I decided to start using bar mops instead of rolls and rolls of paper towels after reading advice from The Every Day Cheapskate. She pointed out that even when you buy in bulk, paper towels become expensive. The bar mops absorb more than paper towels, you wash them and re-use them. These work really well, much better than paper. I ordered 2 packages, so I have plenty between washes. I do put some bleach or Oxyclean in the wash, because that keeps them sparkling white. (One objection that I had had to using cloth wipes was that the ones that were colored or printed start looking dingy and yucky after a while.) Be aware that when you first open the package, you may think the towels are thin and kind of flimsy. That is because they are packed very tightly. Once you wash them and put them through the dryer, they fluff up and are very absorbent. The texture also works well when wiping counters, etc. I keep them folded in a straw basket on my counter, ready to use and it looks nice. I also have a nice, smallish rattan waste basket that I keep in the kitchen and I just throw the towels in there as they become dirty. When it's full, into the wash they go.

About 20 years ago I bought my first set of "cooking towels". They've held up really very well - through lots of hot water, bleach, cooking and love. A couple of months ago I decided it was time to freshen things up and get some new cooking towels and went on the hunt and discovered "bar mops". Perfect. However, replacing the old ones would not be an easy find - after literally months of Amazoning , Utopia "Kitchen Bar Mop Towels" finally says, "here I am". Everything's perfect - the only thing that's missing is a blue strip. That's okay, I can live without that. I am one happy camper. These towels are just perfect. Handy size, super absorbent, and they are so soft and fluffy. I washed them in the hottest water I could with good old Tide powder [no softener] and chlorine bleach, tumbled dry on normal - there was very minimal, if no shrinkage (hooray!). They came out of the dryer so fluffy and soft - and remember, I said no fabric softener and I used plain old Tide powder, no fancy-dancy this or that with perfumes and poofy poopola that they add to so many laundry soap these days. [Can you tell I'm thrilled here?] I have purchased quite few other Utopia products on Amazon (sheets, pillow, pillow cases and such,) so I really shouldn't be surprised] I just wish I had thought to go to them first!!! When the towels first arrive don't be fooled, they appear a bit flat - don't worry, they'll fluff up fine if you follow the directions, no fabric softener. There was no offensive odor and I have an extremely keen sense of smell. There are quite a few dangling threads, these are ends from the sewing process and an occasional pulled thread, I suggest you go through and clip them all off before you launder the towels. All-in-all, these are a bit more expensive than some of the bar mop towels out there but if you want fluffy, soft, absorbent terry cloth these are your bet. I have purchased several different bar mop towels that were less expensive, but returned them because they just didn't fit the bill. These towels did, I'll be keeping these and possibly buying a 2nd set. Thanks Utopia.

although, oddly, that's pretty much how mine are used. I wash my hands frequently at the kitchen sink and these 100% cotton towels are great for hand-drying. They're large enough to make it a couple of days before being tossed into the dirty whites hamper and their lightness insures they'll dry quickly before hamper-tossing -- two are usually used together so the dirtier one dries quickly before replacement (& see parenthetical babble below). I'll definitely buy more. They came within a few days of order and after pre-use washing the long side of one was unraveled but it just gains quicker eventual entry to the "rag" rag bin. I didn't count but am certain there are at least 24. For under $1 a piece they'll save a lot of paper towels. In a house with several dogs and cats of various sizes, ages, lengths-of-stay (fosters -- anyone want an un-house-trained 7 - 8 year old female pitt mix?), and, um... inclinations, cleaning up some "accidents" is best done with paper towels or other disposable rags. The amount of water, hot or cold, needed to rinse/wash rags used to clean puke, pee, feces, etc., often of varying gross consistencies, makes paper towels essential. (Parenthetically, living in the semi-tropical clime of my hero and role model Ignatius J. Reilly, I'm compelled to point out even a small numder of soiled items can't be left in anything smaller than a 100 gallon barrel if they're not cleaned immediately after use. New Orleans is infamous for its benign and sometimes toxic molds, mildews, and plain disgusting standing water after less than 24 hours of hot weather [any period from Jan. - Dec.]. Wet bath towels, wash cloths, and other thicker materials must be carefully hung like pennants for 8 to 12 or more hours to dry or risk sprouting fungi or worse... but I digress.)

