Maybe I got this for myself - don't judge me.

My Cairn Terrier immediately loved the Medium pad, which was incredible because he's never enjoyed anything I've purchased for him (that he can't eat). Upon noticing how quickly the Medium got cool and how HOT-AS-THE-BALLS-OF-THE-SUN it was outside, I thought I deserved my own place to chill. The XL doesn't cool as throughly or quickly as the Medium, but it's still comfy. My mom accidentally bought a similar product but different brand. Her dog won't go near it; it's weirdly squishy in a way that feels like it's filled with sand. When he tried out "The Green Pet Shop" pad, he liked it. I've been recommending this product to strangers in the park, most of whom were not weird about me shouting product recommendations at them.

Cats love it! Works better even than anticipated

We had high hopes for this mat, as our two Siberian cats (very fluffy, long hair) were miserable and nearly over-heating with the recent heat spell in Northern California. Even with plenty of water around the house and all the shades drawn, temps in the apt during the day were unbearable, especially for little furry creatures. The day we received the mat, we laid it out and almost immediately (out of curiosity) our older cat came to lay on the new object. Once she realized that the pressure of her body activated the cool sensation from the mat (still don't know how this technology works), she couldn't be bothered to move (**see photo**). Now they both love this thing, and we don't have to worry about their long hot days in the house. Highly reccomend.

Doggy cool

It feels cool to the touch to me. My 72lb Lab mix lays on it all the time. We placed it over his favorite spot where he lays in the family room. He took to it right away and even tries to bunch it up by scratching it before he lies down. I've read other reviews warning how easy it is to puncture but that hasn't been the case with his scratching at it. My dog doesn't chew on things he's not suppose to so I don't worry about that either. UPDATE: The mat is coming in extra handy helping with my dogs rehab after surgery on his back leg as the photo indicates. Although, I ice it several times a day, doctors orders, he lays on the mat most of the time at this early point in his 8 week recovery. I'm pretty sure that cool mat is feeling really good after his TPLO procedure.

Works beautifully for us

I have four of these pads. Two large for the bed and near the door. Two smaller for a window table and a chair. They work very well. My dog is 16 lbs. I like the large because once one side is no longer cool, after @ 3-4 hours, she just switches sides. So, she can stay cool all night this way. She loves the pads. I'd recommend buying or making covers. The cover is made out of the same arterial as your average bed sheet. It doesn't effect the cooling at all. A cover could be easily made from a sheet, if you don't want to buy one. We've had two of our pads for over a year, and they still look and work as well as they did the first day. No hardening. She uses them through the year, so I don't store them. That might be a reason. Follow the directions for storage--Don't just put it away or fold it and put it in a closet. The pads and covers I got are all well constructed. I went over them carefully. I would not, however, get them if you have a dog who might chew or scratch them apart. The gel inside is said to be non-toxic, but I wouldn't want my pet to ingest it. I also definitely would not use this with puppies for the same reason. If you're concerned, You might check in with your vet before buying. My dog is not a chewer, and our pads are as good as they were from day one. This is not a substitute for air conditioning, fans, etc. It will not keep your pet cool enough to be safe in a hot car, for example. It keeps them cooler, but not completely cool in a place that's too hot for them to be in the first place. It's basically as cool as a very cool tile floor. Same effect, but lasts longer. We love them.

A good purchase

My dog always had issues with being overly heated because of her thick, fluffy coat. Even with the air conditioning on, she'd lie there and pant. I bought this mat and put it in her favorite spot (the tile in front of the fire place.) For a few days, she was suspicious of it and avoided it, and I started to think I'd have to return it, but then she started lying on it, and wow, what a difference! She's comfortable! Occasionally, I'll see her turn over as if one side is "done" and sigh with contentment. I think it must be the same feeling I have at night when I flip over to the cool side of the pillow. The mat is only about half an inch thick, but I think it gives some padding for her elderly bones, too. It's right beside her water bowl, so its waterproof covering has gotten a test and passed with flying colors.

