One of the best LED emergency lights available for the price
UPDATE: ======= * Friendly tip --> As there are 9 modes, it is a little tedious to scroll through them all to turn the unit off. But you can abort the current mode and go directly to off. Just press and hold the power button. In about 2 seconds, the unit will acknowledge your command, rapidly flash a single red LED for a split second an then shut off. This is NOT documented in the instructions. ============================================================================================ I was a little skeptical of this when I saw it listed on Amazon. Usually LED lights made by companies that aren't known for powerful lighting tend to be sub-par. I was concerned that the LED's in this would end up being like the cheap $5 flashlights you find at Wal*Mart. Well, the 15 LED's are actually quite powerful. They would certainly work well in darkened conditions to alert oncoming traffic of your position. Up to 1 mile, as claimed by the manufacturer? Perhaps under really ideal conditions. I'd say a 1/2 mile just to be safe. What's a little confusing at first is how to actually use this thing. The lights are visible from the top and sides, so do you mount it horizontal or vertical? You can do either, depending upon the needs of the situation. The best thing is to place this on the roof of a car, so that you have a 360 degree visibility. There are 9 light patterns to choose from. The last two are interesting--either 1 or 5 lights on continuously. This allows it to be used as a low-high intensity flashlight.(albeit in a red cast). The flashlight mode really gives this light tremendous versatility (you wouldn't be able to read anything in the dark with lights constantly flashing). The two most useful modes are the 360 degree rotating or flashing lights. There's also a mode to have all lights on slightly dim, which is good for general illumination like inside a car cabin. The black plastic feels pretty sturdy, although I was expecting something rubberized and thicker. But it's partially flexible and does appear to be durable. As others have noted, there aren't any instructions given about replacing the battery. But it is possible--two screws on the bottom allow you to separate the UFO light into two pieces, which then provides access to the battery (a lithium CR123). Given how energy efficient LED's are, it is very likely you'll not need to replace the battery for a few years. CR123 cells are known to have superior shelf life compared to AA, AAA, and C type cells. Is this a substitute for flares? Generally I don't think so. However, it is an excellent supplement especially after flares die down. I am going to buy some of these for family members--every car should have one. 4.5 STARS -- I would have preferred a user accessible battery compartment, rather than having to disassemble the unit. They seem to have done this for enhanced water resistance without increasing cost, but I'd have gladly paid another $2-3 to have a water tight sealed battery compartment that doesn't require full disassembling of the unit.

So far so good
This is a very solidly constructed LED flare replacement. I have also purchased the flareAlert kit as a gift and like this flare better, as it is better built, waterproof, and brighter although it is significantly more expensive. It is very bright, has 9 different light patterns (of which about three are probably useful, although it has a flashlight mode for use in a pinch that could be handy) the magnet is quite strong and easily able to securely hold the light to any metal surface. The use of a lithium disposable battery is a positive in my opinion as it should have a long shelf life and still works well at low temperatures. I will be purchasing more for use in my other vehicles.

SAFETY AT IT'S FINEST
Extremely bright with 9 different settings for my protection. I travel a lot at night and if I would get a flat this would go on the roof for a warning to other motorist that there is a disabled vehicle ahead. This light will make my fears feel better, there are a lot of ARIZONA drivers that can seem to see 4 way flashers on vehicles disabled on the side of the road. This is just a fantastic SAFETY FLASHER. I will be ordering more for my wife and my children. This is just a great design, you see more lights with the triangle design. This product is a WINNER !!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for a GREAT PRODUCT ......................................

The perfect Flare for the perfect Storm
I was on a back country hilly road with my wife and brother and his wife in the car behind. My car stalled, and in the middle of a narrow dark country road that was in a dip between two hills.. My brother had to maneuver his car to hook up the jumper cables. I had one small led flashlight, and my brother's car had nothing for emergency illumination. We got the car started and on our way, but we realized how vulnerable we would have been, had there been cars traveling in either direction.. A major accident would have taken place. I vowed to get flares, checked on Amazon, and BANG I found the perfect flares. The magnetic bottom, to place anywhere on the car, and you will be seen in the dead of night. I bought one, was so impressed, I purchased three more. One for my wife's car, and one each for my brothers cars. I know feel safe that they will be prepared for any night time or daytime emergency while on the road. The flashing and strobbing or chase leds can be seen FOREVER!! I got the universal red, but they are available in different emergency colors.. and a very reasonable price for safety.

A must for any vehicle
I do s lot of motorcycle riding, wither it's alone or with groups. Not every ride is going to be perfect...like insurance, one needs to be prepared for a malfunctioned bike (or vehicle), or an accident. I keep 3 discs inside the saddlebags of each of my bikes. I just used my led discs for the first time when one of my friends went down on his bike on a canyon road. I spread out the LED discs along the curve to warn oncoming vehicles to slow down due to the wreckage. This worked great, during daylight, it is better to place the disc in a shaded area so the LEDS pop more. There are different flash sequences, so you can choose which one you want that meets the needs of that situation. When the police officers and fire truck arrived, they saw my LED discs and complemented me indicated "those are cool." These discs are way better than flares in the forestry/ canyon area, as these discs will not cause any forest fires. These discs are also magnetic for those who want to place it on their vehicle.

Terrific product.
I had been looking at a similar product but with a retail of 25% more plus it only had rechargeable batteries, and I chose to go with the Smittybilt model. I opened the package and pressed the power button (very easily done but you might have to remove your hand glove in the winter) and the unit began to produce a very bright LED pattern. The unit is about the size of a hockey puck and the black area is a rubber shock absorbing framework protecting the LED's and appears to be nearly indestructible. The light is as I said very bright, when looking directly at it, it will blind you temporarily! It has a strong magnet on the bottom and the battery is a replaceable Lithium found at any store selling batteries and it's good down to -40 F so you don't have to worry about the unit being unusable while being stored in your car all winter. I bought 4, but I'll buy probably 8 more since I have 4 cars and I'd like there to be 3 in each car.

Smart, Simple, Cheap
All services like AAA are moving away from road flares. (Turns out flaming sticks on/near the roadside is a bad idea - who knew?) Magnet base so you can make it rotate the light and stick it on the vehicle, long life battery size easily found at Walmart, etc. No brainer for places where it’s seasonally dark a lot (like Alaska).

Great safety item for your glovebox
Have not had to use this, but if the time comes, it definitely will not be ignored by oncoming traffic or for whatever I use it. Vehicle, lost in the woods, camping alert, you name it. This thing has multiple flashing modes, any one of which will attract attention. Very bright LED lights in a number of selectable rotating paterns. Stake your roadside life on an orange cone or triangles if you wish, but this is more like a nonflammable flare. There are other makers in the market; this one is a reasonable price for a good safety item.

Great little emergeny light.
This is one great little light to carry in your car. It has a strobe, flashing light and even a single light along with several other modes. It can be seen in the dark from a long distance in case you have to stop in the dark and has a powerful magnet that you can place on the hood, truck or roof of you car or where ever you think it has the best chance of being seen in the dark. Either way, it is great for emergencies. Especially if you are waiting for help in a dark spot and the only way to find you is if this light is flashing... you can't be missed with it!!

Great light.
The light is alright in my book had it over a year just used it a few times battery dies pretty quickly but after a few uses. You can replace the battery here on amazon. My magnet fell awhile ago replace with velcro instead much better for my uses for my mountain bike.