I bought these based off a recommendation from Mary Hunt ("Everyday Cheapskate") who said she has a big stack of these that she uses instead of paper towels. I hate how many paper towels I tend to go through, so I thought I'd give these a try. Now I'll be getting more! I was always a bit hesitant to use my limited dish towels to mop up spills, especially if there was a chance the spill would cause discoloration. I don't worry about that with these, since I use them the same way I did paper towels, but then I can wash and reuse. Big fan.

Give your kids one of these pure white towels to dry their hands on and they (and you) will see how well they washed their hands, they are perfect for cleaning little faces (and so softer than a paper towel). They're bigger than a washcloth and get a lot softer after the first wash. Little oops are easy to clean up, a quick rinse and then throw them in the hot wash. Here at the farm, 3 or 4 of these little towels will wipe off and then dry off a newborn lamb. I originally ordered 2 bags, used them, washed them, used them again, and then ordered 3 more sets. Really great product! JimatHoneybellFarms.

I bought these to replace wasteful paper towels for cleaning my kitchen. I am very, very pleased with this purchase and have already recommended them to a friend. They are very stiff and compact upon first inspection but they fluff up AMAZINGLY after washing. They bleach and wash up fantastic every time! Per Clean Mama's suggestion I keep several rolled up in a cute glass lidded jar on my counter and I use them for my counters and anything else I would have been using paper towels for. I thought it would be a hard adjustment switching to these, but they work SOOO much better than paper towels that I would NEVER go back, even if it wasn't an environmental benefit. Do recommend, will purchase again.

I've had my set for over 3 years now. I LOVE these towels. I bake for a living and these towels go through a lot of wear and tear, including food coloring spills and some nasty clean up jobs after I've done a large order. I use them like crazy. I throw them in the washer with a little bleach and they STILL smell fresh and clean and are still very white! About to purchase more as I made the mistake of washing a few with some jeans and other clothes and they came out of the dryer shredded. So just FYI, only wash them with other towels and they will last for years. I've got everyone else hooked on them too!

Looking for inexpensive towels that clean up a mess? That you don't care about getting the towel dirty and can throw in the wash? Here you go! I bought them for my classroom before a class party (every teacher's nightmare--what was I thinking), and it's like they kids spilled a bottle of soda just so I could use my new towels! They (the towels, not my students who neglected to tell me if the spill I discovered much later) cleaned up the mess just perfectly! And I brought them home and threw them in the wash, done and done. I now suspect I'll be searching for ant killer in a week or two...

Absolutely love these towels. They are super soft and absorbent. After the second washing they are pretty much lint-free. I keep them in a drawer next to my kitchen sink and whenever I am cooking I pull one out and set it next to the sink. I wash my hands frequently when I'm cooking and this is so handy to have next to the sink. They aren't as large as regular hand towels, more economical and absorbent than paper towels. When a meal is complete, I just toss it in the laundry and grab another one when I start cooking again. At this point I wouldn't want to be without them. As other reviewers have noted, it is definitely recommended to wash and dry them at least once before using.

These are the BEST cleaning towels I have ever used. When you first get them, they will feel rather rough and thin. You should wash them prior to using and I recommend that you run through the washer and dryer without any other clothing items for the first time because there will be quite a bit of lint in your lint filter. Don't use a dryer sheet or fabric softener because it will put a film on them. When you pull them out of the dryer, they will be fluffy, soft, and SUPER ABSORBENT. I purchased 2 packs and I'm glad I did. These will be my go-to cleaning towels from now on.
