Buy if you love the outdoors
Excellent quality, hopefully I never have to use it. This sort of device will greatly increase your odds of being found. ACR devices directly communicate with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite network which is a government branch, so you will get a faster response than something like SPOT which uses a privately ran network ($$) and center that processes signals and forwards them to the government. When you use your device NOAA will get a ping with your location and individual id number, which will bring up your information (given you register it) that they will forward it to the closest search and rescue coordinator. My roommate is on a search and rescue team and this makes their jobs much easier. Personal beacons will help you get found sooner, which can mean life or death in some situations. Just recently my roommate went on a search for some dirt bikers that got in an accident deep in the Nevada desert, one of the guys had a beacon and his friend was badly injured, they were found and his friend got to the hospital within 2 hours (by helicopter, and he lived).

So far I love it. ONLY TO BE USED IN GRAVE DANGER OR INMINWNT LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS.
I registered the unit and keyed up the complete test signal which has to be done in the top 10 minutes of the hour. It found both the noaa and gps satellite and I got confirmation it was working. Have never had to activate. But it provides piece of mind when out alone. Also provides a little comfort to my relatives who worry when I’m sleeping in places with no cell coverage that if I get into trouble I’ll be able to call for help. Also has eliminated the need to do the “I’m going to be in this area out of cell range, if you don’t hear from my by X time please call 911 and give them my location” texts I used to send to a couple friends. This is to be activated in GRAVE OR imminent LIFE THREATENING DANGER when there is no cell service and no other way to communicate and death is coming if help cannot be gotten.

A must have for outdoor adventures!
I bought this to carry on my outdoor adventures. I got a one year subscription to 406 link too which is a good idea and cheap but not a must. I feel so much safer having this ACR PLB with me. I broke my leg while mountain biking alone in the mountains, luckily this time I was able to ride down the mountain and wait on someone to come along due to no cell service. My friends were pissed that I did not have a PLB to get myself help. Shortly after this accident I bought this ACR PLB and feel so much better having it. It is really small, and packs in a small case I carry on my side along with a small strobe light, and lighter. I highly recommend getting a 406 link subscription. It allows you to send a present text and email to friends and family along with unlimited tests which are sent straight to your cell phone or email. I told my wife that if she get 3 of my preset messages something is wrong. You will want to test your PLB occasionally to make sure it is working properly. 406 link only costs about $60 a year. Ivwould highly recommend this unit to anyone going out of cell phone service for any reason. I have a friend who is a commercial pilot and he never leaves home without one of these.

No monthly service fee!
Do not need a texting device, nor do I want to pay a monthly fee. This is the perfect unit. If you need it, turn it on, push the button and it will bring rescue services. Otherwise, light weight on the pack. Battery lasts for years.

Peace of Mind
Why 5 stars? Well, I haven't had to use it in an emergency, but peace of mind for me and my family is invaluable. I use it while backpacking and I go solo and off-trail a lot. It's small and light enough that there is never an excuse not to have it on my person. I've tested the GPS locator feature twice and it failed to catch a signal once and caught it another time. I'd have to say you need to heed the instruction to have a VERY clear view of the sky in all directions. The time that it failed there were tall trees to the south and that apparently was enough to cause failure. In a real emergency it will keep trying to catch and update GPS coordinates every few minutes. When doing the GPS test, watch the flashing LED's constantly because it flashes confirmation or failure only once, then stops. Registration with NOAA/SARSAT was smooth and easy online; and built a lot of confidence in the utility of this unit.

Five Stars
Robust Design. Wish it had a belt clip on the back.

a great comfort
I have been fortunate enough to never have used my PLB but if it works as described it has to be a great safety device for people that do a lot of back-country camping. I have taken mine with me on elk hunting trips in both Idaho and Nevada as well as on several horseback type pack trips into very remote areas of Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Nevada. Simply knowing that help can be notified in the event of a serious accident or illness has been a great comfort. It would be nice if it were possible to let rescuers know the type of problem you were having so that they would be better prepared to cope with it on their arrival. But I guess we'll have to wait a little longer until satellite phone service becomes more affordable and dependable.

Peace of mind in a small package
Bought this for my husband. He takes safety and survival seriously, so when he said this was the next survival gear piece he needed I was happy to buy it. He goes out in the wilderness on his ATV and if he were lost or crashed, he could easily die. So this gives me peace of mind. You test it, and register it with NOAA, and then hope you don't lose it. After 5 years, you send it back for a battery. If you use it, they replace it. I wanted to make sure that it really worked so I checked out the survivor club online. Even found one for a motorcyclist that got stranded in my area (Sierra Foothills of CA), also found an ATV story. So I'm satisfied that with this device we will avert many dangers.

Added peace of mind
I gave it 5 stars even though I have never used it and hopefully never will. It is additional peace-of-mind and resides in a chest pocket of my armored mesh jacket, so it's always there on a ride. It is as small as the smallest cell phones so it is not in the way or even really noticed. To me this is a no-brainer. I'm no Evel Knevel or other dare devil but I understand stuff can happen regardless of the best planning and preparation. Where there isn't cell coverage, there is the ResQ Link PLB.

Great for backpacking too!
Way better than the GeoSpot. I had nothing but problems with that company, and their customer service was horrible. The final blow was when I discovered after a remote backpacking trip that they had cut off my coverage 6 months before and never informed me, leaving me unprotected without realizing it. With ACR ResQlink, you can rely on the US coast guard/NOAA to monitor the emergency beacon, much more reliable than some random company.
