more agile. A few twists in the 1000 grit, oil and grease, and it's great. 4. The black lacquer is uneven at the welds and starts flaking off from protrusions almost immediately. 5. Spit valve springs are cheap, and are just mashed against the tubing with no reinforcement. Get yourself some real springs off Ebay, then cushion them with some rubber or plastic. The rubber spit valve pads seem fine. Now the good! 1. With a few mods, you have a horn with decent mechanical action. 2. Comes with the typical 'beginner' mouthpiece, Bach-style 7c, but do yourself a favor and get a 3c. 3. It sounds DECENT. Yes, it actually does. 4. It's tiny and fun. Look at it. IT'S SO ADORABLE! And the case it comes in is pretty good. Nice and padded, but still only about the size of a shoebox. Totally portable. 5. It was $120. Take it to the desert and play in a sandstorm. Dive in a pool and bubble out some Buble under the water. Stick it out the window on the highway doing 105 and see if you can outrun Flight of the Bumblebee. Strip the lacquer off and spray paint it pink with gold glitter sparkles. Who cares! 6. Prop it upright and use it as a kitschy flower pot, a statement to the elasticity of today's high-precision, off-shore brass manufacturing! A lone moth orchid would look especially shway with the flaking, black lacquer. I love this horn. It's fun. I stick my custom mouthpiece in this thing and wail. The bell is so close to your face you hear nothing but sound, and it's not a bad one. The slotting is a little bit weird at first, but it's not impossible with a little practice. I love taking this horn with me wherever I go; you never know when you might come up on a lonely drummer in need of a horn player!

and what a sweet little horn it is

The Mendini Pocket Trumpet arrived yesterday, and what a sweet little horn it is! Unlike some of the reviews I've read, my horn had excellent valve action and compression - I could detect no air leaks blowing against a closed bell. Intonation is fine but not perfect, then again, neither am I after not playing much for the past several decades. I've been playing a E M Winston silver-plated flugelhorn for the past few months, as well as carrying a mouthpiece around to work on my embouchure in idle moments, especially while driving. The Winston flugelhorn , like the Mendini, is not a professional premium instrument but certainly sounds very good for the price. The Mendini feels solid and well made. I oiled the valves with the provided oil, but will replace it with Blue Juice as I think it's a better lubricant. The slides work smoothly but stiffly, and will get some lubrication also in the next few days. At this price point, I have to call it an amazing deal for a quality instrument. Not professional quality, but perfectly adequate for practice and travel. And I need to practice ALOT before a more expensive instrument makes any sense.

Nice Pocket Trumpet - Cheap As Chips!

I wasn't expecting much given the low price, but I was, and continue to be, surprised how good this instrument is. I learned trumpet at school in England from my early teens on, and have been playing on and off ever since (44 years so far). I ordered it mostly to take on airline trips for practice when I travel around - it fits nicely (in its case) in my backpack. I swapped the mouthpiece out for a 3C as others have noted in their reviews. The black lacquer is NOT peeling off mine anywhere. It seems to be very well built, using solid metal (it certainly cannot be described as feeling like it's made of tin-foil as one reviewer said). The valve action is excellent - all I had to do was clean the valves and the bores thoroughly, add a few dabs of synthetic oil, and play. The springs seem quite adequate to me. No need to replace them at all. We'll see how they hold up over time though. Spit valve is nicely centered and water-tight on mine....no issues there. The sound is what surprised me the most. I was expecting the intonation to be off a bit, and for it to sound "tinny", but none of these fears was realized. The intonation is actually pretty good; not as good as my Bach or Kanstul trumpets, but really pretty good! The tone is bright and airy. It's a pleasure to play. I will probably use it for more than just practice! Did I mention it is REALLY INEXPENSIVE? I have no idea how they manage to make such a good instrument for so little, but I'm very glad they do!!

Small enough for a child.

My daughter became obsessed with the idea of playing the trumpet (thanks to an episode of Mr. Rogers featuring Wynton Marsalis), and was asking me for one constantly. I finally caved and ordered this pocket trumpet for her 4th birthday, figuring that she'd never be able to make a sound come out. To my surprise, she was able to get a pretty decent sound out of it the first time she tried. We've since been watching YouTube trumpet lessons so she can learn to hold it correctly, etc., and she's enjoying blowing her horn. Yes, it's loud, but I figure it's good for building lung capacity. The trumpet, by the way, is solidly built and quite beautiful. It's real trumpet, not a child's trumpet. It's almost impossible to see this trumpet and not want to pick it up and play it.

What a great horn! How do they make it for such an affordable price? An unbelievable value.

I'm just getting back into trumpet after a twenty year break and wanted a practice instrument that I could toss in the car or leave around the kitchen without worrying about it. This little guy does the job and more! It sounds just as good as my full sized horn. My full sized straight mute fits just fine. I have been playing it daily for three weeks and I haven't had to oil a valve yet. It's also durable. I dropped it from standing height, bounced it off of the piano and onto the floor. It dented the bell and bent the lead tube, but I was able to bend it back into shape by hand. I would recommend this horn to anyone! One note: it took me a while to find the tuning slide. It's on the second bend of the lead tube - not on the first bend like a full sized horn. -jf Edit one year later: Still an amazing horn and a great value. One tip: don't use the valve oil that comes with the horn. It builds up over time and slows down the valves. I switched to Blue Juice and almost never need to reapply oil.

Greatly exceeded expectations

This won't please trumpet snobs, and it doesn't hold the pedigree of an expensive trumpet brand, and your super expensive horn is probably better, but this trumpet is of good quality and good sound. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It sounds exactly like a trumpet - this was the most important part. Even if the tuning is off out of the box (the slides are pushed all the way in when you open it) Cecilio went the extra step and threw in a digital tuner. From unwrapping to playing all i did was wipe off the valves and give them some blue juice (Cecilio threw in some oil too but i've got reservations about non-blue oil), then tuned it after a few minutes of playing. It's compatible with the mutes for a normal trumpet or cornet. It weighs about the same as my beat up trumpet so the reports of it feeling cheap or aluminum are greatly exaggerated. I was very impressed by it's overall quality. There are two tiny flaws in the lacquer which is slightly unevenly applied but i had to really play with it and stare at it to notice those. The felt pads on the valves aren't great but that's an easy fix - and has no bearing on playing or even appearance in all but the most well-lit areas. The amount of stuff you get is remarkable as well. The case is very high quality, includes a mouthpiece (I used my own but the included mouthpiece is good enough to keep as a backup if not your primary) a good polishing cloth (i mean real good), and some white gloves made of t-shirt material which i'll never use but still pretty cool. There's nowhere really to store the included tuner in the case but you don't really need to tune a trumpet all that often, and this thing was clearly meant to be taken around town, played at the spur of the moment. If you already have a regular trumpet but don't like lugging the thing around, or if you're thinking of busking on a corner somewhere and have reservations about taking your 400-1200 dollar horn out, or if you just like the idea of a pocket trumpet, this is perfect.

Gorgeous

We bought this for my daughter who’s in her first year of band. She started with my husband’s standard trumpet from when he was a kid but we wanted her to have her own instrument. We got it for her as a birthday gift and she was so happy she cried and then proceeded to play it right away. She thinks it’s beautiful (which it is) and plays perfectly. She’s gotten compliments from her band instructor for how well it plays and sounds. Because it came with a case it’s easy for her to take back and forth between home and school and she loves all the extras it came with too. It has been worth every penny. Don’t hesitate! Get it. You’ll definitely be happy you did!