I cannot say enough great things about this pad

I cannot say enough great things about this pad. Our dog is a 55 pound Golden Retriever and was so hot at night in our bedroom. We don't have great ventilation in that part of the house and he was panting and pacing every night since we moved in. On top of that, my husband is extremely hot bodied, so we were all uncomfortable with how hot it was. We bought a fan and that worked for my husband and I but definently not our dog. I hated that he was so uncomfortable, I started researching solutions for dogs. There are SO many different pads out there, it was hard to make the decision which one when your handing out a good amount of change for a dog, just hoping that it'll work. THIS PRODUCT IS LIFE CHANGING FOR OUR DOG. I cannot say enough good things about this product. He absolutely loves it and there is no more uncomfortable nights for him. When we received this product in the mail, all I did was open the box, take out the pad and laid it on the floor in our room. That's it. No filling it with water or anything like that. It did take him about a week to figure out that it was for him and that he should lay on it, but that's with anything new with a dog besides a smelly bone. I want to get another one for our living room at some point, not because it's hot, but because he just really enjoys it. We dog sit at my Dad's house a lot, and when we go over there, we bring the pad and his dogs always try to sleep on it too. I cannot say enough great things about this product. Do yourself and your dog a favor and get the Self Cooling Pet Pad!

If you have a "big" dog like retrievers, large is not large enough for them ...

My Cocker Spaniel girl loves this mat. I got 2 Large for her and put one (new version) in the living room and the other one (old version) in the bathroom. She can fully stretch her body on it. This is must for her every summary. Try the new & improved version. As someone mentioned. it is thicker and softer than the old version. Well, my Cocker girl loves both versions though. Be careful when choosing the mat size. If you have a "big" dog like retrievers, large is not large enough for them for sure. Large is good for Cocker Spaniel size.

Pet Mat for humans

I must admit that I bought the Self Cooling Pet Mat for myself. I have no Pet, but very hot feet in the summertime. While I have to spend hours on the computer, I place my bare feet on the Pet Mat, and in no time my whole body cools down. It works really wonderfully and saves me lots of money, by not having to turn on the Air conditioner too often. Living in an all electric home in Southern California, where electricity is outrageously high, it saves me a lots of money.....my bills no longer double during the hot times. I can strongly recommend this Pet Mat for humans

I have a Golden Retriever that is not very tolerant of heat. He has a very thick, long coat and is pretty miserable anytime it's over 75 degrees. I also have an older lab mix. I purchased this mat initially with my Golden in mind. I set the mat on the floor and initially he avoided it, but when I put it on top of his dog bed - I found the magic combination. He figured out that it was meant to lie on, but so did my older dog. They used to each stay on their own beds, but now they both want to be on the chill mat. I will be buying another one now - so they can each have their own! My older dog also has some mild hip issues. She tends to be uncomfortable lying on anything hard, so she never wants to stay outside long. I have been taking the mat outside, and she is much more content to lie on it, doesn't ask to be let in right away like she does without it. I've seen that others have had issues getting their dog to accept it - but as stated, both my dogs loved it as soon as I put it on top of their bed. Just to test it, I have pulled the mat off and put it next to the bed. They go to the mat now and ignore their bed. Nevertheless, for the old dog, I just think it's more comforable to put the mat on top of her bed, and she loves it!

Awesome awesome awesome at a rapid cool down, even for a giant furry Newfoundland. He wasn’t hot anymore within about 3 mins. But buyer beware- I have a dog who has NEVER chewed before, and when this mat absorbed his warmth he was so frustrated/eager to somehow get it back to its magical cooling state that he started digging and pulling at it. It is their instinct to dig for cooler ground so my guy was ready to shred this thing day 1. If you want to be sure your pup is safe from whatever ingestible material is inside, get more than one or your dog will get super frustrated after 30 mins. XL is a good fit for a Newfoundland but my Newfy does cover the whole thing (130-140lbs). This product can’t be flipped over for a cooler side. When it absorbs their body heat it absorbs it all the way through. It took approx 20 minutes to cool again. 2 should solve the frustration problem so he can go back and forth.
