Have now used these chocolate Clif Shots for 5 Marathons, excellent! When I first started doing longer races, I experimented by including the caffeine Clif Shot (+50 mg and also the +100 mg) during latter portions of a run. Had stomach issues with those. Ultimately, the decision as to which Clif Shots you use is very subjective, especially because you have to pair them with hydration that works for you. I carry a water bottle and use Nuun electrolyte tablets since Nuun with the chocolate Clif Shots have worked great together and have sustained me in all of my long runs with no digestive issues whatsoever. Experiment for yourself--buy single Clif Shots at a sports/running store. When you've found the right ones for YOU (i.e. particular flavor? caffeine or not?), come back to Amazon to buy them much cheaper in bulk. If I could give this product more than 5 stars, I would.

Top line: A great tasting, easy to digest caffeine boost on race day or for long training runs. Good: I love my coffee, and a nice caffeine jolt never hurts before a long run or race. Unfortunately, consuming 20oz of coffee right before (or worse, during!) can have unpleasant impact on both your stomach and bladder. Enter the Clif Shot, specifically *Double Espresso*. Forget those other wimpy 30mg caffeine gus--these bad boys pack a whopping 100mg (2.5 cups of coffee), and do it with a great flavor that is not too sweet and easy going down. I'll consume 4-5 of these during an early morning marathon, and they keep me alert and feeling great! Value is also pretty good when you buy in bulk (compared to $1.50+ per gu at the race expo). Bad: As with any gu-style energy gel, it's generally not a great idea to eat one without water. If you're not carrying water on your long run, this limits where and how often you can take them (less of an issue in races with regular water stops). I also hate running with sticky hands, so I have to be very careful not to make a mess when eating at high speed. Other: My enthusiasm for this product has a lot to do with the powerful caffeine dose and great flavor of the Double Espresso variety. Other flavors of Clif Shot are decent tasting, but low to no caffeine, so I don't use them nearly as often. YMMV.

I am a gym owner and I organize races every once in a while for my clients. I ordered a box of these to give to some of my clients and for my own use during our last race which was a half marathon. I had tried other gels befores, but this was my first time with these, and all I can say is WOW. I took half in the first half of the race and I felt the energy. But then I took more on the send half, just as I was starting to get fattigued, and it was las BOOM!. I did the last miles feeling great and at an awesome pace! you can really feel the difference. Then at the and of the race all of my clients wouldn't stop commenting on these gels! they were all very happy. I'm definetily going to keep using these for all my events!

I use these to assist with managing my type 1 insulin dependant diabetes. This product has litteraly changed my life. They are great for managing low blood sugar ( hypoglycemia ). The packaging is VERY durable and can be kept in a pocket for weeks without failing. The packaging is also very thin so I can keep 3 in one jeans pocket without any discomfort. The amount of carbohydrate that is contained is such a small amount of gel is awesome. The digestion of the carbs is faster then anything I've ever experienced, in my own experience it beginsto raise my blood sugar instantly. I do not experience any siggnificant drop off in blood sugar later on either, I think they specially formulated it so it lasts longer in your blood then most sweets. Way simpler then keeping bulky amounts of soft drinks or candies that can melt. Great for exercising too as it can fit easily in work out shorts. If you came looking because of diabetes GIVE IT A TRY! This Clif brand is much better tasting and the packaging is hands down better then the GU brand. I tried GU for a few months and the packaging bursts, the gel consistancy isn't very good, and the flavors are not enjoyable.

A second cup of coffee during the day often makes me jittery and irritable without boosting my mental focus, and energy drinks aren't very convenient to bring along to a hike or run. The Clif Shot gel travels well due to its compact size and wakes me up without the jitters—making it an ideal choice not only for physical activity but also for the afternoon slump at the desk. As an added bonus, I haven't experienced the crash that follows so many other caffeine highs. Perhaps this is because the caffeine contained in the Clif gel is derived from green tea as opposed to coffee? Your mileage may vary, of course. But I think I've found the pick-me-up that's right for me.

I'm certainly no "hotdogger"--I'm slow but I'm consistent. I'm an old cowhand--er, distance runner--from the Rio Grande, and I'm still running and racing into my retirement. But after a lot of miles, I start getting tired and clumsy. It used to be like, at 6 miles, I was ready to get an upload of sports drink, or if I was still out on a trail, a bite of something full of energy. (Now, it's more like 2 to 3 miles.) At any rate, I've found that by carrying one or two of these li'l packets in my shorts and having one along the way, the energy and control boost is amazing! It's all new to me. Without naming names, it is simply the best, smallest, most convenient and effective boost to my running energy and awareness I've ever, ever experienced. I totally, strongly recommend these li'l bits of power to anyone who trains out long miles, 'specially if you don't go back to your V-hickle for water or Gatorade or whatever for a while yet. And, they have these ecologically smart innovations--the tab you tear off remains attached to the main body of the li'l packet, for you to carry on back to your V-hickle for proper disposal in the trash. I'm so glad I discovered thot thar thang!

I shoot a pack before a morning run, in order to get some calories in me without a full stomach. I also use them while hunting, to keep myself going without stopping to eat, and to give me a burst of energy after dropping an animal that has to be quickly butchered and packed out. The caffeine is an extra benefit, but the important part is the quick 100 calories that doesn’t require a lot of digestion to access. Eating a mouthful of goo isn’t super pleasant, but the flavor is ok and it goes down pretty easy. One pack and a pint of water is perfect.

I've used Clif Mocha gels since 2009 when I hit the wall at the Marine Corps Marathon around mile 22 because I (1) didn't understand the importance of nutrition during my training and races and (2) scarfed up just about every gel they offered on the route with no prior experience. Lesson learned. I now use the Mocha flavor exclusively during any run over 12, or when I need an extra punch of energy before a speed workout. I take it about 15 min before hand and about every 50-55 min thereafter. I've never experienced stomach upset when taking this on an empty or semi-empty stomach. They are easy to carry in a waist pack or tucked away in gloves when it's cold. One lesson learned for cold weather is to put the gel somewhere warm about 10 minutes before I need it so it comes out of the package and goes down easier. Good flavor, a little bit chocolatey and coffee-like and the caffeine is just enough to perk me up and keep me going without giving me a "high". I just tuck the wrapper away until I reach the next garbage can or home. Highly recommend for endurance athletes.

I do 2-3 long runs every week, anywhere from 13 to 26 miles per run and will take this after 8 miles (and then another at 16 miles). Cliff Shot seems to give me the extra push to finish up without feeling extremely fatigued. On the days I haven’t carried a packet, I’ve found my last few miles off by almost a minute.... Wether or not it’s just a mental thing, if it helps me finish strong, then it’s working. This particular flavor is great and the consistency is soft and smooth enough that I don’t choke on it. The cut on the side allows for easy tearing to open, even if your wearing gloves or hand are slippery from rain or sweat. Overall, it’s a great product at a good price here on Amazon (compared to local stores).

They work great. I used them for an olympic distance triathlon and had no adverse stomach issues. The bit of caffeine helped a lot while biking. I mixed one in my 16 ounce water bottle for training rides, but I do not advise mixing two in a 16 ounce bottle -- not enough dilution. I may try a different flavor just to see what the other options taste like, but it may take a few weeks to burn through this box. 5/5 stars.
