The size is perfect for two full-sized vegetable meals (think, two big bowls of broccoli), which is definitely great because my husband and I love having steamed veggies for dinner--with just a tablespoon of olive oil and lemon juice and a slice of bread. Yummy! Works perfectly, just remember not to face the lid as you open it or the hot vapour will burn you :)

1. Buy pre-washed broccoli florets and toss some into the steamer 2. Add water 3. Microwave for 3-5 min on high You get consistently perfect steamed broccoli with very little effort. I use this steamer daily and now have some form of steamed veg with every meal. What prompted me to purchase a microwave steamer was reading reports from nutrition scientists like this one: "As far as vegetables go, cooking them in water robs them of some of their nutritional value because the nutrients leach out into the cooking water. For example, boiled broccoli loses glucosinolate, the sulfur-containing compound that may give the vegetable its cancer-fighting properties (as well as the taste that many find distinctive and some find disgusting). Is steaming vegetables better? In some respects, yes. For example, steamed broccoli holds on to more glucosinolate than boiled or fried broccoli. The cooking method that best retains nutrients is one that cooks quickly, heats food for the shortest amount of time, and uses as little liquid as possible. Microwaving meets those criteria. Using the microwave with a small amount of water essentially steams food from the inside out. That keeps more vitamins and minerals than almost any other cooking method." From: [...]

This is the only size to get. It holds a small bag of cut vegetables, enough for maybe 2-3 people. You'll have to guess about how long to go with your specific microwave but this is a GREAT product! Add water to the bottom, drop the basket in flat, then add vegetables and click down the 4 side things. No waiting for the water to come to a boil to start steaming. I use the water for soup bases too. Love this company's products, all have been excellent. But the little steamer is too tiny to be useful. Love their rice maker too.

I think that this steamer is a steal! For a low price, I now am able to steam my vegetables every day and it is a breeze! I can fit two whole heads of broccoli in here, four zucchini, or even a whole bag of green beans no problem. I would say that on average it takes 10 minutes for the vegetables to cook (considering that I like mine very soft). I love that I can steam so many vegetables at once, and it has increased my daily vegetable consumption. However, the steamer is large, so when it is in my small microwave, it has a hard time spinning a full 360 degrees. But I do not think that this problem has affected its ability to steam my vegetables. It is also hard to close the tabs sometimes, but this is only an irritant to me. If you need a way to steam your vegetables easily, do not hesitate to get this!

i have the larger one (the medium one). i love this one, i actually use it way more, but then i am one person. for me, the smallest steamer is the one i use, it fits the am't of veggies, whatever, that i am making. it's an awesome device. i am a person who does not cook, and yet i am steaming veggies, making that baked (well, steamed i guess) potato, easy as pie. just remember to keep the steam vent open. bingo. cleanup is a dream. i noticed some of these sistema things at a store, that were cheaper than online. but i do love these things. they have changed my life, for the better. they are wonderful, they work so well. i even use them for just plain containers, why not. they're sturdy, and wash up in a jiffy. 5 stars.

I just received this today in time for lunch. I put in a piece of corn and some broccoli crowns. I had to fool around a little with the time, starting with 3 minutes and then adding two minutes. All came out perfect. I looked at the Systema website for recipes but they don't give how much time to cook things as microwaves vary. So, it does take some figuring out. My suggestion is to start in small increments and add time until whatever you are cooking comes out the way you want it, then jot it down so you remember next time. Still, very handy and energy saving. I like vegetables steamed rather than boiled so this is perfect for me.

I have several Sistema microwave products. I used this large steamer for the first time today. I cooked fresh steamed vegetables in it. It did a terrific job. It cooked every bit as well as my counter top steamer and was a lot faster to clean after use. The vegetables retained their flavor and cooked perfectly. The texture was perfect also. I fixed cabbage, carrots, and large brussel sprouts. There was more than enough room. I could have easily fit in more vegetables. I purchased both the medium and large size steamer because I eat a plant based diet. I probably could have used the medium size. Tomorrow I'll try it. I also have the cooking mugs in several sizes. I use them for rice a roni and soup because they don't spill over when cooking. You can also bake the cake in a cup in the cooking mugs. Overall I am very impressed with all of these microwave containers. They have held up to constant use and are just like new. Very pleased with this product!!! Just a tip: I set this container on top of a round microwave bacon cooker type plate. It is just the right size to set underneath the steamer and makes it easy to remove from the microwave after cooking. My microwave is up high over my stove and sometimes I have difficulty removing hot containers so I have started setting them on top of my old bacon cooker that I bought years ago from a local chain store. This works well for me.

Received this yesterday a day early. We have Prime, ordered it Saturday morning and it was at our door Sunday afternoon. My husband has never encountered a veggie steamer and was pleased with the overall design and ease of use. We have a couple Sistema salad bowls and they work great and are designed similarly to this product. The flip lock closures on the sides are golden. We filled the bottom with a cup of water, any more will touch your veggies. We cooked a yellow squash and it came out perfectly. My husband was shocked at the quality of not only using fresh produce but the vast difference between the frozen veggie steam bags from the grocery store. What was great is that we can put only the quantity of veggies that we need since my daughter is 5 and refuses veggies, so it's just my husband and myself to eat them and we usually have soggy leftovers from frozen veggies. I was able to take the container right out of the microwave with bare hands on the tabs at the corner. I flipped up all four locking tabs and was able to use two of them to open it and deflect the steam from myself. These are easy to clean, hold up well and can definitely go in the dishwasher. I don't think it came with instructions, but my husband found a cooking guide for this specific product and told me you can cook a lasagna for 6 in it.

I'll be completely honest, I've yet to use this thing to steam anything. I bought it as I was going into a fitness kick and, well, we all know how that goes. However, this is an AMAZING storage bowl. Keeps leftovers like a boss...though you do have to remove that steamer thingy on the inside. Look, I know it isn't suppose to hold leftovers and there are probably better leftover holding bowls to purchase, but stowing away pizza in this thing helps soothe the buyers remorse, okay?!

I got this to cook rice, because our Asian-style rice cooker stopped working ㅠㅠ Instead of spending tons of money on a new cooker or burning rice on the stovetop, I decided to try microwaving it. Sistema has a rice steamer too, but I figured the steaming basket in this one would come in handy some day. The only differences I can see are the shape of the container and amount of holes for steaming, which doesn't make much of a difference overall. How to cook rice in this steamer: 1. Pour in desired amount of rice 2. Rinse and drain 2-3 times 3. Pour in water according to instructions on the rice bag, or use tip of index finger to measure from the top of leveled rice until water reaches halfway to the first knuckle (crease)--most will tell you to measure to the knuckle, but my mom taught me otherwise for jasmine rice 4. Optional to soak 30 min for fluffier rice 5. Microwave for 5 min on high (100%) or until you see bubbling from the steam, switch to 50% power until you see bubbling, then 30% until total cooking time totals 10-12 min. You'll know it's done steaming when you tilt the container and the rice doesn't slide. 6. Leave to rest 5 min, then fluff with fork before serving. If rice is still a bit undercooked, add 1/4 cup water and microwave for another 2 min on high, repeat if necessary. This worked well for me, but can get a bit messy from the bubbling steam (makes something like rice paper on top of the container hah). I have a lot of Sistema containers and particularly like the ones with the steamer hole. Overall, very satisfied with the purchase.
